Different bank pool rules

Playing banks as a youngster, we always played bank pool allowing three or more rail kicks. We also allowed combinations. At the Derby, it has been for some years no kicks, kisses or combinations. Are there other rules people play by, and what is the most popular? Everywhere I have played it has been the rule to allow kick shots of three or more rails.

I've only played what might be called "pure banks" where the first thing the cue ball hits must be the ball you're banking and that ball is not allowed to hit anything else after that except the cushions called and in the right order. (Of course, minor cushion contact by the pocket is ignored.) Double kiss banks, for example, are not allowed.

Thanks for the reply. Other than the Derby, I had never played with those rules. As long as you called kisses, combinations, double kisses, whatever, it counted. It sure made for some interesting shots attempted.

I think kick shots might be allowed in the DCC banks ring game to keep things moving. I can't find the ring game rules on-line in a brief search.

The DCC general bank rules are on-line: No kick shots.

I have seen banks played all over the country and have never seen it played where kisses and combos count.

I have seen it played where you can kick a ball three rails or more though.

That was always the way Banks was played throughout the Midwest and South when I was playing, tournaments or money games. Only in a Banks ring game were three rail kicks allowed.

The only controversial shot in Banks was on a long rail bank where the object ball hits the edge of the side pocket and runs down the rail into the corner. Some guys always wanted that one to count but it shouldn't and usually didn't, but it was still a good idea to clarify that before the match started.

Styer had one of those in the Mosconi Cup. (It was nine ball, so the cushion contact was irrelevant.)

Another problematic shot is when the OB is close to the cushion and it's not clear whether the cue ball hits the cushion first or not. An example is when a ball is frozen to the long rail at the headstring and you play a twist bank back to the head pocket by the ball. I think the only way you can do this is by sinking the cue ball into the cushion before hitting the ball. If the ball is a little off the cushion and you bank it to the other head pocket contact order can be really hard to see.

'Cause it ain't a bank :nono:

Sometime the simplest explanations are all you need.

We played by same rules as Bob and Jay, where I used to get beat up.

And my recollection of the dcc mod is aligned with Bob's...kicks were permitted to maintain pace of play.

I'm not sure I understand the shot you described. But I'm also not sure if I took my meds yet or not.

My first exposure to banks was downtown Cleveland in the 70's.

No ball could be banked if it was frozen to another.
