Different Cues/Setups for different games?

Hi Gang,

Just curious to know if anyone uses different setups or entirely different cues for the different games (Straight, Nine, Eight, One Pocket, etc.)?

For me, I seem to shoot straight pool better with a Bender cue that I have that has full 13mm shafts and weighs in at 19oz. For 9-ball, I shoot better with either a Cognoscenti or Omega cue that I have. Both are shorter than the standard 58" and both are about 18.4oz and 12.75mm to 12.5mm shafts. I'm not sure if its a mental thing or not, but its what works for me, thats why I'm asking. Thanks in advance to those that answer.

You pretty much nailed it when you stated "its what works for me". I dont know of anyone (I can think of) that uses more then one cue for different games. But alot of people don't have Bender and Cognoscenti cues to choose from :)

Exactly.

I use a Joss for everything except breaking and sometimes 3 cushion.

FYI- I was using one of my nice cues for 3c and I loosened the ferrule.

I use my Meucci OLD-1 strictly for 1 hole which is
usually all I play on a big table. I like a sneaky pete
or a graphite for bar pool.

I think in your case its mental and what you works for you. Personally I use 2 Benders for playing. One Bender Sneaky Pete for my APA league... And my hi end Bender for all other games played in a non-bar environment. Just to make the cues more consistant/feel, I replaced the ferrule on the sneaky pete to an ivory ferrule so that it matches my other bender cue. I prefer ivory ferrules anyway...

Not a good sign. But 3c is the game you need something different for IMO. I don't get to play much and am not a very good 3C player, but the difference between a pool cue and billiard cue is significant IMO, and when I get to play I use a billiard cue. I think a pool cue should be able to take it, but a billiard cue works better. Back in the day plenty of people played 3C w/ crappy willie hoppes on slow cloth and they didn't constantly bust. I have played billiards with a pool cue and never had a maintenance type problem. I have seen even some good billiards players who play with pool cues and they don't break or anythinhg. Billiard cues do perform a lot better for the game IMO tho.

Erik has hit the nail on the head. I too, believe it's more mental. It normally takes me a rack or two to get used to a different cue. I have a SP Wes Hunter that I used in APA, and a high end used in real games. If I switch from my Hunter to my Richard Black it takes a rack or two to get used to the different balance and feel of the cue.

This is just me though. If it works for you, keep on doing it!

Jim
