do people prefere to choose full balls over striped balls because the full balls give them a better vision to aim?

i myself tend to chose full balls more often. no idea if its just how the balls are layed out or if i unintentionally prefere full over stripes, but it made me wonder if the stripes make it harder to aim for some.

ok thats it :) silly question of the week (yes ive got to much time in my hands :D )

greats.

i almost prefer stripes because it gives me MORE to aim at... like for long thin cuts once in a while i can pick a point on the strip to aim for for the cut.

just me.

in 9 ball i almost always choose the solid balls... i dont think i've shot a stripe on in that game... is that why i always lose?

I've heard that statistically, stripes are a little better over the long haul because of visual cues for judging contact point.

From now on though, I'm going with Jude's method: whatever group pisses me off less - I LOVE it.

Pick the balls that have the best layout, or best opportunity to get out even if it requires an easy breakout. Just make sure you get out. If not there are alot of open balls for your opponent to shoot at.

These are the two deciding factors for me,, that and which ghroup of balls tie up the 8. All things equal, I'll go with this,

i wonder how these camouflage balls or transparent playball balls play :D and how they influence your aiming. maybe the transparent balls are easyer to check on the contact points. as now u can see the cp from the cb.

(ps i never said i pick balls for looks :p for some reason the full balls happen to have a better spread more often. probably has more to do with in what order i rack the balls :) )

but often ballbangers prefere full balls. i can imagine better players prefere stripes for the extra reference points u can use to aim at. i aim pure at feeling so that plays no role to me.

maybe i should have asked this question to the first ballbangers i find in any random poolhall :)

All Things Being Equal I Prefer Stripes

I'll always select the set that seems to have the better lay, but I like shooting stripes for several reasons.
1) Many times the stripe of the ball lines up with a cut shot....it's easier to see the shot.
2) They look really cool on a long slow roll to the pocket when the ball rolls perpendicular to the stripe.
3) They have more aim points to help line up cuts or combo's.

I guess I like shooting them when I have them more for asthetic reasons than tactical ones.

The only real difference is solids will pick up more dirt due to their porosity. Because black absorbs heat quicker than light colors the same is true with its ability to pick up dirt. What's ironic, the 8-ball is the darkest and is able to pick up dirt the most. When you cut the 8 in at slower speeds it's more subject to scooting or sliding, its always best to cut the 8-ball in with at least a somewhat firm hit. But the layout after the break determines your best course of action, and like another poster said, its more difficult to see the cut angle of a dark ball on a dark surface, and add poor lighting or a light fixture too high, and old eyes or poor eyesight:eek:

i was at a show by tom rossman. he said there is a psychological advangage to taking the solids. when you play thru the stripes and youre on the 8 your brain cant handle it and youre more likely to miss b/c your brain in only geared up for shooting the stripes. i dont know, though. i always seem to lose no matter what i have.

I agree with this assesment. I suppose he could use that excuse every time he plays 9 ball.

I pick 'em based on ease of the out. Honestly I don't care much for eightball though. I am kind of a dumbass and all the extra balls confuse me. I much prefer 9-ball or as I like to call it Paint-by-numbers pool:D

I really don't care whether I get solids or stripes, perhaps because I don't even think of them in that manner. To me it's just a choice between 1-7 or 9-15. I'm taking the one's that will get me out first.:D
