DEFLECTION

How many years did you play pool before you learned about deflection?
2 yrs…..I was 16 1/2 yrs old……I played pool starting at 14 but couldn’t go to a pool hall unescorted
by a parent, guardian or another adult back in the 60’s in NYC. Once I turned 16 and started going to
different pool halls, and there was a lot of pool halls back in the 60’s, I learned about what was called
“squirt” back then which is a different term than swerve. My step dad started teaching me and before
he left for WWII, he hustled a lot on the Bowery growing up a young kid during tough times. 25 cents a
game was a lot for a young boy in the early 30’s. By the time he was in his late teens a $5 or $10 wager
became more common. He was the one that taught me cue elevation was the reason for swerve and it
also influences the amount of deflection along with stroke speed. He wanted me to keep the cue as flat
as possible is what he’d aways preach. Learn to master normal roll & delivering the cue ball straight before
you start dabbling with English. And remember that center ball and cue ball speed can win most matches.

I remember when Meucci's 'Crossing the Delaware catalog came out in '79. He talked about deflection and we were all like " WTF is he talking about?" He was aware of and trying to minimize it back then.
Is there a scan available online? Interested in reading this.

No clue. It was his first big color brochure. He talked about deflect. but didn't go into great detail. Basically what they did was lighten the front-end of the shaft by using really thin wall ferrules. It wasn't near the reduction that Predator got yrs later but Bob knew about it back then. https://www.discountpoolcues.com/meucci_originals.htm all i could find

this thread has pics of some of the early brochures. not sure exactly in which one he talked about defl.

Back before I ever heard of push shots, or maybe they weren’t allowed then, we used to call deflection “push”. They’d say if you use left english you’ll push CB to right
That was how I started.

Nmw what they say about Bob and his cues, he was a pioneer in this game.

as soon as i got good enough to use any english for position.. and i saw what happened and took some time to see what to do about it. its intuitive that the ball will squirt right away. just like using outside on cut shots that will throw. only took a few times to watch it happen to realize what is going on.
then i started using back hand english all or most of my longer english shots.
now i mostly if hitting very hard, just adjust my aim on the object ball.

Absolutely.

I listed him as one if the best cue makers and people laughed. His execution of his cues may have been bad in terms of quality.

He was a genius to address deflection and ushered the way for LD shafts.

The red dot and black dot shafts are legendary.

I thought his early cues were good cues. Very solid hit, the ones I tried after the mid 80s all seemed to have a fit problem in the joint.
Gimme an original Meucci Original, lol, and they play lights out.

I played in a pool hall in town when i was 15-16 years old. The guys and players were not good at that place i mostly just pocketed balls. Years later after that pool hall closed about when i was 21. A new pool hall opened up and this place was ran by real players. Maybe after i became serious about 3-4 months later i bought my first predator shaft. A few decades later I waiting for the new pool hall to open up by me and i have several revo shafts
