Do you stay the whole league night if you're done playing ??

How soon do you leave after your league match ??

Just to throw in a curve ball here, I play on a UK 8 ball team and want to know your thoughts on this.

What are your opinions if a player (or several) don't actually leave the venue until the end of the team match, but turn up, play their game and spend the rest of the night either on a fruit machine, singing karaoke, or even outside the bar smoking?

This happens a lot on the team I'm playing on, where a few will simply play their game and then head off to another area of the pub, and pay no attention to the match going on in the pool room.

On our home league nights the opposition team all stay in the pool room to watch the match, am I being a bit too harsh suggesting that our team does the same instead of paying no attention and going off on their own until the end of the match?

In all fairness I thought that team games were all about supporting the team you play for!!

*EDIT* I also forgot to mention, it's not just after their games, it can be that they don't actually come into the pool room until someone else has to go out and tell them it's time for their game to be played.

That's virtually the same as leaving.

Where we play, there is always at least one other match going on besides ours, and in one place there can be up to six matches going on. We all know one another, so its natural to want to see what else is going on.

I don't mind a player wandering around, checking out other matches, or just visiting with folks a little. So long as they come back and are with the team, too. It's supposed to be fun, and so long as there are other team members around, having one or two wandering around for a short while (going for a drink or a smoke, too) isn't a big deal.

Doesn't sound like that is the case for you.

Threads like these make me appreciate my league, and especially my teams so much more.

It would be nice if leagues could begin around 6 or 6:30 pm, start on time and be finished by 9 or 10 pm. It seems far too many start at 7:30 or 8pm and finish between midnight and 2 am. I believe that's why many players leave after their match. Just my opinion on this.

I wish our league matches were that long!!
Typically, over here a league match will start at 8pm and be between 7 and 10 singles games, rarely finishes after 10pm, and the league with 7 games, matches are normally finished by 9.15 at the latest!

There is something to this. The flip side, of course, is being able to get home from work, changing, getting something to eat...

One league I play in starts at 7, and we're usually done by 11. Sometimes 10:30.

The other starts at 6:30, and is done by 10-10:30.

We do start a second table 2 hours after start time, and often earlier than that.

Whether I stay or not depends on if or when I play during the night and what I have going on the next morning.

I guess I don't fully understand the concept of playing on a team, but only attending your own match?

Cause it's just not that big a deal ?

:)

Would you show up/stay if you knew you were not going to play that night ?

Not me.

Well, on APA and every other league I am generally there the whole night. But on the APA team where I am a co-captain, I got a couple guys that always demand to play 1st and 2nd every week and then they leave. That's one of many reasons I am going to a new team next session. I am not the actual captain, so I've had to put up with them.

Why the hell would I join a team and then leave it when its still playing?

I've played leagues for over 30 years and can count on one hand the times I've left early. In fact, I can't think of ONE time I've left early.

If I didn't want to do the team thing, I wouldn't. But I do, so I do that.

^^^ THIS ^^^

... is pretty much where I come out. League typically gets done around 11:00 or so. And the only two times I can remember myself leaving early is 1) When my wife was going in for surgery early the next morning, and 2) When I had to carpool with two other salespeople at 3:00 the next morning for a road trip six hours away...

But I honestly cannot grasp the concept of leaving as SOON as your game is done.

On a side note, Jeff (and without turning this thread into an NPR/Main Forum portal), the kid that continually bails after his last game is a vocal supporter of the same party that claims to want to "take care of each other"

How's that work ??

I could not agree more! It really bothers me when my teammates leave before the last game has been played. I hate hearing the excuse "I gotta get up early". We all gotta get up early! The poor bastard who plays last gotta get up early too, but he stays and plays in the last slot because that's what the team needed that night & the team should be there as a team until the end. Nothing sucks more than keeping your own score because you are the only one on your team left, playing an opponent who's whole team is cheering him on.

There's a guy on my current team that's the same way. "I gotta work in the morning". Yeah, no $h!t, so do the rest of us. Hell, I played the first half of the night a few weeks ago, and stayed until the end.

What gets me is that some of the other guys on our team live about 25-30 miles away, and this kid that bails early lives the second closest to most of the places we play (traveling league).

So the team captain finally wised up, and plays that kid last now :grin-square:

See, to me that demanding thing is BS. You play where you're needed.

Props to you for switching teams.

I always stick around for the whole league to just help out. Time outs (I am the high rank player on my team) Keep score, make sure packets are complete properly, etc. Another reason to stick around is that our places allows league palyers free play all night. I wait around for the gamblers and serious players to show up. I am always trying to play my level or or better to improve. When I look around after hours, the league straglers are either high ranking players or ones that will be.

I always stay to the end.
League is a team sport played by individuals.
Everyone likes to have the team watching, especially if you're playing well right?

I pretty much agree with this. I am always there early so I can get a game or two of warm up in. Most all places we rotate around do not have any extra tables to play on during the matches so I'm there with my team watching every shot pretty much. Our matches will rarely be over before 1AM, and I must get up at 5:30 for work every morning. If I can go with 4 hours sleep one day a week I think everyone else can most of the time. I dont ever say anything, but I wish people would not leave early.

It must sound nuts, but sure! I almost never can play because we can't make numbers. I must have barely shot 6 times this season. But I show up every thursday anyway and watch, and occasionally score and coach.

For me, league night's fun. I look forward to it. What else am I gonna do on a thursday night? Sit at home playing pet the weasel and eating cheetos?

For "us" , it has to be fun. It's hard enough sometimes just to get good reliable players. As I said earlier, as long as you show up to play and put forth reasonable effort then anything else is a bonus. I don't expect anyone to stick around when their heart isn't into it and the same goes for me. Sometimes I do and when I'm not feeling it , I make sure everything is cool and I jet. It's just not that big a deal to me. I know everyone else in the league so it's not like your sitting there alone or anything. If they WERE there , my team would be off playing somewhere anyways. It's not like the whole team is ever going to be sitting there all lined up on the rails cheering. :)

Not to go down that road but I , and most that I know , literally hate leagues. They're basically pointless in terms of competition , offer little or nothing to gain (you almost always put in more than you get back) and is more about being a social gathering/meeting than any level of true competition.

Now I'm sure I'm going to flamed to death for that ;) so fire away but it's not meant to be judgemental or an insult I promise. Nothing at all against anyone who enjoys it or if that's your only outlet to scratch a competitive itch....or even just to throw down beers with buds. I have no vendetta against leagues or league people , just stating my personal feelings.

Now's the part where I get ripped for playing league. :) ....

So.....for "Me"..... Playing league gets us all daily practice time at the local room. That's it , simple. We've started a player owned in house league , with minimal costs and all proceeds returned to the players. Each session basically returns all/most payed in funds and covers the house fees that provides our weekly practice time allowance. You get a tad of light hearted match ups and you go on your way.

When I did the APA and others, it's was pretty much the same deal except it cost alot more and you got back alot less. The couple of times I got to Vegas....well lets just say I'd MUCH rather pay my own way for the accommodations I would much prefer. :) At least the patches are nice. :grin-square:

Anyways....

I guess what I'm saying and to the point of the OP is it's just not worth getting all fired up over it. People are going to be people , don't sweat it.

i have always stayed until the matches are over. we get free table time after league so sometimes several of us stay till closing time. hell to get up the next morning though.

here lately i have been leaving a lil early sometimes on my tue nighttravel team. mostly when i have to ride my bike cause the old lady needs the car for something or another.

i had rather go home at 10 clock when its 50 degrees than 11 clock when its 40 degrees. its colder than a well diggers ass going down the interstate 70 mph on a bike when its 40 degrees.:frown:
