Destinkifying my gear?

What's the best way to safely remove smoke smell from my cues and the inside of my Instroke case? I worry about spraying Febreze because it may damage my cue, even if I let it dry.

Just think, your gear doesn't have a non stop air exchange system constantly sucking the smoke filled air into it and expelling it back out like a filter. Your lungs, on the other hand...

I don't go to places that have smoke. I feel it to obviously after.

That being said, isopropyl alcohol works pretty well for the cues. Make sure to get the 91% stuff. You can buy it at CVS for like a buck something. It is a good general purpose cue cleaner.

As for the case, not sure on that one. I personally wouldn't want to spray Fabreeze in there. It doesn't really eliminiate odor, just masks it. And like you say, who knows what it does to the cues. I am assuming the interior is not removable? Having had a pool case in many a disgusting smoke filled death chamber, I've honestly never really noticed a great deal of accumulation *inside* the case. More so the outside.

If you come up with a good solution please post it here. Hopefully I will never have to deal with this problem again!

Best of luck,

You might try zeolite crystals, which purportedly absorb odors like smoke. (I use them for other things, and it seems to reduce odors, though not eliminate them). They can be put in your case, and refreshed by leaving them in the sun.

Thank you kindly.

activated charcoal - probably not the best option

spray it with fabreeze - may not be ideal but easy to wipe off

rub it with a fabric softener sheet - maybe better solution

Leave it in a room with an ozone generator. least intrusive option for the gear but don't stay in the room (toxic for humans and animals)

I use these in all of my vehicles and cut one package up to make a smaller size that fits in the cue case. The rock has a fine powder at first, but after baking them a few times they will not drop any dust/resin.

Takes about a week to fully clean a scent, but all of my cars smell like...... Absolutely nothing. Which is kind of odd when you get in other peoples cars and notice that they have any scent at all.

I bought a Fellini case that was smoked up so bad I didn't want it in the house.

I put it outside every sunny day for a couple of weeks. It isn't too bad now but you can still smell it a little.

People may think I'm crazy, but now one of my questions about condition when buying an old case is, what's it smell like?

This brought up bad memories from before Ontario banned smoking in bars and pool halls. I distinctly remember the stench of stale smoke coming from my linen wrap (and transferring to my hand).

My recollection is that I used alcohol to clean the wrap (then wax paper to reseal) - see the current thread on cue cleaning that deals with wrap cleaning - although I have a vague recollection that I might have busted out the Febreze at some point.

So thankful for smoking bans so I don't have to deal with this! I love pool but I couldn't play if it meant going into a smoke filled bar every time.

I have the answer. This is what I use on anything that stinks. Go anywhere with hunting supplies. Grab some Scent Away - or any other scent killer that deer hunters use. It works great - and I don't believe it will hurt anything. Let it dry completely. I spray it in my kid's shoes. If it will kill that stench - it will kill anything! I have also used it on cue wraps. Didn't hurt anything.
