do you play with your expensive cues or just collect them and play with mid range cue

I play with the ugliest and cheapest Meucci butt made.
No points or inlays.

I never have to worry about someone stealing it.

Some of my good cues----haven't seen them in years.

My daily player is a Jeff Olney 6 point. Probably fetch around 700 in its current state. My ball banger is a Olney pj with same type tip. I own cues ranging in prices of 200 to 2500 but there's just something about Jeff s cues.

I play with my Lambros every day; practice, league etc... once in a while pick up the Josey and Diviney and play around with those but mainly its the Lambros.

Cues

My first custom was a Gus that he built for me I shot with it as my only cue for 18 yrs, than got a wife that i quit pool for and sold it. Since than I have owned Schick, Searing, Barry, Kikel,Bender,John Bender,Farris,Hercek,Gina, wish I still had them all but when I did have them I played them. I currently have the Hercek and an Olney. I take the Olney with me to work I work oilfield and fly to work for two weeks at a time but when home I play the Hercek. Just a word here for those interested all of these cues played well and as far as i was concerned were flawless. Most were fairly expensive and you'd expect them to play well. I will put in a word for John Benders cues they are reasonably priced and I had two cues made by him and they play they don't play better than the others but do play as well as most of them and at half the price.

I have a 6 point mike lambros sitting in a case I never use because my predator road line to me plays lights out!

My player is a Predator sneaky. Everything else is on the wall for display. My cues run from $150- $2000. Play with the cue you shoot best with. The cue in my Ava is my most expensive and collectible. Had it since 1965. I don't like it as a player or I would use it.

I play with a Lambros Merry Widow but it has special shafts. I just went back to it after playing with 2 different southwests and a searing. So i guess my recent playing cues range from $1500-4000. I am in the process of having ed young make me another cue that I hope will be my new player. OTOH I a am having another very top tier cue maker make me a cue that will probably never be chalked. The only limptmus test I have for not playing with a cue is if I received it new and it is a collectible then I may keep it that way.

I can see both points of view. My two nice cues were both under $600.00 and I bought them to play with. I'm out of your guys' league when it comes to spending thousands of dollars on a cue. My McDermott G603 (my best cue) took six months to pay off while it was on layaway. I can't justify to my wife spending so much on a cue. My own table only cost $800!!

I can see where buying an investment cue would be smart, I can't roll that way. It's nice to read the comments though! I'm sure an unplayed custom cue would fetch big buck down the line. Besides, some of you buy them just to admire them. It's your cash, do as you see fit! They are works of art....

I started buying different cues looking for different hits, but now I have over 50 and still only play serious with my early 80's Joss I bought new and a Schon Runde R-10 I bought recently. I have a fancy It's George with matching case that is my favorite but it is brand new, they are only new once, bummer.

Last offer I had on my player was 4500

Buy em and play with them. That's what they're made for.

And if it doesn't play well for you sell it to a guy who'll put it in a cabinet to stare at

I'll break down and get a ridiculous hand-made cue eventually, but it'll still have a Predator or OB shaft, so it's only for looks. I live in the same town as Kenny Murrell and Rob Harris, so that's probably the way I'd go. For now, I've got my early 80's Joss with a 314-2, and I love it.

I don't have anything expensive but if I did I would play with it.

I look at it like a watch, not much use sitting in a drawer but at the same time I wouldn't wear my Rolex to a grungy bar.

I've had people dump a rack of balls on my table that already had balls and cues on it while I had a sip of water sitting in front of the table.

I've had people pass by me with their cue in hand without me moving and whack my cue.

These are factors for me owning expensive things. I would spend a couple grand on a cue, given these issues I probably wouldn't buy a Gus unless I broke it down put it back in my case and put it behind the bar at the pool hall whenever I didn't want it in my hands.

I'm just curious because I use a predator sneaky pete but am looking at 700 to 1200 price range sticks and wondering if thats a normal player or do you guys just store them after a certain amount.

I have a fancy eight-point Gina and a plain five-point Gina and play with both. My only concession to "collect-ability" is that besides the original two shafts I use for the eight-pointer I have two un-hit shafts for it in the closet :-)

This is the reason that I bought two Fossil watches. I call them "Bourbon Street Watches," because I'm not wearing my Bulova's or Seiko's when I'm in the French Quarter.

There are a few guys that show up to the APA league nights with $1,000+ cues and they only play in the APA. Most have never played on a 9ft table in their life, but they enjoy a fancy cue.

Even if I had cash to burn, I wouldn't be wearing a Rolex and playing with a Ginacue in the grunge bar; It attracts too much attention.

Yes, you don't bring excessive cash or rolex to the grunge. I wold take my less expensive watches (citizen egodrives, bulova, panerai) still too much attention, didn't want to own a timex so I just didn't have a watch.

I find it funny actually, usually I think yeah whatever, I've never been robbed before but I bet a lot of times the scum of the earth didn't know what I had on my wrist or in my pocket.

Why does it matter what format you play to enjoy a nice cue?

This is why I love sneaky petes.

I feel like everyone should have at least one sneaky pete.

Two, really. A true sneaky and a "nicer" sneaky.

Hell, I'm gonna get around to buying a Schmelke sneaky to leave in my car one day. I keep talking about it, but never get around to it. Can't go wrong with a $100 full splice for a true beater.

I saw some with an old growth shaft wood to wood and pretty house cue look for a decent price, that sounds enticing. I personally have 2 pred SPs, one is /w a wrap and both have the steel joints so they're not incredibly sneaky lol.
