Do you get angry when you lose?

Hi all

Yesterday I went to my local pool hall and I played with one of the best players here, we played 2 sets race to 7 and it wasnt about money or anything just for fun. So, I totally destroyed him, after the last game he threw his cue onto the table like hell(Something I would never do) making terrible noise and everyone was staring at us. Then he unscrewed his cue really fast and left almost running..

The pool hall has two areas, one is the pool area and then there is a bar area you have to go through a glass door to the bar area, then i saw him through that door explaining to another guy why he lost:p

I know this guy for many years already, when I was kid we used to play, of course he always won against me, then I quit playing because of family problems and then I lived in Japan for a while.. So now Im back here and I have been training really hard and the result is that no one cant beat me here anymore..

I can understand that it might be not so nice to lose against someone whos much younger(im 21) but theres no need to get so angry right? I would never behave like he did.. Its just a game, if I lose then I get angry but I dont bother other people with that;)

Whats your opinion on this?

People like your friend that behave the way they do after a loss need to mature up. Every pool game is going to have a winner and a loser, there is no getting around it. If you cant handle the process of losing with dignity then perhaps you shouldnt be playing at all. Afterall, in my book the experience of losing offers a greater opportunity to learn and improve from then from winning. Winning can be great and fun, and provides a confirmation of one's level of playing and skill set. But eventually we also all have to lose too. And when we do, we should use the experience to learn from, and to also learn to behave with as much dignity as when we win. Its been my experience in playing over 30 years that there are more amateurs (and a few pros) that need to learn to improve on their ability to lose with dignity than there are that do know how to do so properly.

No one likes to lose but as the previous poster said...be cool about it. I try to be. We were playing a local community at our clubhouse and a guy tosses his stick onto the table after missing a shot. I told him (and everyone in the room) never do that and your game will be an instant lose and the match will end on the spot. No need to damage someone's property.

It is completely normal to be unhappy, even angry about losing. However losing is a part of competing. In heads up play somebody has to lose every time. In tournament play it is even worse, everybody but one person loses, even they may well lose a set in the typical double elimination tourneys. An unreasonable degree of anger or not bringing it quickly under control is an almost sure fire recipe for a repeat performance in your next match.

I doubt any of us have not been guilty of unacceptable behavior after a particularly tough loss when our head was in the wrong place. Behaving like a lady or gentleman when one loses, angry or not, is the only acceptable behavior. People who act out are almost always trying to indicate that this is a highly unusual event for them. Those that make a habit of poor behavior are only kidding themselves. Nobody else is buying their act.

He was probrably angry at himself and not you. It is not mature behaviour for sure, but look at the golfers. lol. Some folks just can't shake hands and congratulate you for beating them. I would not take it personal unless he made it that way.

I used to be inconsolable after losing a league match or tournament. It took a lot of work but now I'm over it in minutes. Reading the pleasure in small movements changed my thought process. I make a hell of a lot of balls and I win a lot of games but ya know sometimes your just gonna miss....sometimes your gonna lose. If I feel that I did my pre shot routine. Made a good decision and my stroke was smooth and I stayed down through the shit then I'm satisfied I gave it my best effort and I move on. Believe me it took a lot of work to get that far lol

typo or truth?

This is why I lose games on purpose and make the matches close. I like to keep my friends and don't like to see people get mad.

But if I don't know you and it's a tournament, it's on.

To answer your first question, no, I do not get angry when I lose. My only goal when I compete is to shoot up to my capabilities. If I do that and lose, then I've done ALL that I can do. If I do not shoot up to my capabilities and lose, then I am DISAPPOINTED, but not angry.

Peoples competitive spirit determines how they will react after losing. The higher their will/desire is to WIN, the greater degree of angst they will have after losing, whether it shows outwardly or not.

More people should try playing "games" for fun! It's a heck-of-a-lot less stressful.

I DESPISE losing. That being said, I don't throw my cue around when i do lose. I occasionally just sulk inwardly.:p That lasts for about 10 minutes at most and then I am looking for an opportunity to correct any mistakes that I made. :D

Your "friend" may have been bragging to someone about how he used to whip your butt, back in the day before he played you (or had thought about it in his mind) and your sound thrashing of him was just too much for him to bear. That's the way it is; someday you're the bug and somedays you're the windshield.

j/k

Oh yeah, Rin. You're 21 you say.... hmmmmm. Did you wildly grin at him after your victory? :D That could set him off.

I think it's normal to be upset when you lose, maybe even good, but it's not ok to be rude. To often those things go hand in hand.

Yeah:D Well we were having fun, the atmosphere was nice, until he realized that he lost again.. I was about to ask "You want more?" but then I noticed how fast he was unscrewing his cue haha

And we werent alone, 6 or 7 guys were watching our match lol

Did you ever think that he may be setting you up for a big score later?
