Dennis Hatch needs a stake horse!

Dennis had a falling out with his stake horse and needs a backer!

His backer is upset that Dennis has been staking himself at tournaments lately and won't back him against Darren unless he (the stake horse) can put him in the Predator 10-Ball Championship in May!

Dennis is playing as great as always, and can afford to stake himself in tournaments now based on how many he keeps winning!!!

Contact me here or e-mail Dennis at Hatchetman71 at hotmail.com if interested.

He is looking for a stake against Darren or against any player, not a backer for tournaments!

I hear that the AZ Billiards Forum is going to be renamed Backers R Us. Does this really work? Asking on the forums for backing in heads up money matches?

I am guessing that if Dennis' (probably former now) backer was upset about the arrangements between them then he/she is probably really hot now that the business is put on the street.

Kinda makes me leery of becoming a backer to someone when I feel that our dealings can be made public knowledge.

I wonder if Dennis' backer would be willing to sign a contract backing Dennis in all tournaments he chose to play in for the next two years, including all expenses? If so I'd jump on that in a heartbeat. No matter how good Dennis is playing he isn't going to win all the tournaments he enters so it will balance out.

Anyway, good luck with the search on AZ for someone to back Dennis against the reigning World Ten Ball Champion. Most people seem to think that Dennis is the favorite so perhaps it will be quite easy to find a backer.

call me crazy, but if i had someone willing to back me for 20k-30k and staked me regularly...i would try not to pull any shenanigans and lose them......

But this guy wanted (half?) of all his winnings from Joss tourneys and other regional events, where he could easily pay his way? Maybe not before, but now that he's going well? So the guy owns him forever? That's not right ... one of the perhaps best 20 players in the world shouldn't have to be anybody's serf.

I dunno, maybe I'm crazy for looking at it this way, but the backer doesn't own or control the player.

Instead the backer is merely another gambler. He is willing to risk 10,000 to win 7,000 (or whatever) because he thinks he has an edge on this particular gamble, the same way the guy at the blackjack table or the guy at the racetrack thinks he has an edge. The fact that the player keeps the other 3K of winnings almost doesn't matter. The horse merely provides him some entertaining action to sweat and draws in suckers who will take this 2-1 proposition that the backer thinks he's running.

The player is doing the backer a favor and making him money. The player has the talent and draws the action and sweats blood to win that money. If their relationship has to have a "boss" then the player should be it. If that player is good enough and rich enough to stake himself and win, then he is throwing the backer a bone by letting him buy a piece of anything he does.

If the backer doesn't like that and wants more, he'll have to learn to play like dennis or find another horse who has as much talent/heart but not as much funding (good luck with either of those).

Really, if the backer has been making money, he's shooting himself in the foot here. Sounds like he got greedy and wanted everything, and now he gets nothing. If someone is leery of backing Dennis and then getting their dirty laundry aired, all they have to do is keep things clean...

Player/backer relashonships are similiar to marriage, you accept the good with the bad and remain receptive to compromise.

lol, i'm hearing what JAY is typing...:)

I agree that the backer doesn't own the player, contrary to what some backers think. I just think however that it sounds desperate to put your "business" in this case on the street.

I don't see why a player can't come here and ask for sponsors? It has worked for many players. Witness John Schmidt's US Open win as an example.

If I player needs backing for a money match then I could see a corporation forming to invest in that.

I just still think that it's a bit of a stretch to say that you are looking for a backer to back you against anyone in the world. So am I.

In fact I would like a backer to back me against the biggest (not the best) case maker in the world, potential win is in the millions, the game will take about two years to complete and at the end of it I (and my investors) will be the biggest and the best case maker in the world. All you need to invest is one million dollars. Any takers?

Well I thought I'd try anyway.

Good luck Dennis. I hope you find the stake because I'd like to sweat the match. I personally find it ludicrous that you have a cheeky Brit trotting around the USA and no one will step up to play him. Does only Jeannete Lee have any gamble anymore????

Back to the age old argument. Why effectively give up odds by staking a player when you can get 1/1 odds or better by making a side wager with supporters of the other guy?

Mike (Jock McScrooge to you mister)

Sounds to me like Dennis' "backer" thought he was, in fact, Dennis' "sponsor."

Big difference.

No, I am sure that the backer knew that he wasn't sponsoring Dennis. That would be money spent with an uncertain return.

It all depends on the agreement between Dennis and his backer prior to all of this happening. If they had no set agreement concerning tourneys then the backer is in the wrong. If they had an agreement that the backer would pay for ALL tourneys and gambling matches then Dennis is in the wrong.

The truth is that we'll never know the whole truth but I would think that Dennis would be willing to allow the backer to pay for the Predator 10-ball in return for staking the match against Darren. Besides having a chance to pocket at least 5 g's he is also risking nothing in a big tourney with a stacked field that he has no guarantee of cashing.

So now what is the line on whether they play by the end of May or not? Somebody throw one out there and we can bet on it. It seems we make more wagers online than anyone actually makes at the venues nowadays.

Amazing how the majority of top players never have their own money. Amazed how many strong players have had to get entry fees paid for in < $50.00 tourneys where they are favorites over the field. A few classes in money management is needed. And simply stating that the costs of playing pool are too high is no excuse. There are way more amateurs that support this game and travel long distances to play in tourneys yearly (i.e. vegas, VF, DCC) etc that have zero shot of making money for their weekend.

I have not spoken to Dennis in a long time. He used to have a very supportive backer in his area, as well as another well-known stakehorse from Albany.

That said, there is probably a whole lot more to this than many of us on this forum know. ;)

For example, it would be interesting to know the identity of the OP of this thread. His handle on another post is "Scotty Boy."
