It's Not About the Money
The few times I've placed in the small local tourneys, I've tipped. The TD's are normally workers from the room and I usually know them. A $10-20-30 tip isn't going to break the bank. Playing to 2 or 3 in the morning when you have to be in work at seven, it ain't about the money, well at least to me it's not

I have been the TD at a few small local tournaments on a volunteer basis. Rarely someone might give me a dollar or two or buy me a drink, but I never expected any tips from anyone.
I was running the tournament because I enjoy the game.
A tip does not have to be money... At the end of every single tournament, several of the players would usually thank me for running the tournament.
This made me feel good! (Especially since the TD always gets a lot of flak/complaints/etc. from a lot of players. They complain about what time the tournament starts, entry fee, rules, allotment of prize money, why they have to play so and so for their first match [blind draw], and on and on.)
So far as a TD (or anyone) hinting that they expect a tip, if anyone does this to me, they get NO tip period. It is greedy and tacky.
My suggestion: After you are done playing in a tournament, just thank the TD for running the tournament. This will be much appreciated.

I've ran a tournament or two and more times than not, people have given me a pool tip or two 
. Actually, the last tournament I ran one of the locals who didn't even cash in the tournament handed me $10 and told me that was for my tip jar for running the tournament so fast and smooth. I felt ackward about taking the $ but at the same time the thought was nice to

I do not think it is right to ask for tip in public. Tipping should be a private matter, and it should never be hinted or asked, in my opinion.
I was at a spa, and when it was time to pay, I was asked at the counter, in front of everyone, "so, how much would you like to tip?"
I was shocked, and I just said 15%. But I felt very awkward about it afterward.
I think most people would have tipped in this situation because it would be very embarassing to say no.
I have been thinking about it afterward. I just do not feel what they tried to do was right.

I am not doubting his integrity, but it could create some doubt, especially if he has asked the players to tip him.

First I've heard of it, but I've seen people whine when they didn't get a tip at a self serve coffee place, kinda wierd to think 'that' way if you ask me. I spent 14 1/2 years in the food and beverage industry working for tips, not hand outs.
As I came back to this thread, you point was in my thoughts. Pool players will look for reasons to complain about, you don't need to give them any more ammo, especially with the TD. The Viking tour ran into that a few years back with Janis, could of blown the whole deal out of the water.MFB said:

At the local handicapped tournaments here in South Florida, to win a tournament it often goes well past midnite...actually closer to 2-3AM. The TD at one tournament gets free pool time and free entry into the tournament. The TD at the other tournament gets nothing that I know of, its the owner and the bar staff that run it. To me neither TD at either tournament gets adequately compensated for the hassles of running a tournament. It is after all EVERY week, and they stay to the end EVERY time. They have to listen to people moan and complain about the handicap system EVERY week. After watching them do this for almost two decades, I can honestly say I have little patience for people who treat the TD like they are making some sort of killing running the tournament and thus deserve nothing, not even thanks, if they win the tournament.
If I manage to snap off one of these tournaments I always toss the TD something back, usually about 5%.
I will also add though that I compete at pool because I love the action and the competition. The money is a bonus but its not the reason why I am there. If I was playing to put food on the table for my kids I would likely not tip out but instead tell them thanks and let them know I appreciated them spending the time and effort to run the tournament.

Tipping is a personal issue
I tip when I get good service, I tip more when I get better service.
It's none of anyone's business who tips and how much.

I will say this...I would rather go to dinner with Nick Varner after he won one of my tournaments than have him tip me...meant so much more

I've run small weeklies off and on for about 10 years and I've only been offered a tip once, and that very recently. This probably reflects the fact that just about every place, including the popcorn counter at the movie theater I went to Saturday, now has a tip jar. In any case, I directed the tip (he offered $20 on a $150 pot, which was pretty sporty) to the bartender. I have accepted many beers from players over the years, though. But that seems different.

If this happens to me, I will most likely tip a bit, because a couple dollars is not worth the risk of being picked on and given a hard time in future tournaments, but it does not mean I endorse this action.
If this happens to me all the time, I will either quit, or talk to the room owner. I know I will be very uncomfortable about being asked to tip like this. Who knows, if I get to the money round, I may start thinking how much I need to tip the TD.
Talking to the TD may make it worst, so it is really a hard situation to handle.

tipping the bartender should be a given, but tipping the td at some of the local tourney's(KBP,or SE OPEN) is a joke, because they already take more than enough out of the prizefund! if you've been to one and added the numbers you understand! the Ladies Spirit Tour is the only honorable tour in the FL area!They have better payouts than the men's tourney's with half the players!(wish they would run a circuit for the men!)
