Discovery of subtle error helped me

Maybe a little complicated, but its not. Learned that moving my hand to the contact point instead of to the center of the ball makes a big difference. Maybe it'll help you too?

All good, except I don't quite get your last drawing.

I'm left handed, and sometimes I swoop the back of the cue towards my body on the final stroke. Is that what you were doing?

When I do that using a training cueball, the chalk mark left by the tip on the ball about 1/8" left of center on a "center ball" stroke.

You are making a simple game way too hard. I think the first moon landing had less diagrams.

Thanks for the drawings. I thought I was simply obsessive and anchored to center ball. Nice to know I am not alone in my obsession :o For me everything runs off that center line. I also use front and back hand English like you do.

The idea I have hit on lately is to see a line to the pocket from three inches behind the contact point through the OB to the pocket. The line through the OB has seriously improved my consistency.

I forget who it was, (UnknownPro I think) who basically said to use the cue stick like a pointing device and to aim with the cue tip. I had never really thought that way before and that lead me to always begin by "pointing" through center ball.

... my stroke now feels more pure (kind of "buttery" compared to "punchy" as it was), I realized that my grip could loosen up.
These are both "tells" for me too - when I'm lining up straight and not "steering".

I figured out your problem. You f@&}|÷% think too much.

This made me laugh, but in all honesty I have to agree. Get on the table and practice, nothing can beat that. I guess you could say that Im more of a "feel" type player, maybe its just a natural ability and understanding of the game I have ionno. Best of luck

I suppose from now on I'll keep my progress to myself. No problem.

I can appreciate stroke flaws and fixing them. I've had mine and recently changed my grip. This changed my stroke slightly and helped with my overall game. I no longer steer the cue ball and have spastic episodes. happy0129.gif

I'm probably moving in the opposite direction stroke wise. Mine is less "buttery" and more punchy. In time the smoothness will be back. I'm not worried because the balls are falling!

Best,
Mike

I do an equivalent thing. I became aware that when one draws a line from the pocket to the object ball, they are referencing the "front" of the OB, not the center. So I simply aim where I want the front surface of the OB to go (usually right past the closest point of the pocket) instead of directly in the center of the pocket.

I combine these two techniques. I see a line through the OB + 1 1/8 inch (the ghost ball center) and point my stick at its end (for centerball shots).
