Do you wipe your tip off before putting it in case?

I don't wipe off my tips when I put my shafts away. I put them in my (Instroke) case with the tips facing up, and there doesn't appear to be any chalk coming off in my case. The tubes in my old case weren't big enough to do that, so I had to put the shafts in tip-side down, but I didn't wipe them off then, either. Figured I'd just clean the tubes one way or another if I found it to be a problem, and I never did.

What appalls me is people who spin their shafts tip-side down on the pool room carpet without giving it a thought. If I was a room owner, I'd warn them once if I saw them, then ban them if I saw them do it again. [Maybe these lugs think it's okay since chalk gets onto the carpet anyway when you chalk up, but that's a much different situation than grinding it in as you remove it from your tip.] It's such a discourteous thing to do that I would never do it.

I think it's good idea, but I don't do it. Maybe i'll start trying to remember to do this after reading this thread.

This Can't Be True

I always wipe my cuetip before putting my shaft tip down into my case. I seldom wipe my tip on the room's carpet, I prefer to wipe it on the table's cloth on the side rails.... I mean, the cloth has chalk on it already, so what's the harm ?
Doug
( one way or the other, it get's wiped down before going into the case )

spilled alcoholic beverages and cigarette ashes falling on the carpet and you guys think chalk is disrespectful? I"m not saying it's the right thing to do but if you're at someone's house, I can understand. But at a pool room where I"m sure someone has vommited, spit, dropped beverages, cigarette ashes, cigarette butts, gum, etc.......is chalk all that much worse?
I don't even clean my tips, but I was just wondering...:p

The way I see it; if I want a clean tip then it's my responsibliity to carry something with which to clean it and not damage someone else's property to satisfy my whim. How much trouble can it really be to carry a small rag?

Lol. Awww...that alright, buddy! "Sarcastic." :)

It probably is the players responsibility to have something with them instead of using the carpet. I tmay be a good idea though for the room owner to have small napkins, pieces of cloth, etc that are there specifically to wipe tips with. It would be a polite way of saying "please do not wipe tips on the carpet", and it would make the place look like a high class establishment. Thanks for the responses from everyone!! I will definately be wiping the tips of my cues.

Pride of ownership is the reason I do it.;) I try to keep my shaft clean and smooth as best I can. Chalk in the case sleeve/slot simply adds more chalk to the shaft.

I am building tip blocks for my room just for this purpose. :)

Good post......many people, myself included, never thought about the chalk on the carpet as a bad thing. When you are the one buying the carpet it becomes REAL.

Ray

I'm jumping ahead a page here, so please forgive if already posted. I was in a hall once where the owner had a 3x3 section of carpet with plywood backing hanging on the wall. Above it a sign reading: "Clean your tips here please". I thought it was cool. That said, count me among those who carry a small square of old T shirt material as a tip cleaner...

I just unscrew my tip and put it in a little baggie. :D

No, I don't see the sense in it.

My shaft rests tip-side down in my case, so no visible dirt in the case and somehow my shaft doesn't get dirty in the case.

So why should I ruin someones carpet or my towel I use to keep my hands dry or a quick clean of the shaft.

And if the shaft should get dirty, no problem it's a 314. Man, 200 Bucks and that ugly wood.

Never the less I play with grey chalk, so dirt isn't really visible

I just pray I get a Mezz real soon, maybe then I'll wipe the tip off

Wow, you guys are hardcore. I've played for 10 years with custom cues and I've found all I need is a good case that can fit the tip side facing up.

I can understand if you are playing with an "investment" custom cue (where the cue is about the moolah, not playing with it) wiping the tip, but otherwise a nicely blued shaft, plays smoother and slicker than any clean grain shaft. The questions then becomes, do you want to a smoother or 'cleaner' looking shaft.

I keep my eye a lot closer on players with blued shafts at my pool hall, than anyone with spanky clean one!

My 2 cents! :)

You just added one more reason to keep shafts clean!

I've been doing things backwards. I wipe my tip and bag my chalk. Guess I'll have to start bagging the tip!

Thanks, I laughed out loud.

How would they react if someone casually did the same to their carpet in their home?

I wipe my tips off on the carpet. In my own home and at any place else I happen to be. I don't have a problem with it in my home, I vacuum once a month. If I was at someone's home I would not do it, but would use a napkin.

HAH ! The joke's on you.
In my home we don't have any napkins OR carpets..... you have to lick your fingers clean.

Edited to add: Fortunately, we have toilet paper...

The carpet is dirty and greasy, what with dirty shoes, beer, cigarette smoke, and all that other gunk drifting down onto it. Wouldn't this put some of that crapola on your tip? And wouldn't this make the tip slicker?

Plus, if it ain't your carpet, you're polluting someone else's property and chalk damages carpet, big time.

Blast away,

Never had a problem in 20 years. The point is to make your tip slick and clean before putting it in your case.

hmmmmm
