Did you know this about Buddy Hall, The man!!!

I went to a tournament once....65 entries.....with 65, you have to do
a 128 sheet with 63 byes.
So a player whom I can't recall has to play Buddy for the extra round.

Danny Diliberto looks at the draw sheet and says "Look at this poor guy.
63 byes and he has to play first round...and it's Buddy Hall he draws.
I don't wanna go to the racetrack with this man....and for sure I don't
wanna be flying on the same plane."

And he's heck of a nice guy. Long story short, Buddy and Nick Varner crash at my house for the night after their pool school in Chicago last year. My wife was cool with it but was "expecting" something completely different than the two gentleman that show up.....

Buddy is a heck of nice guy to boot. I hope he gets well soon. My wife really liked him... pretty down to earth and could not have been nicer to my family and friends..... My son likes calling him "Cecil".... he just digs the name...

He is one of the good ones.... Get well soon. :thumbup:
 
Anyone thought of trying to get Buddy into one of those biggest losers type of shows?? I think it would be great for his health and great for pool in general if they could show all of America "The Rifleman" They seem to like to bring in past athletes so a world champion pool player would likely be an inside track if the rest of his health issues would allow it.....

Biggest Losers is a weight loss show where the WINNER is the person who loses the most weight, hence the play on words.

Buddy's up there in years, I don't know if he would pass the health tests to be able to take part. If so it would great.

For everyone else you can lose weight playing pool.

Do speed pool. Try to run out a full rack in a minute. Do this ten times a day and you will lose weight. Want to move even more? Do it where you can take ball in hand on every shot. Try to run a rack this way in 30 seconds.

This works. By the time you are done you will have sweated plenty. Do this for 30 minutes a day and see what happens.

Back inthe early 70's i lived in a small town in Arkansas only about 90 miles from Shreveport. the only newspapers we got was the Shreveport Times and Arkansas Gazzette.
one day I was reading the Times and in the sports section was the full page article about Buddy Hall. It gave a brief Bio and stated he was willing to play anyone, anyone and gaurnteed, $50,000 worht of action. he was automatically my hero.
A buddy and myself went to Shreveport that weekend and directly to Guys & Dolls where h was known to hang out.
The pool room was on the bottom floor of wne of the larger office builings downtown. Thee was a room to the side that had once been a barber shop with 2 Gold crowns and a big poster on the wall that said, "this room is dedicated to Buddy Hall, the best living 9 ball player and the best there has ever been."
We hung round the room and overheard that he was to play some guy the next day named Louie Roberts. Buddy was giving the 7 ball and they were to play 8 haead for $2500. This was to take place Sunday afternoon at 1 PM and I knew where I would be.
We got a room and stayed over and I was so anxious, I could barely sleep.
Now nearly 40 years later I feel as though I witnessed one of the greatest 9 ball matches ever. Itlasted about 20 hours and Buddy came out 4 sets ahead. The only person to stay as long as me was Redd Box, Buddys backer.
Buddy was much lighter then and in pretty good shape. he hammered on poor Louie for endless hours and hours. It seemed that every time Louie pushed out Buddy would punish him with long banks, short banks, combinations, or some crazy safety.
louie never stopped chattering and Buddy rarely spoke a word. Lopies associate or girlfrien, a stoned knockout finally had seen all she could and just left handing Louie a large roll which he kept putting into play.
It isn't like louie played so badly either, he just didn't shoot much.
Buddies style and grace had a profound impact ont e way I looked at the game from that pint on.
About 3 years later I got play him at the Tropicana in Vegas and I don't even want to discuss the result of that.
i iam biased of course but Buddy is by far the vest 9 ball player I ever saw.
i will remeber that day for the remaider of my life!

To date the oldest participant has been 66... I think Buddy is 67 now... I think they look for good human stories for their potential contestants.... I know many have had major health issues so maybe he could get clearance especially since they are supervised the whole time by Doctors....

I don't know Buddy except in passing but if someone knows him or his manager and he wants a shot at getting back into fighting shape and getting some face time on TV I couldn't imagine a better guy to have that help and shot......

I think that would be a wonderful idea.
I don't care if he can't make a ball after....
..the pool world needs him around.

The Miz would still be with us if he had done something like that.
 
Great Idea guys!

The pool world and players need Buddy Hall around as long as he can be around! He is a great asset to the pool world. He thanks all of you all for your concern and best wishes. He told me to thank everyone. He is going to try to go to Tampa, Fl, this week if he feels up to it. He said he was doing much better and could not lay around doing nothing. Buddie was "the man" for sure

I was lucky enough to be around Buddie a lot in the 70s...Both as a victim and road partner. Trust me, one is a lot better than the other. When he gets going, his play can only be described as "uncanny." Once Buddie gets into position he hits every ball almost the same speed. They roll in so slowly they don't even hit the back of the pocket. He was giving me the six in Shreveport "practicing" for five a game. He was twenty games ahead before I finished my Coca Cola. I asked him How do you hit the ball so softly and still be so accurate?" He said "Alfie, that's because I'm a good player". Screw him. It didn't matter what he gave me, he never missed one ball. Fade some of that action and see if your Adam's apple doesn't turn into an Adam's grapefruit. Eddie Taylor told me Buddie was the best nine-ball player he had ever seen. Coming from a guy who once ran fifteen racks, not to mention his making 37 banks in a row, that was a pretty good endorsement.Get well soon, Rifleman. The pool world needs you

Here is a clip from '99....Buddy is 54 and at least 100 pounds over weight
but still shows that golden stroke.
I first saw him in the 70's when he was fit...in this video he looks like he's
gasping for air...and still hits the ball so well it makes you want to cry.

..notice when a ball is bothering his bridge, Buddy always goes to the
short bridge...looks much more stable that jacking up from the other side
of the ball.

Ceasar the cat Morrales---LOL

Efren was playing Keith all night long the one night at Reds. I still have my Red's jacket from 1985. Probably a little small now. LOL

I played Buddy in North Carolina in 1984 and he beat me 11-2. What this means is...he missed two balls.

Mike Sigel was commentating one of Buddy's matches and made this quote, "This guy don't know how to play cuz he never has to hit a hard shot!". Of course, he was joking about Buddy's uncanny position play.

I watched Buddy play more than a few times. His methodical stroke would put you to sleep. It always amazed me how he looked like he hit the ball half the speed of other players to get where he was going.

Hey Stones,
I was on the phone with Buddy Hall the night before his wife went into the hospital, and talking to Buffalo who owns Buffalo's Billiards, the worlds pool hall. And I told Buffalo that Buddy was a 12 time world champion. Buddy told me to tell him that he was also 5 time pool player of the year. Now that is strong! Good post.

1991 International Challenge of Champions

Met Buddy at Jay Helferts, LA Open in Burbank.
He was awesome.

To me the best player that beat Buddy soundly.
Was Mike Lebron at the 1991 International Challenge of Champions.
Spanish Mike put the fear into Buddy, Buddy missed some easy shots.

In 1990 or 1991 at continental Inn in Lexington, KY, Buddy beat parica in a tournament-(?) Lexington all stars. billy Incadona did really sweat over that match. I now don`t remember any details and all I remember was it was a nail biter:cool:
