Does everybody use a wrap?

I'm starting to shop around for a cue, and have seen a number of cues on the market that are wrapless. Personally, I have no problem with it. Are there many top players out there that use wrapless cues? Just wondering.

It is just a personal preference and does not affect how a cue is going to play. I believe Corey Deuel plays with a wrapless cue and I am sure there are other top players that also do. Cliff Joyner plays with a Meucci normally, and those are usually wrapless.

I can't make a ball with a wrapped cue!

Mike Davis is another top Player who uses wrapless.

I have seen many a pro, men and women, play with a wrapless cue. Please don't ask me to name them though. I would think (from my observations) that as compared to the average pool player, the pros use a wrapless or leather-wrapped butt more often than a linen-wrapped butt.

I myself have a Jacoby "Hustler" cue that is wrapless. I like it a lot. It is my main player that is in my "drunk case"*.

* "Drunk case"= the cues that I take with me on a night when I know I may be drinking more than usual (in case I get so drunk that I leave and forget my cues :o). I also take these cues to tournaments where I know that I'm not going to know anyone there (so when I go to the restroom and somebody "walks" with my cues :( I won't lose all my good ones). I only take my good stuff when I'm going to stay sober (which is most of the time) or there is someone I can trust to watch my cues/case when I'm in the restroom. Kinda paranoid, huh???

Ralf Souquet's wrapless custom Joss

Ralf Souquet is another pro that prefers a wrapless cue. His custom Joss (very striking in appearance, see a close-up here) was designed -- as is most high-end wrapless cues -- to show-off the cue maker's art. Many think that a wrap on a cue is an excuse for the cue maker to "hide" a bad or unattractive piece of wood. YOMV ("your opinion may vary")

Jeanette Lee had/has a Mosconi (Jacoby) cue which is wrapless.
Efren Reyes also played a few years with a wrapless cue.

If your hands sweat a lot then you might want to go with linen.
I love leather wraps but can't go near them when it's hot and humid... in competition I would almost always use a linen wraped cue.
With wrapless cues I need to use a towel more often.

I'm just making this comment for rep points.

Not everyone uses a wrap. But you should always use a wrap :D

I like both. My current playing cue is a Pete Ohmen with no wrap. My other Omen cue has a linen wrap.
I like both.

Guys like me who have a abnormally long reach & grab the base of the butt use wrapless. Even with a 30" shaft to get a 10+ inch address on my bridge hand too. That is well beyond the wrap and at that point the wrap is merely cosmetic. I personally play with (and have for years) a wrapless cue. And personally the look has grown on me. Now all I like is the wrapless look. And there are a few where they could utilize the wrap if it were there but just prefer the wrapless look.

IMO

I used too have one of those...back when I played a lot of bar box pool.

i have one of each and i prefer the cue with the wrap. Love how Shanes new cue has the wrap all the way to the end of the cue.

I prefer no wrap. My hand does not feel as secure on a linen wrap. I feel like I'm going to fling the cue across the room like a spear.

Welcome to AZ!!

In my opiniion it doesn't really matter what the top players like. What matters is what feels good to you. I prefer the wrapless but a stacked leather wrap feels almost as good. I don't care for the linen or regular leather wrap.

Why not just mail me the Jacoby and I'll save you the swarm of bad feelings you're gonna have when it gts stolen!

Ahhh.... great point!

I did not like a linen wrap and went with leather for over ten years. In February I got a new wrapless cue (Jim Buss) and I have found I love the wrapless more than the leather.

My hands don't remain dry and the wrapless nor leather wraps have ever been a problem for me. If anything, I think linen is more difficult to use if one sweats.

Good luck, Ruark!
