"Diamondizing" A Table Thread

What does "hit 3 three long rails" mean? Do you mean you hit the far end rail three times while shooting straight up and down the table. I think most people would say something like "I got five lengths."

That’s exactly what I meant. Maybe I didn’t word it correctly. I was trying to stay consistent with the term a previous poster used. But, the concept is the same.

I have a related question....

When the rails are already removed....How can I tell if my GC IV rails have already been calibrated/corrected?

I don’t want to waste money/time sending them in for work when they are already setup correctly.

I’m sure it would take an “in person” inspection to check but I thought I would ask any way.

Thanks

If they're still factory built, then no, they're not in spec, for one, the corner pockets don't have matching miter angles, and two, the side pockets are not centered in the middle of the casting.

For another data point, I just took a bevel gage to my GC4's corner pockets. Each measured almost exactly the same. Right about 142 degrees between the long nose of the cushion and the pocket facing. My pocket facings were not completely flat, but I suspect that is from years of the balls bouncing off of them, rather than a factory defect. I put the bevel gage blade on the back part of the pocket facing, where it is wood instead of the front part where it is rubber. I used a sliding bevel gage, so that the rubber basket of the pocket would not interfere with the measurement.

I also looked at my side pockets. They measured about 107 degrees. 3 of them were pretty close, the 4th was off by about 2 or 3 degrees.

The side pockets also looked well centered over the slate opening. Each point of the side pocket measured 2.75" offset from the center string on the cloth (I have my cloth marked on each diamond). That center string line was derived from the sights on the rails. The cutout in the slate also looks fairly well centered over this line.

My table is a GC4, private owner only, and on its 3rd or 4th recloth. I'd say its numbers are pretty good for a 20 some year old table.

What numbers do you see on new GC tables that you say are not correct from the factory?

So..... my question was......how do I “verify” that they have been worked on and corrected.

Thank you

Unless you know what you're looking for, how am I supposed to tell you, I'm not going to sit here and describe every Gold Crown ever built. If YOU look at a set of GC rails, can you tell if the cushions have been replaced?

For starters, have you ever seen the factory cushions mounted so high that most of the canvas control strip has been sanded off? You do realize that means the nose height is higher than its supposed to be right?

Did you take the side pocket castings off and measure how far out past the end of the rail the pocket ear extends under the pocket castings? If you did, you more than likely found out that the right side extends about 7/8" of an inch, while the left side extends out about 3/4". Did you check and see if the down angle in the pockets are all the same?

RKC.....is there anyone in So Cal that can work on the rails of a GCIV?
Are you willing to come to LA LA Land anytime soon?

Thanks

Steve Leistikow is the only person that comes to mind, but I don't know if he has the ability to calibrate the rails.

Ok, I've read about diamondizing a table in another thread to a small degree. But since i've already got one of the ultimate tables - that being a Gold Crown IV - it got me to thinking about some things. So, i thought i'd start a discussion of this topic. here goes......

1) Why would i want to change a Gold Crown when tons and tons of major championships were played on it for 30+ years and its still considered either the best or 2nd best table out there?

2) What would be done to a Gold Crown IV if it were diamondized?

3) What are the costs? how long does it take? can it be done at my home?

4) Does diamondizing a Gold Crown IV actually make it play better? or just play different?

Mike
Supposedly makes it tougher to play on ..Apparently everybody thinks The diamond tables are more challenging because of the cut of the pocket .I like my Gold crown IV just the way it is .The way it came from the factory .We have two pool halls here in Augusta Ga with a bunch of 7 ft diamonds and 9FT Gold crowns Aand they just recently Diamonized the Gold crowns ..They dont play that much different in my op[inion
