John, you're correct... it ain't broke.. but, Greg was wanting ideas. He asked me to pose the question.

You reply is exactly what is needed. No Change is a good thing when all is working well.

What more could the pool player/fans want? well this is the time to voice your opinions and needs.

I also believe doing away with the banks event would be foolish. There is usually an overlap between great bankers and great one pocket players (Glen Rogers, Jason Miller, Varner, Scott Frost, David Matlock, and the list goes on), and the interest is obviously there.

For those that say banks is played 'only' in the southern U.S. (there is Chicago, but anyways), I'd say that the southern and midwestern U.S. may have the most vigorous and authentic pool culture in the country today. If anything, the south should have priority since the DCC is fortunately held in Kentucky.

That being said, I like the idea of a straight pool high run competition.

HERE IS WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING -
We get 4 players of relatively close skills to draw pills for order. The lowest breaks and plays the next highest pill. Winner stays & the looser gets back in order to play again.

Every time a player comes up to bat, he puts in $5 in the pot (on the first time). ON the second time he/she comes up to play, they must put in $10. Third time, $15. And the forth time, $20. Every time they come up to play after that, it just stays at $20.
ONCE A PLAYER WINS 3 GAMES IN A ROW, (Therefore beating all the other players in secession) - HE/SHE WINS "THE POT"!

I have also proposed that in addition to the SKIN POTS - We all start by putting up $200 into a Master Pot. This would only be won by the first player to win 3 Skins Pots.

This all seems pretty complicated when I type it out but believe me - It Isn't, once it is played.

I can just imagine this being played on one of the lounge tables at the DCC. With all the "Gunfighters" that attend, they would all want to get in to see if they could - "WIN SOME SKIN'S"!

Sounds like fun.
In college we played alot of "king of the Hill". Similiar but different. There was always alot of woofing and talk going on hoping one player would be another that had been at the table or needed another loss.
We usually played cheap for $5 a player and drew for order. Each match was
1 game of 9ball and the winner stayed and the loser got back in line. Each player got three losses and then was out. We did not place money in each game just at the start. Good cheap fun.

I like 3-ball because it evens the field somewhat and it cheap. Good players usually end up rooting for lower level players and vise-versa. Nothing
like 9 guys rooting for another one to tie someone.
 
This is the best idea so far. Although, I might like to see more tables or a bigger venue. I went three years ago and it was crowded then. I can't imagine what it is like now.

I think that a total offense variation would be good. Like the TOP events in ca where there were set runouts on tables and everybody went at them.
But it would probably be better to go 14.1 coz there would br need for fewer refs and might result in a massive run!

Would you please provide details of the 'TOP events' in CA?

I really think bowlliards would be really fun to watch. Have 4 or 5 guys/gals per table, one round [frame] at a time. You'd have to post the scores where people could see them though. This might actually be better for tv.

The Skin's Game I was suggesting was meant to be played in the Lounge. Maybe the table in the rear, on the left side. I agree that the scores and players should be posted for the sweaters.
I also agree to keep Banks. I don't play banks nor ever liked it as a game. I have always said it is A Shot, Not A Game but we all must remember where we are. Kentucky. Greg makes $ from the spectators and a lot of the spectators are from Kentucky.
I am also looking forward to the next DCC in January. I already have my Pool Side Reservations and can hardly wait.
I also agree that "If It's Not Broke, Don't Fix It" - But - I also think that one of the perks of running "The Best Pool Tournament In The World" should include positive input from the participants. Greg knows more than anyone about how to run a class act tourney, (but as I do in my biz, some of the best ideas on how to progress over the last 12 years, has come from my sales reps).

Great feedback.. I've not made my reservations... but I will be there in Jan of 2006. Going to see a lot of old friends, and meet some new ones.

Why not let anyone who wishes to pay a $50 entry fee for each attempt to "qualify a run" playing total offense straight pool. Allow qualifying for the first several days of the DCC event. A player wanting to take only one shot at qualifying can do so for $50. Any player wanting ten tries at "qualifying a run" will need to spend $500. Might be enough to dedicate three tables to qualifying. Then, at some designated point, take the four highest runs posted and have them play off in a four player, single elimination all-offense straight pool event, with nice prizes for 1st, 2nd and for the losing semifinalists. Make it a $25,000 added event. After throwing in all the $100 entry fees, the available prize fund should be considerable.

This approach would ensure that you'd get four real thoroughbreds in the last four, and even the qualifying could be breathtaking.

And, as Earl has noted, nobody would havew to worry about bad rolls. Run balls and shut up, as the saying goes.

SJM, I appreciate all suggestions, but you are getting close to what I'd like to try! At a straight pool event that Grady Mathews put on in Columbia SC there were at least 4 runs of over 100 on the pro spec Diamonds. I'm enterested in high runs. I like what I'm hearing from Earl and others on offensive straight pool. I'm so very slow typing and lazy I'd appreciate a call on my cell 812-989-6665 for futher discussions. You can do the typing and let anyone interested in what we come up with, look it over and make suggestions here on the net..........thanks Greg/Diamond
