Each match is set up as "He has to reach 100 points before you reach 35." Any national-class player will try that for a few matches.

Mmmm…dunno. Might just come down to who wins the lag/doesn’t break safe. Most ‘national-class‘ players could likely run a hundred on-demand, and I could run 35 any day. I like 150/50 better. I could run 50 on a Diamond (but not every day), and watching my opponent run 150 & out would be worth the stake just to watch!
Geez, TinMan, I just noticed where you are. It’s a slog for me to drive to Red Shoes, but I can’t imagine playing a long session after the trip from MN. But, whatever. I’ve been up early all this week (rare), but in future will need some advance notice to arrive there still leaving enough time (I don’t think John would keep the place open all night (like Ames) just for us

Hahaha. Yeah, it makes no sense to come to play a few games of straight pool...except that jumping in the car and listening to a good podcast and meeting a cool guy and playing a fun session sounds like a fun time. And I have some buddies down there so if I could meet up with them for dinner and crash at their place for the night it's not that unreasonable. George Fels gave me an invite to come play him some straight pool once. I learned the game from his book and read his articles in Billiards Digest for years growing up. I regret not taking that trip. These days I try to make it happen because we only go around this rock once.
