Do some people not get eBay? or are they spiteful?

Why even bother with ebay,,,,,,,,you can run an auction anywhere,,,,,,,,without paying 10% or more in fees.

You have been selling this long and you didn't know a deadbeat bidder can leave you a negative even if you reported him before the feedback? Do you work for e-bay? I sold around 25,000 in silver last year, what do you think their fee's were including paypal since they do own it also? They have become loan sharks with the fee's they charge!
They will remove the neg. If you didn't like the fees you should have sold your silver to a local dealer, that is what I did. I dumped gold I have been sitting on since the early 80's. Because of the amount I was selling I struck a very good deal with a local buyer and we were both happy.
Didn't you know the fees in advance or did you think they did it for nothing? Why did you do the auctions if you didn't want to pay, it makes no sense?

Yeah I was one of the unlucky SOBs who got the form in the mail, went over that for the 12 month period through Paypal transactions.

You were told well in advance. I have always filed my ebay income with my taxes, it is just part on my business. Do you have a business license, don't you pay taxes?

Here is another tip. If you have a non payer, you do not get your seller fees back until you apply for them to be returned. It is funny, they can keep all the complex records, but it is so hard to keep track of payments received....

Let me also warn anyone who sells on e-bay that they do turn it in to the Irs after around 20,000.

:(

You need to sell at least 200 items and $20,000 worth of items to recieve the 1099K form.

Another reason why sellers are not selling as much or not selling at all.

To suck you in, ebay will give you free insertion fees and starting soon, free pictures.

Many older ebayers who are retired sell for other people as a hobby or a favor. And now, they are scared because of the IRS.

I used to sell a good bit on eBay until the fees became confiscatory. You can sell elsewhere but eBay has the big audience. Oh, well... :frown:

When i bought using 'Buy it Now' option many times there was a 'This seller requires immediate payment' for Buy it now transactions or something like that. If u can set that up- i wouldnt even give them 4 hours -Now means now!!

Yes, you would have to be aware of that because it is going to show as income to you.
I am at a bit of a loss though when I read people complain about ebay. They must have never been in a real business with rent electric insurance, licenses and so on. Ebay all you have is a fee for selling and that is based on what you sell.

Are you kidding me, you can't even lose money. Owning a store front business can be a nightmare with all the over head and you can work like crazy and make nothing or go completely broke. There are a lot of people making a lot of money on ebay. I am just mystified, here is something that has so much to offer and yet it isn't enough for many. They want to be in business for nothing and begrudge anyone else making any money. At a point, you really don't know what to say. My nephew sells high end collectible cars on ebay. Are you kidding, it would cost him a fortune to set up a business like that on a lot and how would he get buyers.

He sells cars where often the buyer has a local person represent them, inspect the car and it is trucked to them after the sale. Some buyers will actually fly in to see the cars. I don't even want to tell you what kind of money my nephew is making you would think I was making it up. His biggest problem is finding enough cars to sell. Many times he contracts with local dealers to sell on line for them. From RR to Porsche to classics Fords and Chevy's.

Before ebay he was working as a mechanic for a dealership hating every day of it. He rented an apartment from me (Real cheap he is family) and we started talking ebay, he knew nothing about it. His first things he sold after his personal junk was going to junk yards and taking off car parts and selling them on ebay. In a short time he learned what sold and what brought top dollar and it evolved from there. There is no end to what you can do with ebay and how much money you can make. Like I said, I am mystified some of the things people say. Here is something really amazing that is handed to them on a platter and they can't recognize it. I guess that is just the difference between people and why some have a lot and many have nothing.

probably easier with high ticket items nearly everyone must own. I tried with $50-$100 hobby items and or collectibles and lost money on most transactions. I have $7k left in inventory that i dont even try with anymore. Im rooting for inflation as we speak.

My father, who came to this country with nothing and ended up owning office buildings used to tell me, it doesn't matter how many times you fail, you only have to be successful once. Maybe you need to just try something else. You know what is funny, that story I told about my nephew selling used parts on ebay. You can go right out and do that today. About a year ago had my favorite car a 1993 Volvo 240 get wrecked. I was sick about it. It was not insured because of it's age and I figured it was a total loss.

We parked it on the back of the property and took it apart. I managed to sell just about everything but the frame, from the visors to the engine on ebay. When we were done I got almost the full value of the car even if it had not been in a wreck and running. A car like that you can take salvage on for maybe $500.00 and end up with $4000.00 in parts.. Insurance companies sell them all the time. That particular car is a very popular car and people who own them love them and want to keep them running. The parts are pretty valuable. That is what I meant in my other post when I said you need to know what will sell. Any kid can go to the junk yard today and find parts they can sell on line.

That is just one example of what can be done.
I would not let your one bad experience stop you from trying something else. It is usually best if you try to stick to something you know, like many on here sell billiard related stuff because that is their interest. I an sorry if I sometimes come off like I am a motivational speaker I can't help it.

Never sold anything, but have bought several things off e bay. It's a simple process. My take on these issues is "you can't fix stupid" in many cases.

I have always gotten exactly what was described and been very happy. I have done the buy it now and bids both. If a person can't understand what is going on as a buyer, again, you can't fix stupid......and I'm not the sharpest knife in the block.

My original post wasn't about the value of ebay. I do know what owning a storefront is like as I have had two restaurants and a computer store.....yes, you are right, it is a nightmare sometimes. The cost involved in ebay is so small when you look at the traffic you get. My complaint is the way people use it. There are a lot of posts here about "move on" "it is part of business" and so on. I understand that, but it still doesn't stop a person from getting frustrated when they have to hold on to something waiting to find out someone isn't going to pay. I understand that this is part of online, or for that matter, any business as there will always be people who change their mind or return a product. This post was more about "do people understand eBay and what the buy it now means?" When you have someone griping at you because you sent them an invoice, it is hard not to have the normal human emotion of frustration. I didn't mean for what I said to be taken out of context. Ebay has its place, and it is way cheaper than a store front, but there is always room for improvement in everything and I think some good points have been brought up in this thread.

The problem was, sellers held the buyers hostage with the threat of neg.

I've been in several "discussions" about this. I've seen people furious because they didn't get positive feedback as soon as they paid for the item. Our policy had always been that the seller's part of the transaction isn't over until they inform us that they have the item and are satisfied with it. If they are not satisfied we do our best to make it right. Then we are only too happy to leave positive feedback first, then the buyer can leave feedback for us. Ok, the "discussions" were mostly arguments:p

Well, ebay has a gazillion users, but when is the last time anyone got a gazillion bids on a pool cue?

And how often do people list cues on ebay for 7 or 10 days, and never even get a bid? The item is tied up for the entire auction process, the fees are absolute whether it sold or not, and the seller now still has his cue and is more upside down in it.

An auction anywhere, at a good price will attract pool players that are interested in bidding,,,,,,if you advertise the auction where the poolplayers congrigate.

I feel no need to donate a percentage of my money to ebay.

All true,,,,,,it is a good place to buy some stuff, DYOD,,,,,,the seller gets killed though with all the risks and all the fees.

That is one of my points. If it is stupid, or just a mistake, it doesn't matter. I think my biggest problem is when a buyer doesn't pay they rarely, if ever, respond to your emails. If you made a mistake, own up to it. Most sellers will understand....but to just ignore it is very poor character. Years ago, I bid $99.00 on an item I meant to bid $.99 on. I freaked out, contacted the seller, and they simply said "fine, just retract the bid." Communication is golden. Don't hide from the problem, own up to it.

These are the very people who have screwed eBay up in the first place. Honest business men who pay their tax's can't afford to sell on ebay because of the free loaders who sell items $1 above wholesale and never pay any tax.

I hope they are scared and they should be because the IRS is certainly watching and sooner or later they will get that letter that explains that they are being audited. You just never know who you are dealing with or what other motives they have regarding what you are selling.

Sleep tight!!!! Because the next knock at your door may be the men in Black holding a brief case and a calculator!!!!;)

Very funny! Old retired people screwed up ebay.

I think it is the people who lie about items in their

descriptions screw up ebay. And some of the same

people are right here on azbilliards.

So the older people are to blame for all the fees too?

Lemme see here,
1. Ebay is a business
2. The goal of a business is to maximize profit
3. using Ebay is voluntary
4. WHATINELL ARE YOU GUYS *****ING ABOUT??
