That your a pool player? I'm careful for many reasons. Ever have that feelin'?

I tell people I'm a pool player whenever the subject comes up. The reaction depends on who I'm talking to.

Some get that look that says all they know of pool is from the movies and hearsay, in other words, mostly the bad stuff. I try to explain the positive impact pool playing has had on my life, the challenge involved and the degree of effort that truly is needed to play pool very well.

Some get all froggy and want to "play some" cause they play in the local bar one night a week. After a game or two they realize that my playing pool is a whole different level of game then then theirs. Its really funny at times.

Then there are the ones that really say nothing, other then "maybe we should play some time." These are the ones to watch out for. These types I do not trust. Mostly cause this is the same reply I give when someone mentioned they play pool to me.

My friends and coworkers know... If Im at a bar or whatever and put quarters up I generally just keep my mouth shut. They'll figure it out eventually.

this is what happens to me ALL the time. it is funny, they say things like "you should be on TV" or things similar, they cant believe that someone can be that much better than them even though they are just casual shooters.

Not making my living playing pool yes, I have told "them" in a job interview.

I have been in sales for many years, so from time to time, if it feels right, I tell them about my pool & billiard background and explain that I love the creativity & problem solving aspect of 3-cushion & 1-pocket and that's why I gravitate to those two games. I continue to tie that into how I enjoy the creativity & problem solving needed during the sales process and that may be one of the reasons I have been successful.

If nothing else I get remembered. :)

Mine neighbor plays occasionally, could be a very good player if his wife didn't object to his coming out to a billiard club. She thinks that pool players and establishments are full of corrupt and demoralizing people. Pool halls still carry a bad stigma for many people so, I do not tell those that do not play.

Good thread.

At my office or with a client, I never mentioned it unless it someone else offered that they play pool. Pool has a well-deserved and almost perpetually reinforced seedy image, and whether fair or not, the truth is that many frown on the pool scene and its participants. Still others are intrigued by the pool scene, but are convinced that it consists chiefly of hustlers who prey on each other. Far too few see pool for what it is -- a perfectly reasonable and enjoyable hobby.

When I am out socially, I often mention that I love to play pool, but that's a diferent situation.

For me, whether I mentioned that I play pool always came down to the people I was around at the time.

I do tell "them". I also tell them that liking to play doesn't mean that I am any good at it.

Me too. Luckily, I'm an old retired curmudgeon. That means no real harm to me if somebody doesn't approve that my favored recreation is pool.

I have two responses depending on who I'm talking to. It's either:

A.) I play 'pocket billiards', or B.) I shoot pool.

I'm happy to tell people. How else will I run into others who are interested in pool if I don't mention it. My character is easily revealed in my actions, so I have no worries that others will judge me based on the fact that I enjoy pool.

If it's a social situation I most likely will tell them.... If it's work related it's the last thing that ever comes up and then only after I have had a long term relationship with the client......

Too many times you get the look from whoever you tell that says they are currently reassessing their opinion and trust in you.... Image is everything and until pool cleans theirs up I think it will have to be this way... At least for me as an accountant and consultant......

Do I tell them

If I am not at the table or NOT going to be at one real soon: Yes

If I am at the table or GOING to be at one real soon: No

Back when I was starting playing, I told a company in northern Cal that pool was my hobby. I had only been playing for a few months and only during the day with the old timers in the pool hall in Phoenix. I was naive. I did not see any stigma or realize there was one (until I started going to the hall a lot more at night ) After the interview, I asked if there were any pool halls in the area. Rookie mistake on my part. Didn't get the job even though they flew me there for an interview. Now I know better. If asked about my hobbies, I like to cook and read and play with my kids.

Thanks for the .............:groucho::lmao::lmao::lmao:
But what's even sadder, they don't believe you, and then if they do see you and you do make a good shot, you loose both ways, and they think your a sleaze bag hustlin' liar (well maybe not that bad ;).
The social dynamics are soooooooo ''politicized'' you Never know how someone processes when you say......................................
''I'M A POOL PLAYER''

If the dictionary asked a million people their definition of a pool player, what do you think they would say, how would they describe us?
