Did the cue market fall apart?

POOL CUE!!! I wanted Fizzy Bubblech...

Maybe pool players of all ages are just getting smarter. Due to technology in ALL sports, good gear is getting cheap, and cheap gear is getting good. Find a really good production cue company with great QC and what they make, even at the lower end, will be as good or better (at least to most people) as anything a custom cue maker can produce. I have a Keith Josey plain Jane I really like, but I also have a truly beautiful Pechauer with far more intricate inlays and points that plays just as well. I know several really high-skill players at my local pool hall who use the same Players and Lucasi cues they've had for years. Once you have a stick you like and play great with, why buy another? I used to buy and sell for fun, but just don't feel the need to buy another when I have a couple great sticks that are better than I am, which is true for almost anybody with a straight stick with a good tip. For people that want to spend thousands on a cue that's fine, but for the VAST majority, including skilled players, it really isn't necessary.

It seems that earlier in the year I had 0 problems selling cues, but now it seems like its pulling teeth to get any kind of deals done. I know something has changed due to me getting a cue back I sold earlier this year in less than a day and had 8 PMs and legit offers about it and now I posted it again and haven't even got a "hello how are ya" lol Are others having the same experience? I have several cues I posted across different platforms and I don't try to Highball with my prices and even at low prices things don't seem to be moving.

Thanks :)
cue selling is like that certain times of the year are extremely slow and some are busy, cue selling business has always been like that for me

Markets falling apart? Just read a piece that said credit card debt in the USA has topped $1 Trillion. That tells me there are lots of people buried past their eyebrows. This has to have a bearing on consumer buying habits.
inflation is a bitch

I bought a bunch of cues during COVID. Prices seemed to be very low then. For example, I bought a really nice Runde for $1,000 and now I see them listed for over $3k. I also bought a really nice Wes Hunter for $775, now roughly the same cue is $1,800. I also bought a plain jane Cog for $700.
still got the cog? lol

Did the cue market fall apart?

No only the Meucci's.
I for one, am still a Meucci fan. I currently own five and have bought and sold about 10 others with no problems. I did endure the long repair cycle under the last year of the prior ownership but now that Seth and his partner have taken over the company, I already see positive change. Turn times are dramatically reduced, quality is there, they respond to emails, the website is completely revamped, and you can actually do business with them quickly and confidently. I have stopped using my Schon and one of my Meucci's is now my daily player and I love it, combined with a Mezz Ignite CF shaft. I recently sold a few of my Meucci setups and all of them sold at the asking price within a week. I also ordered some misc stuff from their website, which was always hard to do and forced me to Julia's website instead; but now, the direct Meucci order was on my doorstep two days later. I needed an exchange on the order, and they processed it in less than 24 hours and sent me a no charge shipping label.

I am currently selling a 97-21B with a LD Pro shaft and a CF Pro shaft, in order to upgrade to a Casino-10 Meucci. To each his own.

Companies evolve, especially when ownership changes. I'm bullish on Meucci again.

For me personally, I never had interest in a 2nd hand custom cue. For me, each custom cue I own means something personal to me. If it was designed for someone other than me, I immediately lose all interest. I worked with the artists making the cues to bring my vague vision to life and long the way, I chime in with suggestions when asked for them. With the exception of my curly maple Sneaky from Jerico, my Owen and Eddie O cues are 1 of 1 in this world. That probably means they might sell poorly, but I myself will never sell them. The Nitti I will be getting soon, while much more traditional, is also something that I picked with my own initial concept and then brought to life by his skills and creativity.

Did you design the wall case?
I like it a lot.

(apologies if this is a naive question & everyone else knows where it came from :) )

smt
Andrew Rounceville built the case. Best of my knowledge he started selling them here maybe 10 or 15 years ago. Now he's the guy who builds many of the full splice blanks cue builders buy. I got that case on Jan 2, 2013. Reason I know the exact date is you should see the case that the case was shipped in. So nice I kept it.

From a players perspective who has never bought a collectors cue: Shaft technology has changed, and may continue to change going forward. They are expensive, both wood LD and Carbon Fiber, so a players investment in his shafts can be considerable if they like to try new shafts. Perhaps there will be a growing market for custom and production butts available in all joint types? But yeah, there is truth in the old adage that a sinking tide lowers all boats. The economy sucks for sure.
