Another newbie question:

I find that I'm more comfortable (and more successful) striking the right side of the object ball rather than the left side. Maybe because I'm right-handed?

I suspect (and hope) that the right-side preference will fade away as I get more confident with shot-making in general.

When you were developing as a player, did you favor one side of the ball more than the other?

to favor the right side on all shots is surprising
since that means you are equally comfortable with inside and outside english depending on the cut of the shot
most less skilled players favor outside to inside english regardless if its on the right or left side

I agree about the dominant eye. U have to find out how YOU SEE the shot correctly. Stick under your dominant eye or centered between the eyes. I would also suggest U shoot a ton of the bad side shots til U see & make them & then shoot a ton more of them. Good Luck in working thru it. To answer your question, I think I may have favored cutting the oblect ball to the left at first but I think it was more of a comfort thing in reaching over the table as I was 13 years old. Again good luck in working thru it.
 
I honestly never thought about it. I just shot the side I thought I could get shape.

The OP's question is a bit confusing, but I think he's asking whether striking the left side of the cue ball is more comfortable for the shooter than striking the right side, and vice versa.
My answer would be neither. Any player worth his salt should be as comfortable striking whitey on one side as he (or she) would be on the other. :smile:

I think you're right. He may have mistakenly said which side of "object ball". Hope he clears this up.

If we're right, and he meant the cue ball, then I tend to agree with the idea of eye alignment.

But I think there's something else at play here which may have to do with how our brains work (left or right dominant). When I began playing 3-cushion in 1962, I discovered that striking the left side of the CB somehow felt more natural than the right side. I determined this by breaking off both sides of the OB and seeing which felt better. (For those not familiar with 3-C, you use inside english on the CB for the break shot, going either to the right long rail or the left long rail.)

As you stated, I think it shouldn't matter to a high level player. I'd be interested in other thoughts on this. Do you AZers have a preferred side of the CB to apply spin?

I think both (preferring one cut direction or one spin direction) are common problems, even with more experienced players.

If this is about cut direction (not spin direction), then I agree with others that it's most likely an eye position problem.

If it's about spin direction, then I dunno.

Yes, its common. Its why some people favor shooting a spot shot to the left pocket.
 
My apologies for any confusion. I meant striking the object ball on its right side, i.e. not the right side of the cue ball (since I'm not really using any English yet...let's cross that bridge when we come to it :smile:)

It's just as though I see the line of the shot better when the OB needs to be struck on its right side than the left.

I suspect that those of you who mentioned dominant eye alignment are on the right track. I'm working on that, but eye-back-neck problems make it a little more difficult than it should be. I won't bore you with the details but suffice to say I'm not 25 years old any more and I've put some hard miles on this body.

Its very slight but I do favor cutting to the left on some shots.I am right handed right eye dominant.English doesnt factor in for me.I noticed it while playing 1 pocket and cutting balls in that are close to the foot rail and close to my opponents pocket.
 
I also favor the right side of the ball, whether it's outside or inside English. I'm not sure why though.
 
I think it's like a right-handed pitcher preferring to pitch to a right-handed batter. With a right-handed batter, the pitcher can deliver the pitch to either side of plate. But it's harder to get the ball tight-inside on a left-handed batter.
 
You're prob left eye dom when playing if you prefer left cuts.

JoeT's third eye will help show this as well. Even if an eye dom test shows your right eye is the dom, the eye that helps identify CB the most is likely the direction of your preferred cuts.

It's almost a given if you cut the balls better to the left you are left eye dominant.

Every player on the planet that is left eye dominant has trouble cutting to the right. If you get down and really study the 2 shots you will see that the cut to the right is even a little harder to envision.

This is what I fix.
