So, the thread about poolplayer's excuses for losing reminded me of "delusional poolplayers". http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=221534

What I'm talking about is the guy/girl that strongly believes that they play better than they do, to the point of it being a bit ridiculous. You know who I'm talking about; every pool room has one. They are the people that don't play that well but have that once-in-a-great-while day where they are playing a couple of balls over their heads and always refer to those days as "playing their game" or "being in stroke". Of course, the other 363 days a year, they don't play anywhere near that speed. Oh, the best part is when they lose to a better player, and write the loss off with ridiculous excuses like "well, they got all the rolls" or "If I played more, then my real game would come out".

So, what is your favorite way to deal with this? (see the poll)

If kick them in da' taint means take every last dime out of their delusional pockets. That's how I would deal with them. I LIVE for players who think they are better than they are.

You whip out your wallet and hope like hell they don't have one of those "good" days.

Delusional players

I usually just ignore them.Last wk this jackass told me that I shouldnt play nine-ball with him because he will make me want to quit pool.I laughed for five minutes straight. Then asked him if he wanted to quit after every win.I wanted to kick him straight in the taints.Talk about being f*cking delusional.

If I think there is any hope for them I'll suggest they do drills / games that can be measured ... like Internet Equal Offense or 20 spot shots. Nothing like unbiased measurement to wipe out delusions.

If I think they are beyond hope (the vast majority imo) I just let them be and ignore all foolish comments (like "I had an off night ... I'll get you next time").

I suggest they go out and buy the most expensive and well-known cue they can afford; and then go on internet pool forums and criticize better players who play with less expensive cues.

:D

How about the opposite? People think I play better than I do.

Let them think that - it's worth a couple of games in a short race. I played this kid in a tournament recently. He had a pefect stroke, poise, stance. He made very few mistakes. I really thought he was a pro, a road player or something, and he played great and ended up beating me. I felt a little pressure and dogged a couple of shots.

I told my friend about him and he says "oh, I know that guy. You can give him the 8 and rob him."

It didn't make me feel better!

I don't see it that much anymore. But I did get a good one this week. Guy says he has a lower end Balabushka worth about 10k. Now I'm thinking he's serious, so we get to talking, and he was given it as a replacement for his Helmstetter that was broken during refinishing. And yes, the fore-arm is signed too. I just humored him, figured he wouldn't believe me if I told him the truth anyway.

You should have put an entry in for "Make fun of them"

At least this way you stand to make some money or at least get a really good laugh out of it.

I can't begin to count how many times, guys who have this whole pipe dream up in their head, have gone broke as a result of it when you really get them pissed off by making fun of them and questioning their ability.
Get them bent, and all the prop bets start coming out, or the instant challenge matches.
They will "Win a weekly scratch tourney" within X amount of time.
They will "Win a regional weekend event" within X amount of time.
Heck, i think there might be a "Gonna win the U.S. Open within a year" bet that still has to be paid off, in the local pool room by one of these guys.

But i wouldn't want these guys to disappear.
Not at all.
Busting these guys stones, is one of the best pool room leisure activities that has provided some of the fondest memories I've had in pool.

There's nothing wrong with a little pool hazing to help straighten these guys out.

It wouldn't be delusional if i didn't mention MARTY!

Perfect example of this phenomena is MARTY HERMAN on any chat in USTREAM or in real life for that matter.

Every pro player is his best-est friend forever.
He taught every pro pool player in existence how to play.
He can beat every person in chat at both 3 cushion and pool, and i quote,"Is there anyone in here stupid enough to gamble with me?" Which he will eventually ask if you let him go off and pump himself up to that level without cutting him down a few times before hand.
Anyone who doubts him or questions him is "SCUM, or CANCER"

And this is just an aside, He sold a southwest to every pool player that has ever owned one.

PERFECT EXAMPLE of a DELUSIONAL POOL PLAYER!

I know a delusional pool player when i see one!!!

'Delusional Poolplayers'
Aren't we all just a touch bit 'delusional' when it comes to our perception of how well we play?

I hear them (the really bad 'delusional' players) from across the room, spouting how much money they won on the game they supposedily played last week. :o

They have to be great players, because they gamble all the time. "Gambling makes you play better or be a better player"

Then they dissapear for a few weeks and you find you that they let their mouth overload their wallet and lost a paycheck. When they do come back, the reason they've been gone is that they were 'on the road'.. winning tons of $$$$.. then they ask to borrow a ten spot.
