Hanks poolroom (38th and Sheridan) has recovered all the 9 foot tables and even set up an 8th 9 footer. He has upgraded the mens room and yesterday had paper towels and soap in there at the same time.
So now we have 8 newly recovered 9 foot GCs - 1 billiards table-2 snooker tables for golf-and some bar tables(never counted them but I think 8 or so).
For those of you that know Hanks this is a major upgrade. One regular said "We are witnessing history"

I travel to Denver almost every week and haven't found anywhere to play, so this is good news. I've been going to that place at Belleview and Federal - about 15-20 bar boxes - problem is I don't really like playing on bar boxes.

When I walk in I hear this sucking sound - the holes are so big that they create a vacuum - just get a ball near it and it will be sucked in.

It's fun for a while, but as a bar not a pool hall.

Is Hanks safe?? It's got a weird vibe. Stopped by once a couple weeks ago, looked around and left.

Anywhere else in the area? I usually stay at DTC.

As far as the regulars go its safe during the day. I don't know about the night crowd. Its in a bit of a rough area and I would be careful at night.
Maybe someone who gos at night can comment.

I was a bit afraid the first time I went to Hanks, but after going regularly, I feel pretty comfortable. I go usually at night, and although you see lot's of kids that look a little on the rough side, but they're primarily on the bar boxes. The big tables area seems to be populated primarily with guys that are there to play pool.
I would have to say that the place appears to be in a rougher part of town, so all the common sense rules come in to play here. Lock your car doors, don't leave valuables in the car, never let your cue out of your sight.
Other than the parking, I'm pretty happy with the place, and the tables all play pretty good now.

I've heard that Table Steaks is within weeks of being open, and I hear that they can't find anybody foolish enough to pay 8K a month in rent to try to make a run at Charlies.

Does anyone have an update on the other pool halls like Charlie's up north and Billiards Ink (Table Steaks) in Englewood? Did Billiards Ink get their liquour license this month?

Talked with Bobby Browns (X) yesterday (she's going to be the next owner), should be in May sometime before they reopen.

Hey Bruce

Just sending a "vague" message from Ted & Doug

Safety

As a Hank's veteran since I was in high-school in the '60s, I can attest that I've been in an out alone at all hours of the day. The only thing "unsafe" about Hank's is playing a safety against some of the 9-ball purists who believe a real 9-baller goes for the hit.

Great to hear that they're upgrading equipment. It has slipped badly in recent years. Last time I was there, seems I remember a billiards table had reappeared? Was that a dream? I remember seeing Eddie Taylor shooting 3-cushion in that room a half-century ago.

I'm almost exclusively a basement player now, though I enjoy stopping at Hank's just for a burger, beer and watching the old timers playing golf in the corner.

And I miss the days of Andy Hudson, Tony "Cheese" Ricotta (slowest player in history), Freddie the Jap, Bill Barnes,
Tim Cole, Bill Stroud and many, many others. Oh, let us not forget Fat Marty, R.I.P.

Ricotta...........how much slower than H. Granis?

Hanks is fine at night and located near a busy intersection. As mentioned, lock your car and hide your valuables, common sense stuff in just about any part of the town.

Given that Hank's is in a rougher part of town, have there been incidents of automobile vandalism or other crimes in this neighborhood?

I have never had a problem at Hanks, their parking lot is kind of funky and I think it looks dark and back alleyish. I happen to be in town for a couple of days on business and might stop in there and check out the new cloth.

"Soap and paper towels"..... This alone is worth braving a funky parking lot to see.

I haven't had any problems at Hanks or in the parking lot and I used to go there in the 60's when it was called the Family Fun Center.

I played there for about 5 hours today and the tables are really fast and fun to play on.
What an improvement

Let me know if you plan on going to Hanks. I'd be glad to meet you there in the eve.
