anyone out there make ebony shafts. is that possible or would it be to stiff and heavy? can you make a shaft out of any hard wood. and what would it cost?

i don't know anyone that does it.it is possible but it would be extremely heavy, very stiff and probably warp.

yes it would also cost a lot.

I've seen it.

If you don't like maple, you need to get pool instructions.
Sorry.
Maple is a gift to us.

Alternative to ebony

Would you consider purpleheart dyed black to resemble ebony?

I'm making one now. I started it about 2 years ago. Not sure I'd make another, it's a waste of ebony, IMO.

Yes expensive, and doubt It's worth the money. I probably would have made one to try out by now, if not for the fact We use to have a cue with one on It. Too heavy and stiff IMO, and the tone did not feel good for a shaft. It was alright for breaking, If Your not a speed break kind of person, and like the weight to do the work, but as a player shaft not too impressive to me. Everyone is different though so who knows.

Brunswick And other old time manufacturers used to make shafts with ebony spliced to the nd of the shaft and as I recall, they played fine but the cues were typically heavy, 20+oz to offset the weoght of the ebony.

As far as making one entirely from ebony, it would weigh between 7 and 10 ounces and wouldn't play as well as maple. I've built purple heart, piquia amarello, ash, and birch, and cherry shafts over the years and nothing came close to maple.
