First time I have been to the derby since it has moved. Watched a lot of my personal heroes Efern, Earl an Shane. After a time my stomach began to growl. Off I go an come apron barbecue I am a happy man. Sitting at my table I spot Jay Helfert talking to some gentlemen. He happen to look over an I put my hand up like a school boy to get his recognition. I gobbled my sandwich down an was trying to figure out how to approach a man who I knew through his books an reputation. I was so afraid that I would make a fool out of myself. To my surprise he walked over an started talking an treating me like an old friend. I told him that as a member of AZB. that I pm. him about giving his book to my 23 year old grandson and the book really inspired him. Will the man sure put me at ease an could not have been more pleasant. An if you read this Jay thanks for taking time for a true fan and making my derby something special to me. Skip

If you really wanted to make a friend, you should have found a cloth napkin and buffed his bald pate.

Actually, Jay is a very friendly and approachable person, just keep a firm grip on your stack when you're around him. :)

He not only wanted your sandwich, but wanted to find out if you were good action and how deep your pockets were.

;)

Man, there are some great posts in this thread

Or a free bankin dvd.haha.John B.

We all know he was workin some kind of an angle. He don't do anything without a bigger picture in play.

Just so you all know, Jay does have a little bit of a sense of humor.

Hey Skip, I'm still just a pool fan like you. I love meeting other people who appreciate the game as much as I do. I'm glad your grandson enjoyed my book. That was the whole idea behind my writing it, to entertain people with some stories about a few memorable players I knew. My own grandson will turn 11 this month. He wants to read my book too, but I'm not sure I'm ready to share it with him. He still thinks I'm such a good guy and he might change his mind if he reads Pool Wars. He's never seen that side of me.

Interestin dilemma.

How do you convince a young'n that school is important when he can see is isn't, for everyone.

Some work for a living, some play...not that play can't be work;);)

How I met Jay.

I reached in my pocket for my wallet, and was shaking hands with Jay!

Not really. Jay is one of the good guys. Met him in the Army in '67. He turned me on to Johnston City back then and that got my nose open forever. Can't imagine pool without Jay being involved in one way or another.
