Discussion Contribution - Compliments

Since, up to this point, I have only introduced myself and asked questions, I will make an attempt to actually contribute to the discussions on this board.

Best compliment you have received from players.

For me, I was playing in a tournament at Diamond Billiards in Chattanooga. Landon Shuffett ( 11 year old phenom ) was playing the table beside me. After a hard fought match with Cliff Joyner's friend "Hedgehog" I think that was his name. He had beaten me 9-6. Landon came over to me and told me "You play pretty good". In my brief tournament playing experience this was the best compliment I have received to date.

Looking forward to hearing your stories.

I played in a celebrity Scotch Doubles match with Efren as my partner (if you haven't heard about this, just PM breakup for details; he seems to be quite fixated on the match); against Jeanette Lee and mthornto on the television table (tight Diamond).

JL was sharking me unmercifully every shot for the 3 games we played - bumping my cue as I was lining up, kneeling in front of the pocket as I was shooting, dangling her hair in my eyes as I was shooting, talking to me as I was shooting. Mthornto was doing his part by sprinkling chalk on the object ball just before I shot. The crowd was laughing for the better part of the match.

Efren and I ended up running out all 3 games without a miss. A former world champion came up to me afterwards and said something like, "damn, I don't think I could even have hit the cueball under those conditions."

After an incredible game 14.1 (for me anyways, the other guy didn't have much of a chance :D) an old timer came up to me and said that I reminded him a bit of Jersey Red.

At a local dive, after a bitter, grinding 8 ball bar box game, I finished my longest run of the night (a three ball run, ending with the eight called, all hangers) a drunk, poorly groomed and dressed women comes up (she appeared homeless) and said to me through about 3~4 teeth she had "Hey, you shoot a pretty good stick, Mister."

I never felt more proud. I remember hearing she passed out in the women's stall and had to be carried out later, but I never really had the opportunity to thank her.

:p

I hope you cherish that moment and tell your grandkiddies about it.

(That reminds me of a not-so-clean joke about a women that gets drunk and passes out at a bar. Anyone can PM me if you wanna hear it.)

Gregg,
GREAT story. I wish you hadn't brought breakup's mother into it though - I guess "like mother, like son."

I played Bob Maidhoff in a 14.1 tourney a few years back. I broke, he went 124, and missed. I sulked up to the table and ran an ok 28....missed a breaker, and he went out. Afterward he said..."you had me worried there for a minute".....I'm sure it was tongue in cheek, but he is such a nice guy. All I could come up with was......uhhhh yea, a real short minute!....:D

My first shining moment was probably beating my mentor Andy Toth for the first time a race to 9 9ball....$5 a game on the spread. We always played even, and I won the flip...ran 3, and played safe, ran 2, broke in a 9, and FINALLY won after stressing a 9/7 set. He shook my hand and said " I want everyone to see the most improved player in eastern PA!" I was on another level mentally after that day.

Challange Table

I got on the 9 ft. challange table and played for beers. I was there for about 15 minutes and had 20 beers lined up on the bar. Kid comes over and asks, "are you gonna drink all that beer"? I said fugging ay right I am. He replied, "Your awsome"! Then I commenced to get drunk.:D
Purdman:eek:

After passing up a somewhat difficult get away in a golf game that left my man hung out a bit someone said...

“In his defense it would have taken balls to try that shot”

Two stories come to mind, both of which occurred (in different years) at the Downingtown, PA 14.1 championship.

The first was a couple years ago. In the finals, playing Maidhof, he opened with a 44 or so, and then tried a fairly crazy "dead" ball. He missed, and I ran 142. About 110 balls into the run, between racks, he looked at me, smiled, and said, "Guess I shouldn'ta gone for that 10 ball." It was pretty funny.

The other was at the most recent tournament. Allen Hopkins turned to Danny Barouty, while they were both watching one of my matches. Danny tells me Allen said to him, "Hey, Steve plays pretty good." Later, Danny told me how much a comment like that, coming from Allen, means.

It reminds me to be as supportive as I can of other players in the room. For all the "better" players reading this, try and give some encouragement to the learning players in your room. They will appreciate it more than you know.

with shock and some sadness: "you never gave me a chance- there was nothing i could do that whole match. i mean, i just never got a shot."

this from a MUCH better player than me- I was so scared when I saw who i drew, that I put everything I had into that match.

The best compliment that I've ever gotten was when I was able to challenge Gerda Hoffstatter after the ProAm. It was only two games and I got to break on the first one. In my first attempt at breaking I miscued badly and heard a voice from the audience say, "Oh great, this is going to be good" in a condescending tone.

Gerda was kind enough to let me have another try and on the second break I made the two, I think. I then made the one and played safe on the three. She kicks at the three and almost safes me back but I get lucky and the ball kicks off the point of the side pocket enough so I can see it and I run out. I then break and run the second rack. After this Gerda came up to me and thanked me for the games and actually said, "It was fun watching you play" and asked me if I played in tournaments and what not. I have to throw in there that Gerda just happened to finish second in that tournament...lol! :D :D

One of the best compliments I've gotten was after I had finished a private lesson with a student, at Chris's in Chicago several years ago. An older gentleman came up to me, and said, "I was watching the whole time you were teaching, and I'm very impressed! You would shoot a shot once, and let your student shoot it many times. Most teachers I've seen, shoot the shot many times, and only give the student a couple of chances!" I've always felt that way...that the student is the one there to learn, not to watch the instuctor try and "show off"! LOL

Kudos to Steve Lipsky on the comment about better players giving encouragement to others. It DOES make a difference...even to beginners!

i was playing a local short stop one night and he had his 2 stakehorses with him who i knew casually. We got into a cheap set (just something to do) kind of thing and i was just totally on fire. There was probably about 15 people sitting back there watching us play and me and one of the horses were talking about pool players, etc, while their boy was shooting and somehow we got on the subject of keith mccready.......they had met him somewhere and were talkin about what a character he was. I said id never met him but i had read where he used to wear a tshirt that said "the worlds got the 8", which i thought was cool. After running 2 or 3 racks on their boy the one horses said "you may not have met him but you sure shoot like him". That made me puff up a bit. Of course i ended up losing the race like 5-4 lol.
