Do most "Pro's" use joint protectors?

honestly the only use for joint protectors aside from asthetics is sometimes its hard to pull the cue out of the case if you have it joint up, and with some cases with deep cue holes (for lack of a better term) shafts are too short for them and will get stuck in the case forcing you to screw your cue into your shaft while its still in the case, whereas if you had joint protectors you could just pull the shaft out.

I don't know of anyone who has had joint protectors on which saved their cue from an kind of damage. I'm guessing someone might have a story but maybe a 1 in 10,000 chance it is needed I guess. Custom ones look great.

I like themes with my cues. I try to match JP's, cases, wraps, etc. with the cue (see shark setup in the attachment...shark inlays, opposing teeth JP's, and a sharkskin case). Doesn't make 'em play any better and I really don't know about how much protection they offer, but let's face it, we could all drive Ford Focuses if all we needed was a functional ride...

Call me Anal (Oral Roberts's twin brother), but I have Custom JP's on ALL my Cues because I LIKE THEM !!! ... I also allow plenty of time to get my equipment ready when playing in a Tournament, so removing them and storing them in the Case is never a problem ...

You're gonna' love this one ........ I even Wax the Joint Pins and the Shaft Threads !!!

I know some pros who I definitely suspect protect their joints. For starters, I'm told that once they get wet they won't light up!

Thank you. Thank you. I'm here all week. Try the prime rib.

Since this thread has mutated into a "I am not a pro, but..."-discussion, I add my 2ct as well :-)

I prefer matching JPs for their aesthetics, and since my player's joint is made of aluminium which I consider a little less robust. I am somewhat anxious about the pin getting bent if the case is handled badly.

Trust me when I say this - if your case is handled so badly that such damage could occur, you won't be worrying about your joint. It would be like driving your car off a cliff and someone saying, "I advise buckling your seat belt."

One day for no apparent reason while my cue case that was strap over my shoulders the base of the case gave way. Both my break cue and play cue fell onto the hard concrete ground. My play cue had joint protectors on. The were made of white delrin. I can see lots of dents and scratches on it. there are some scratches on the cue also but when fixed up with the shaft the cue was fine.

The break cue was not so fortunate. It did not have any joint protectors. It suffered a bent pin and cracked forearm.

So now i always have joint protectors on the current cues i carry around and use.

The butt end of the case was probably around my buttocks area. so a drop from just that height could cause so much damage.
