Did this shot skid?

It's caused by extra friction between the cue ball and the object ball. If one or both of them are unusually dirty and sticky they don't slide off each other the usual way. The cue ball will briefly grip or rub the object ball, shoving it a little in the direction the cue ball is already moving. Hence the ball undercuts.

In extreme cases a rolling cue ball will even climb up the face of the other ball, leave the table briefly, then plunk back down. This is the cause of the loud clack or thud sounds you sometimes get on a bad skid, it's the cue ball coming back down and hitting the table.

If you google Dr Dave billiards skid you can see a video of it in his site.

Pretty sure that a skid or slide is due to NO friction not extra friction. You slide on ice right?? Thats because there is almost no friction between you and the ice surface. Same go's for pool balls and cloth.

No. The bad result when you get a skid/cling/bad contact is due to too much friction and it's friction between the balls. For shots like that, the cloth has no effect.

A different situation is seen on brand new cloth when the balls slide a lot on the cloth. They are very slow to get natural roll, and you can see the rotation pause and reverse as a stripe rolls straight into a cushion. Also, as balls bank off of cushions at an angle, you get large curves in the path of the balls after the cushions. That is sliding and it has nothing to do with skid/cling/bad contact.

(To complicate the terminology, players in the UK use the term "kick" for bad contact between the balls, and some of them use "throw" for what people in the US would call "deflection" or "squirt" of the cue ball when using side spin.)

This is not true. If you have "excess" side spin, an skid can produce an overcut.

Oops. I follow, sort of like the infamous 90 degree cut... ball crud amplifies the friction from spin and allows you to cut more than usual. Hadn't though of that in my reply, was just thinking of a vertical axis shot.

I'm starting to see the live stream players clean the cue ball, either on their pants or on the cloth before each break.

Yes, the common way is to roll it hard against the cushion with the palm of your hand. Some put it into their pants pocket which allows the additional possibility of surreptitiously putting a little silicone on the ball. I think a better way is to have a (microfiber) cloth that is known to be clean and for both players to use.

You cannot underestimate the skullduggery some guys will stoop to.

*Never* let the other guy use his personal towel to wipe the ball down or put it into his pocket to clean it. Wiping it on the front of the jeans is, I guess, OK.

"You cannot underestimate the skullduggery some guys will stoop to."

The first day of the winter nine-ball league (Tuesday's at 11:00am) at the senior center (no table time) I got to play Henry. When it was my turn to shoot Henry started practicing on the next table. Well, I didn't like him practicing when we are suppose to be playing a match. So, while he wasn't looking, I started moving balls around. Then he caught me with my hand on the eight ball. My excuse was that he wasn't looking and since he cheated first then I was allowed to cheat. Then I called Wally over for a ruling. After a long discussion I decided to concede the game. I had Henry so flustered that I won the match 4-1.

Now what were we talking about? Oh yea... skid.
