Dechaine vs Hatch - Day 3

From the TAR podcast and how Dennis was talking during it I don't think Dennis really felt Dechaine had a realistic chance either. When he was asking about the "next" TAR match and if it was going to be between the winner of his match and the SVB/Archer match you could almost see that he meant "do I get to play the winner of the SVB/Archer match after this?".

I think Hatch sees himself as an equal to Archer and SVB and sees himself as a part of the "top" teir in the USA pool scheme while he sees Dechaine as part of a teir that is a step below. This weekend he got a shock on day 1 that woke him up to reality, and then he was in a dog fight to try and prove to himself his initial feelings about his place were still correct. He lost and now he might need to come to grips with the fact that he is simply not quite as good as he thought he was and that Dechaine is actually tough action for him, as would alot of other people a step below the top teir still be.

I think his match with Appleton gave him abit of false confidence, Appleton went into that match having no clue what he was in for in a race that long and figured out fast that such a grind was not for him. Dennis on the other hand simply thought he beat Appleton and was thus at least as good as him, and as Appleton is a world 10-ball champ, a 2 time US Open winner, Dennis felt he himself must be every bit as much world class.

The reality is Dennis has alot of natural talent and he is good, but he was never going to be a top player without putting himself out there and playing the international circuit and constantly playing world class fields. Torturing your local tour stops just does not cut it, it can make you feel invincible, but you are only invincible against shortstops, and Dechaine is not a shortstop, he tortures those local tours as well. While Hatch and Dechaine are playing in those things though, the true elite level players like Souquet, Wu, Appleton, SVB, Chang, Orcullo, and others are playing each other in 40k first place events. Hatch should NEVER expect to be their equal when he is not even playing on that actual circuit.

I think he got a reality check on where he truly stands in the whole pecking order and I am going to guess he does not like what he learned.

Excellent post Celtic, so true!

I was not there when they played, but a mutual friend of Darren and I, Geoff Gray, gave me a 'blow by blow' account.. Darren was frusrated right from the start, with Dennis' usual sharking tactics..The longer he kept it up, the hotter Darren got, 'til he became about as helpless as he can get..:frown:.. I totally agree with JohnnyT's, assessment of Hatch's 'modus operandi'. (and yours too, Celtic) I don't think his head is shaped right, to EVER be a really top echelon contender.

Darren is not used to that kind of [sic] "sportsmanship," and I think if he had NOT held it in, and gave Dennis some of his own medicine, (like Dechaine did)...it would have been a totally different outcome..At least he was man enough to shake Hatch's hand. (but only after Dennis stuck it out there)

If they ever play again, I will take Darren aside, and teach him how to deal with an "overbearing, distracting, sharking" opponent.

PS..50 years of playing Ronnie Allen, I would think should qualify me..:p

That is a post that is perfect in almost every way.

The only part I disagree with is the very last part. I do not believe Hatch has the honesty to analyse things that way. I think he will just make excuses rather than admissions.

Thanks/But NO Thanks

Allot of AZ threads turn into pissing matches, allot of challenge matches evolve into the same animal. Some pool players are appreciative about opportunities, others ''tantrum'' away and implode the moment and production. Why?

There is a lot of merit to what you write. I wish some of these pool players who do compete in tournaments and action matches would post on this forum and share their vantage point or view on some of these topics we discuss. It just might be illuminating. :p

Both Mike and Dennis post here. (Mike more frequently.)

Perhaps we'll see...

(Mike hasn't posted anything on his facebook page as of yet, either.)
