  • Wireless Charger AC Adapter
  • DigiCast TV Module
  • HDMI to mini-HDMI cable
  • DigiCast AC Adapter
  • Aluminum phone stand

DigiBall Overview:

The DigiBall® is a patented electronic cue ball that automatically detects the exact tip location when hit. Because it uses gravity as a reference there is no need for manual alignment (unlike traditional training balls). Information is sent wirelessly via Bluetooth® to an Apple or Android device. All balls are perfectly balanced, perfectly round, weigh the same as a regulation ball and made from Aramith® resin.

Why?

The point of the DigiBall is to measure the accuracy of your stroke so that you can compare it to your intentions. Novice players may not give any thought to the importance of where on the face of the cue ball they hit it, as long as the cue ball makes the object ball go in the pocket. But for any high level of play, it is extremely important. Hitting the ball too much on one side of center will cause it to deflect in the opposite direction of your aiming line, resulting in a miss. Advanced players know this, and use deflection in combination with deliberate tip offset to both pocket the object ball and spin the cue ball off of the rails into desired positions. However, deviations in the accuracy of deliberate off-center tip hits still cause inconsistent results. By obtaining real time feedback on where you actually hit the ball and comparing it to where you intended to hit the ball, you can make adjustments quickly and effectively.

Quick Start Guide:

Unpack the materials in the box. Plug the round wireless charger into the AC adapter and into the wall. A blue light should illuminate. Place the DigiBall black-dot-face-down into the center of the concave section of the charger (this will wake the DigiBall from Ship Mode). Next, download the DigiBall app from the Android/Apple play store if you haven’t already. Open the app and enable Bluetooth if prompted. Navigate to the Devices page (icon with antenna) and select the DigiBall device with it appears. Navigate to the Shooting page (icon with cue ball) and start playing!

A fully charged ball will give you about 16 hours of continuous play. When you are done, place the ball back on the charger black-dot-face-down to recharge. Full charging takes about 4 hours. (Note: The wireless charger itself will not indicate the charge status. You can see what the status is by opening the Shooting page in the app and looking at the bottom right status dial.)

The app has an exclamation mark icon and a question mark icon in the top bar of the main page and Shooting page, both of which provide you information and instructions. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at
nataddrho@digicue.net.

Power Modes:

  • Normal Mode: The ball software is running and will send information to your mobile device. The ball will automatically go to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity (motionless).
  • Sleep Mode: The ball is in a low power mode, and occasionally monitors for a change in orientation to wake up.
  • Ship Mode: Hibernation. The battery is internally disconnected from the microcontroller inside of the ball and no power is consumed. This is for long-term storage or transportation/shipping. The only way to wake the ball is to place it on the charger. The ball can be placed into Ship Mode by holding the ball still, black-dot-face-up, and temporarily placing the charger on top of the ball, concave-section-down, like the ball is wearing a hat. “SHIP MODE” should appear in the lower right status dial on the Shooting page of the app.

DigiCast TV Kit:

Optional Evaluation; Also included is a DigiCast TV Kit. This is essentially a module that reads Bluetooth signals directly from the ball and displays them on a TV or monitor. This bypasses the need for using your personal mobile device, and effectively shows information on a large screen that can be easily seen from across the room. The limitation is that the information displayed is non-interactive, unlike the app, so you can’t save shot histories. To use the kit, just plug it onto a power supply and into your TV, and then after boot-up, bring an awake DigiBall close to the receiver to connect. The DigiCast also works with the DigiCue Blue, so feel free to try them both together.

Things to try with the DigiBall:

  • Play any game you want and work on your pre-shot routine mental process. Pick out your shot and the path you want the cue ball to take. Position your body in line with your personal shot line center. Then while still standing, think about exactly where you want to hit the cue ball with your tip. Not just the general area, but use precision, i.e. 5:30 near center, for example. (You can use your finger to place a prediction chalk mark on the app if you like, but isn’t necessary). Then bend down, prepare for your shot, and shoot. The DigiBall will tell you where you actually did hit the ball. Compare it to your intentions and the results of the shot.
  • Set up the same shot and shot it over and over again. Start a session so you can track your results, and then end the session when you are done. The History page will show your statistical spread of your accuracy over many shots.
  • Measure your break speed with accuracy. Hold down the bottom left status dial and slide your finger to select the distance between the CB and OB. Shoot your shot. Then hold down the bottom right status dial and select the time that your CB hit the OB. The speed will appear in the bottom left dial with high accuracy.
  • Investigate the dynamics of your shot. For your curiosity you can increase the resolution of time series data of the first 2.5 seconds of your shot, and look at the acceleration and spin over time. It is interesting to see how rails and jumps affect the spin and behavior of the ball.
  • Export your data. Share data to yourself and analyze the CSV file in Excel or other software in whatever way you want.
I'll give it a shot.

If you haven’t sent me your address info yet please do so. I’ll be compiling the list and getting the order figured out in the first half of this week I’m hoping, will probably plan to get the DigiBall sent out to the first spot on 2/3 or 2/4 once I’ve had a few days to try it out myself.

The box will contain pre printed shipping labels for everyone with your return address and the next persons shipping address to make it easy.

More details to follow for participants as I get all the details and order figured out.

Thanks all!

I’d gladly join in testing the new DigiBall but not much reason to when you already have a full array of Az participants that seem very well suited to evaluating it and presenting their opinions for all other interested persons to review. I can understand everyone’s enthusiasm for volunteering to test but the qualification requirements set forth for participating really make sense.

Besides, the people chosen are all known to be active participants on Az so let’s just congratulate them for being picked. At the same time, not overlook the imminent hard work involved and let these 10 testers know we appreciate their time & effort to make this a successful beta test. I’ve posted for awhile that DigiBall could be the most fantastic thing to happen for pool.

Just wanted to update everyone. I have the DigiBall and am getting everything in order to start the passaround next week. I will be taking it out for my own demo over the weekend and then I plan to get this on the way to the first participant on Tuesday.

I have roughed out the order based on geographic location to keep this from crisscrossing the country unnecessarily. With a 7 day demo period and a 2-4 day shipping time, I figured roughly 11 days from 1 participant to the next. This is rough and doesn't account for weekends, holidays etc, but should provide an idea of roughly when you'll receive the DigiBall.

If anyone has issues with this timing please shoot me a message and I'll see if we can adjust things.

I’d like to suggest that the participants get at least two (2)weeks to beta test the new DigiBall.

However, I think they should really have at least three (3) weekends to test it which could involve
them having others test it so they can see a variety of different sets of data for different skill levels.

It would allow them to compare and contrast the results, as well as evaluate any discernible patterns
or trends a player might find helpful. After the 3rd weekend, the evaluator should ship the ball to the
next scheduled recipient the next day (Monday). There isn’t any reason to accelerate completing
a beta test sooner. Additionally, besides posting their remarks on Az, the participants need to offer
their most earnest critique of the new DigiBall to its inventor.

Yes, their critique is what is more important than praise. Telling the inventor it’s a great product is less
important than reporting back what tweaks would help, especially with data retrieval and display. A
summary of the information, especially in pie chart format, would be helpful and by clicking on any of
the chart sections, it would display the details of that information. Too much information burdens the
viewer with finding what they are most interested in initially seeing. Start with a bigger picture that can
zoom in with more information gradually based on what the viewer wants to see. Don’t overwhelm them.

The way the data is communicated and displayed will go a long way on DigiBall being as popular and
genuinely beneficial as I always thought it could become. So testers should look at the data and see if
it can be arranged and displayed better and faster. The notion of shoot and go look at the information
becomes somewhat disconnected from learning unless you were performing the same shot multiple times
to allow you to see a pattern or what you averaged for that particular shot. The testers need to offer criticism
that opens the door for improvement but it goes without saying, do not nit pick or dwell on the mundane.

Anyway, I believe this beta test should allow each participant ample opportunity to thoroughly evaluate the
new DigiBall. I think the next step after this is to get a few of the Master PBIA Instructors to test the DigiBall.

I have a close friend, Tommy Hill, who is a Master PBIA Instructor and former professional pool player. I would
eagerly nominate as someone highly qualified and interested in evaluating the new DigiBall. Any tool that helps
aspiring pool players to improve their skills by seeing what they are not doing correctly or consistently is great.

The package includes the DigCast TV kit, the AC adapter, and phone stand (each in one of the small white boxes). The black pouch contains the DigiBall itself as well as the charging dock.

I have included an envelope taped to the inside of the box lid that contains all the address labels that will be needed. They are lightly numbered in the top right corner, just make sure when you go to send it off your name is in the return address spot and that should be all that is needed (they are also in order currently in the envelope). Behind that there is another folded envelope with the full excel spreadsheet of contact names, address, phones, and emails. Just in case I fall off the face of the earth or any other unforeseen issues happen, I wanted the passaround members to have a way to get in touch with each other directly. Hoepfully this will not be needed.

It is my hope this box will survive the full trip, please note how it opens, ideally we should be able to just tape it down across that front lid edge which should make it easy to cut open and keep in good shape from user to user.

Please message the tracking number to the next recipient and myself once on the way so everyone will know to expect it's arrival. @fastone371 this will be heading to you today, so tracking number will be sent later this afternoon after my post office run.

As Nate has outlined in his comments, please charge the DigiBall for 4 hours before sending on to the next person.

I will be starting the "DigiBall Passaround Feedback and Reviews" post tomorrow probably. Please use that thread to post all reviews and feedback from this process. I will link to that thread here once it is live.

You will need to download the app onto your phone for this process, I found it easily in the iPhone app store by searching "DigiBall". Setup was super smooth and easy, very intuitive. There are some great tips within the app if you run into questions, just the "?" and "!" icons in-app for guidance.

Finally, a huge thank you to @nataddrho for giving us this opportunity!! DigiBall is really cool and my brief time with it was quite informative. I'll put my detailed thoughts into the reviews post tomorrow but I'm impressed with it and can really see it becoming a useful training tool but also a standard of quality instruction and coaching. It's really amazing to see exactly where you strike the cue ball in real time.
