The answer is no. Score is irrelevant. If playing safe and going for ball in hand will make your run out easy, then that is the right shot....no matter what the score or situation. If the
safe is tough to accomplish, then go for the shot. That is the point of this thread. When you say shot choice, there is only 2 choices when playing pool, offense or defense. Shooting or playing safe is the point of the thread.

When you break the game down -- every shot you either play safe or shoot. Unless I'm reading them wrong they are implying that this play safe or shoot decision shouldn't change based on the score.

I pretty much agree with them.

It's not against the forum rules to let a thread breath a little.

I'm not implying anything when I write a reply. I try to be precise with my words. I'm not talking about "breaking the game down" or taking into account the psychological aspect of the game. There are many options other than playing safe or shooting but I guess most here are 8 or 9 Ball players and most probably play on bar tables in leagues.

By the time everyone's done telling us how they play Uncle Bill on the bartable in his basement and what they would do playing a drunk in a bar this thread will be completely useless. It's a shame because you had a great idea to start it.

As far as "letting the thread breathe", you are the one who asked the question in your title.

You have sparked my curiosity. In simple terms, there is just offense and defense. What other options are there, other then the gray area of a 2 way shot?

Rotation games:

Should I shoot a thin cut in the corner on the game ball?, or attempt a bank shot.

Should I kick, or try a jump shot?

Should I push?, or try a shot (offense), or a safe (defense)

There are so many If/then situations that this could apply to.

It was not mentioned that the question only applied to playing on a 9 ft Diamond table with worn cloth in central Chicago during an evening in June with no air conditioning and loud rock music playing and barely clothed waitresses walking around, now did you? :wink::

The score usually dictates my shot, but not nearly as much as the money. Unless I'm wearing my pool shoes and wielding a cue that hits a ton.
