Dennis Ocollo in action

Do you expect me to post?

Every once in awhile, late at night when most people are asleep, there are action matches taken place.
If you happen to be there you can witness some of the best pool ever played.
Usually it's for more money than players win or lose in a tournament....
This is why I prefer watching action over tournament.

This was the case in Louisiana this week.
Scotty Townsend Memorial, late night action.

**I know these guys and won't post the amounts or names of some of the players in this story....but, I think you will still enjoy the read.**

So, you have Lil John Macias who had just played and won a set for $5k.
This was 9 ball played on a bar box against another great American player.
Then, on a 9 footer, he played and won a few games of 1hole for $700 per game with the same player.

After those matches, Dennis Orcollo offered Lil John a game.
Dennis offered a race to 9 playing 10 ball on the 9 footer.
Dennis was to give John 5 games on the wire and Dennis wanted the first break.
As the money was been posted, several rail birds wanted some of the action and both players covered all bets.

Dennis then broke the balls and began running rack after rack.
The first 3 games he had good looks at the 1 ball to start his run.
In the 4th rack he could see the 1 ball but had to bank it or play off the ball to get safe.
He banks it and continues running balls and racks.
Dennis runs a 6 pack.

In rack 7 he runs all the way to the 10 ball and it hangs up in a pocket.
Dennis gets a round of applause for the great pool that he's just played.
John gets that game and the score is 6-6.

John then breaks and runs a rack to get to 7-6.
They go back and forth before John gets to the hill first.
He breaks and runs down to the 9 ball and hangs it.
Dennis jumps up out of his chair yelling...."Free Money, Free Money"...
He makes the 9 ball but doesn't get very good shape on the 10 ball.
It appears to be a spot to spot shot, meaning the 10 ball was close to being on the spot
and the cue ball was in a similar position at the other end of the table.
Dennis drills this shot to reach double hill.

At this point a couple money offers were made by John and declined by Dennis.
It wasn't to quit...I believe John wanted to play this last game for an additional amount.
(Not your normal-back it and jack it offer) Dennis said let's just finish it out as is.

This is when I started recording this short video of the last rack in this hill-hill match.
At this point, not much music had been playing on the juke box.
But, right when Dennis is about to break "Eye of the Tiger" begins playing.
To me this is funny because Dennis is sponsored by Tiger and is wearing a polo shirt with a Tiger patch on the front.

If you want to see Dennis running out and dancing, click on the video here.

I was sitting right behind Lil John and trying to be respectful,
so the video isn't the best quality but at least you will see a little piece of this great match.

After this set, Lil John quickly tells Dennis that he wants to do it again for more money.... and you hear Dennis saying "don't I get a break first". lol

In short, Dennis did the same thing in the second set.
Played great, ran a bunch of racks and won.
A couple people I know started recording the second set.
If they read this they might post their video somewhere.

For those that haven't heard of Lil John here is a good article.

Also, I got to know a couple other Filipino players.
Jeffrey De Luna and Johann Chua.
I knew of these guys but, this was my first time hitting balls with them and talking pool strategy.
Jeffrey has the mind of a 100 year old pool player.
Very smart and just a cool guy.
These two young guys were giving the 5 out wild to seasoned money players and getting the cheese.
Playing 9 ball on the bar box.
They remind me of the next Efren and Francisco.
Keep an eye on them.....
Extremely High Level pool by team Philippines....surprising right? lol

Hope you liked this little action report

That's great stuff DO has been in action in my area for a couple months saw him live a couple times ,, he does have a sense of humor ' he's not Robo cop all the time he mingles eats pizza while playing mingles with guys on the rail sometimes he's actualy pretty personable , not what I expected for what I've read infact exactly the opposite
That's what social media does , his limp hand shake went viral it makes people form a opinion that might not be true all us pool shooters have that moment less than stellar but we don't have cameras on us every move we make ,, that was a bad look
But from what I have seen that's not who he is
He's more like you and me than most people will ever know

Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the read and the video. Dennis is seriously in action 24/7 wherever he goes.

That's quite the spot against another road player. Dennis has to run a big package to have a chance, and it sounded like he did it twice.

good write-up and great video. I couldn't believe the end lol...he's got some personality :p

Thank you! Nice write up and loved the video, never saw that side of DO before (making 4 balls on the break for the cash will do that for you). Although he had an open look at the 1 ball, he made a real tough long shot and hit it perfectly after that it was set up nicely. DO has a lot of heart and plays so great.

Thanks again,
Dave

Good to hear J. Chua got some actions, lol poor guy shouldn't beat Shane for the title in All Japan and now nobody wanna play him.

Yeah, that was not an easy shot on the 1 ball, and he nailed it. Those long straight in shots are not easy. He is such an amazing player. I really want to see him play Alex in a long 1 pocket session. That would be a great match I think.

Thanks to the OP for the very interesting story.

Dennis and Alex playing will be a long match, guaranteed.

It was a hanger.

For him.

Ya know, having watched him drain those and far tougher, over and over again...I now know why helfert has been singing about the dude for years.

Best pool read on this forum in a long while! Thanks for the color, the video, and sharing.

John Barton on Facebook live said that the TDs were going to make an award similar to the Louie Roberts award in the name of Scotty Townsend for the guy who's in the most action.

Also heard on someone else's live that Lil John was gonna re-up and wanted to play DO for $30k.

I'm sure Dennis will be one of the guys up for it because he's in constant action.

Sure as hell looks fun in Louisiana.

That's the real Dennis that I know, a killer on the table and a lot of fun off of it. He's worn a path around my table dancing after every bank shot he makes on me. He runs threes and fours like nothing on a triple tough Diamond. Still the best I've seen under pressure this side of Shane, and it's close between those two. They have a grudging respect for each other, veiled by outward animosity.

Both these guys delight at beating each other! When Shane beats Dennis he laughs about it and when Dennis beats Shane he is very proud. They played two of the best U.S. Open finals ever in 2013 and 2014. Shane won both, but they played two epic matches with many great shots and very few errors (solid .900's in both). Fortunately they are available from Accu-Stats.

Thanks for sharing this, great post!

I found it interesting the amount of time Dennis took on the break, with the exception of the one, the longest shot of the game.

Is the break the most important, yet least practiced, shot of the game? Even us mere mortals can run more tables with a good break.

Maxx, for top players they may practice the break shot more than any other shot. It is without doubt the most important shot there is in rotation pool games.

Last year, with the exception of the Hard Times 10-Ball, Dennis swept the 2016 West Coast Swing events...He couldn't win the Hard Times 10 Ball is because he couldn't go... he had to catch a plane to the Philippines.

Dennis on the West Coast last year:
2016 - Cole Dickson / 1st Place
2016 - West Coast Challenge One Pocket / 1st Place
2016 - West Coast Challenge 10 Ball / 1st Place
2016 - Hard Times 10 Ball / No Show

With the 2017 West Coast Swing looming, one can only guess how things will end up. Dennis will also play Chohan in the middle of all of these events.

2017 West Coast Swing schedule so far:

July 1st/2nd - Cole Dickson 9 Ball / $2,500 Added Guaranteed / San Francisco, CA
July 5th-7th - West Coast Challenge1-Pocket / $5k Added Guaranteed / Fremont, CA
July 7th-9th - West Coast Challenge 9-Ball / $10k Added Guaranteed / Fremont, CA
July 11th-14th - Dennis Orcollo vs Tony Chohan / Race to 40 for $100k / Fremont, CA
July 15th-16th - Hard Times 9-Ball / $4k Added / Bellflower, CA
