Lets see If I can make everyone mad! Here is the way it looks from the outside looking in on big time pool:

You didn't make me mad, but I am not quite sure what your points have to do with the topic. But I will address them anyway.

1. Not a lot tournaments because there is no legitimate money in pool.

Depends on what you consider legitimate. Actually there are a lot of tournaments, just not a consistent amount and no regular Men's/Open tour in the USA for pros.

2. You need sponsors to have tournaments.

Not really. A tournament was just concluded in Olathe where all the participants put up $3000 each and all the prize money came from entry fees.

3. We dont have sponsors because the general public could care less about
pool.

4. It seems that a WHOLE lot of people in pool want something for nothing.

How do you figure that? Example please?

5. A WHOLE LOT of people act like they are owed something now, for
something they did 20 years ago.

Who are these people? Perhaps though if we did a bit more 'remembering' and honoring those who "did something" 20 years ago then we'd be better off instead of disrespecting them.

6. Pool has a bad reputation for a reason...deal with it...its the truth.

Pool has a bad reputation? If it still does what does this have to do with the topic being discussed in this thread?

7. Pool players need to become organized and form a QUALITY players union if they want to change any of this stuff.

Agreed. Nothing new here. But what does this have to do with the topic?

8. There needs to be a TRUE unified governing body of pool that EVERYONE recognizes.

Good luck.

9. Just because you are great at something...doesnt mean you should be rich.

I didn't see anyone say it should. However being great at something should at least get you respect for being great at it.

10. If you thought you were gonna get rich playing pool...you were wrong...go to school and get a damn job. (Sorry, I just get tired of listening to crying about how much money people make...FOR PLAYING A GAME!!!!!!!)

It's a game and it's a sport and for some it's a profession. I don't think any top players harbor any illusions that they are going to get rich playing pool. Many dream of it and the IPT seemed like it was going to make it a reality to achieve wealth through pool. However many pro players are rich already if you consider that they manage to exist doing what they love on their terms rather than being shackled to a 9-5 job. I didn't really see anyone crying in this thread about how much money they don't make though.

Listen, I make 35,000 a year and work my tail off and I teach school. I influence the lives of hundreds of students every year and i make a whopping 35,000 a year. I have never once complained about my job and I have never once complained about my pay. I knew it was tough and pay diddly squat when I got into it. I am SICK and TIRED of pool players thinking that they deserve huge payouts in tournaments and stuff. They play a game for a living that 99% of the public could care less about. THINK ABOUT IT!

What does this have to do with the thread? Just because you personally don't complain about your pay doesn't mean that it is commensurate with the work you do. Plenty of folks, me included, feel that it is ridiculous to have underpaid teachers when CEO's, actors and athletes make millions. But since pool players ARE in fact quite underpaid as a group they do have every right to complain about the status quo. Especially if their earnings opportunities are further diminished through favoritism.

Listen, you guys...I love pool and I love pool players...but these discussions make a lot of people sick on this board. It gets really old. You must realize that pool is not a major sport and most people in the mainstream dont care. There is a ton of work to do in order to make this game great or whatever...but it is being done extremely wrong. My suggestion is to get a real job if you are not happy, and play this game as a hobby like the rest of us or begin to FIX the problems instead of fighting all the time.

Part of fixing a problem is identifying it in the first place. Squeaky wheel - grease.....

I know that a lot of people will bash me for this post...I dont care. I love all of you folks and I love this board...but a lot of people on here need to start living in the real world. Another too...another poster made a great point about some of the more "veteran" posters. Just because some of us are young or we are new to the board, doesnt mean that our comments are invalid. Maybe some a fresh perspective is what the board and pool needs.

Maybe, is this your fresh perspective? As a teacher which system is better to reward your students on? Merit or Popularity? What do you teach them, that they should play the political game and strive to be popular so they will be universally liked and get all the invites or that they should strive to accomplish things that are beneficial? Do you suggest to them that they should keep quiet when wrongs are committed or should they stand up for what is right?

Peace
Aaron

Peace begins within.

BOMBER FOR PRESIDENT! You know Aaron, I like this post and I don't fully agree with all you have to say here either. Please don't put me out to pasture yet. :)

What I really like is your passion for the sport. I'm glad there are people like you on here. And Joey and several others. You are the future leaders of our sport whether you realize it or not.

It's true that Pool in America is not a major sport. But when I see the progress in Asia, I know anything is possible. Pool is not going away. Millions of people will still be playing when you are an old man.

Keep on posting and reading all the other posts. As time goes by, I have confidence that you will see where you can lend your support to make things a little better for our sport.

I remember an 18 year old boy who was enthralled by the skill of the champion players in Johnston City, but dismayed to discover how little respect they got from the sports media, and how little money they earned for their talent. I made up my mind right then, that if I could do anything about this I would. I believed then and still do, that these are among the most talented athletes in the world. I thought, rightfully so, that they should get proper recognition and compensation for their immense abilities.

After all these years, I don't feel like I have done enough or succeeded in my goals. In Europe the champion Snooker players are famous athletes and are rewarded accordingly. In Southeast Asia, particularly the Philipines, the champion players are well known sports stars. Somehow in my home country, this has not happened. So far, I have failed. Maybe you will succeed where I haven't Aaron. I hope so.

Tap, Tap, Tap to you and Aaron.

Mr. Barton...the post is meant to cover the entire thread, which is 19 pages long. I respect your opinions and your right to them. Kudos to you for having conviction.

I would like to address to you the last paragraph of my post. I teach my students to UNDERSTAND REALITY as it is and to make sure that they are not living in a fantasy land. No where in my post did I mention anything about playing any popularity games or political games. Actually, I teach the exact opposite. I want my students to understand the truths that await them on the paths that they choose for themselves.

By the way...Sometimes the truth really really hurts. Sorry.

Good reply to my post and positive rep points to you for it.

Haven't you heard? Sex sells. Good pool does not. Therefore, it seems prudent to some pool promoters to hand-pick young girls from other countries to compete in "World" Championships, as they believe this attracts the masses.

At the IPT tournament, men had to endure wearing hard leather shoes, long-sleeved shirts, suits and ties. The women, on the other hand, could wear as much or little as they wanted to. There did not seem to be a dress code for women. In fact, the less they wore, the better, in some circles.

JAM

Very well stated. Did you see the thread about Jeanette Lee's attire at the Sang Lee tournament? This post would fit in very well in that thread.

Jay and others. Thank you. I believe is honesty and reality. I am young at the age of 26 but I am also full of piss and vinegar! LOL! I can make people mad, but I try to speak what is on my mind. I only hope that good, honest citizens like myself continue to feel passionate about this sport. It can only make it better. I am not the greatest player in the world, but I don't hit em that bad either. You don't have to be a superstar to understand the game and the truth.

I was just mentioning how I didn't see it here (flaming). I don't have an opinion about you - at least not a negative one. I like reading your posts and the way you stand up for what you believe. That is what it is all about. I just think in this case - past experiences with Corvette are allowing you to over react a little. Keep standing up for what you believe.

BVal

P.S. Check your rep.

HEEELLLLLOOOOOOO, once again. You are a doll;)

Hi Frankie,

Thanks for the compliment.
I am secure enough in my own sexuality to be able to accept that coming from another man :D:D

I just want you to know that I won the softball toss at Field Day in the 7th and 8th grade. So don't mess with me buddy. :)

YOu all do know that you can set your account to display 40 posts per page right?

For me this thread is "only" 8 pages long. :-)

lol... so your basically saying that your page is longer than our page? Glad to see your getting your money's worth out of those pills, John.

An old saying that is appropos, "Reality is truth". Simple but eloquent.

Well the other guy said the thread is 19 pages. Not for me. I have the max display of 40 posts per page with avatars and ads turned off so the pages load faster. This way I can read most threads faster.

What about your attempts to flame everybody else? Why is it that when you disagree or tug on the nerves of others it always ends with you screaming for the moderators? After a while, perhaps they will see that it might be YOU that is the problem.

There hits a point when people will grow tired of you throwing your weight around and they will just stand up to you. IMO, you're not a player. Keith is. I respect him immensely for all that he is done. He is a legend worthy of all that comes with being a legend. He has earned that and I fully admit he is more of a player than I can ever hope and pray to be.

You are NOT Keith. I will respect you as a person - and I will give you the respect I give everybody else, but I will not respect some of the things that you say in this forum and the things that have gotten back to me through the grapevine. You not only argue with me, you argue with several others on a constant basis, so I don't feel as if I am out of line for pointing any of this out. You know I have taken strides to move forward from all of the bitterness that has existed between us. I'm not moving forward any with that any more. I'll let you, Dave Wilson, Mike Howerton know that as well. Enough is enough.

Very well said. I am one of probably many who have never weighed in on any of the back and forth between Jam and a number of other posters figuring there was no point in getting in the line of fire. However, her attacks have often been vicious and unrelenting. I sometimes wonder how many others observe this and never say anything. Maybe it is time for more to speak and put a stop to this viciousness.

It's terrible that the so called World Straight Pool event in New Jersey didn't use Pat Fleming and Accu-stats. Pat has paid his dues a hundred fold and he has the best commentators, too. And this was right in his backyard in upstate NJ.
I can't bring myself to watch any of it because I know in advance how bad the commentary will be and I'm still very upset that for the second year in a row no invite for ol Grad'. In my view, it's the worst thing that could happen to pool to have Charlie Williams and the UPA gain in power and influence.

THAT IS NOT WHAT MANY OTHERS THINK
