Done with eight ball

I have run into the exact scenario the OP is feeling, at least the random rules and inferior opponents. Something that really inspired me was a combination of wanting to torture the local folk by holding the table for as long as I could and wanting to help these "bangers" understand the game and improve their own skill.

I would measure my improvement by how long I could hold the table. Some times someone would want to play for $5 or for drinks and it would turn out to be a financially enjoyable evening but that was never the goal. The goal was getting out enjoying the game and the company of other people enjoying the game as well. Not many of people actively go out to enjoy pool so I try to embrace everyone who finds the game interesting.

8-ball is an equalizing game of course. Pool is about execution, and the only competitor we truly have is our self. As it has been stated earlier, letting others pay for practice is great! One of the most rewarding aspects of pool is actually showing the players who have some form of ambition some fundamentals so they can eventually become a worthy foe. You will be surprised the bond that can develop between "student" and "coach". They will always respect you and appreciate the enhanced joy they have by being a “better player”

I will never forget walking into bars when I first turned 21 and not knowing anyone, and then putting my quarters on the table and promptly running the table all night. Since I had been exposed to the game at 9 yrs old I was pretty likely the best player in any bar I walked into for miles around. Since the stronger players all drove to the city half an hour away.

I have made many a great companion with my pool connections. All of my best friends, my fiance, all from pool either directly or indirectly. The social impact of this game has influenced my life much more than the enjoyment from any satisfaction that occurred directly from the white sphere!

My suggestion is if you are in fact a “C” player, and you want to improve your skill, grab a few books if you don’t already have them, 99 critical shots, the 8 ball bible, and the pleasure of small motions. Reading these books took me from a “C” player to a strong “B”. They will help your practice feel organized and more efficient so when you have opponents, you won’t feel your practice time is being compromised (at least not as much). As ctyhntr saying you would be a high 6 or 7 is probably a bit off. I would say a high 5 or a 6, 7’s typically would be considered “B” players and above.

One last note, having your own table isn’t always the greatest. Yes it is nice to be able to hit some at the house, but after a while it is nice to have an opponent, an audience, and just some fellowship. I just got a table a few months ago (shown in my avatar) and I probably play as much away from home as I do at home. It seems like there is always something else that needs to be done at home so it is difficult relax and play.

Good luck to all finding enjoyment in everything that we do!

you will probably cut down on the bozo factor

Made me chuckle. My wife laughs at me when we do go to a bar to play on rare occasion. I seem to be somewhat of a retard magnet some nights.

I don't like playing just anyone in the bar but the fact is, its a challenge table
and everyone has a right to play. I find most times, its just a guy by himself in the bar and all he wants is someone to have a game or two with.

After getting beat a couple of times they seem to have enuff and thank you for the games and leave.

I'm a friendly guy and will talk to anyone, unless they happen to be a drunken knob, then I don't put up with that for long.

Beyond that, I find my wife and I are spending more time at the hall lately.

Interesting that this happened to me tonight of all nights, and of the first time. Played for about an hour by myself before anyone showed up. Was about to leave, and some burnout asked to play one quick game. He didn't like that I wasn't calling "spin" on the ball, and got angry. I ran out to the eight and he picked it up and threw it past my head. I grabbed my coat, hid the cue ball to ruin it for him, and left. Wow.

Never had any confrontations before.

Ouch man, that is pretty rough. That doesn't sound like a place id return! I have had tempers explode after a match with money being involved (gambling and tournament) but a "quick game" surely doesn't constitute such an outburst. I would seriously look for another place even if it required a bit more travel.

That's rough, man. Probably after those experiences and THAT experience in particular I would not return to that place. Not worth getting hurt over some frivolous things like that.

As for 8 ball rules, I always ask these few questions:
- Table open after break?
- No luck shots?
- What about fouls/scratches? Do we play it where it lands, do we move the cueball behind the line, or do we have ball in hand?

I play the opponent's rules just to avoid any arguments. Most of the time it's behind the line on fouls/scratches and take what you make. Though I've played people who don't understand the rail rule and they play safeties you would see in snooker where they just roll the cue ball up to their set. I've even had people shoot blankly into the table and not hit anything and then tell me "It was a legal shot, the cue ball hit the rail"

I would say, "What? Ok." then I play using their rules of no rail to annoy them. I would play shots where I rolled all my balls near a corner or block the 8 ball using my set. Trick here is to annoy them with their own rules for fun. But in your case, that place sounds dangerous.

I don't even know how I'd begin to call "spin." is it called on the object ball, cue ball... What if you shoot a drag shot that changes midway?

I think your experience gave the answer you needed. Good job not beating the guy to death after he threw the 8 at your head. I'm not sure I'd be able to let that slide.

Sounds like you need a different place to play.

One thing that I'm good at especially for being a newer player is composure. He threw the ball, and I tauntingly said "I don't like your attitude. No more pool tonight" like a mother would to a child, and left with a couple balls so he couldn't play a full game with anyone else. I bet that put him into a rage when he found out.

Ah well. I'll just watch accustats for a while and continue saving for a house.

barrooms

I been playing in bars & pool rooms for over 50 yrs.
If your in a bar with only one table it's usually an open table, anyone can challenge and house rules prevail. The challenger dosn't have to play by your rules. If you don't like it, give up the table and go somewhere with more than one table where you can practice to whatever rules you like.

So long as your both playing by the same rules the game is fair.

If you can't be bothered to learn the house rules don't complain.

If your in a bar where leagues are played they will have a rule book and it will more than likely be different from tournament or pro rules.

If your in a bar and not gambling who gives a rats behind what the rules are, you just make up as you go along and have another cold one.

Another option could be to find a couple good books to read can also be a great way of "learning" while not at the table. I strongly suggest "Pleasures of Small Motions" by Bob Fancher, "The 8-Ball Bible" by R. Givens, and "The 99 Criticle Shots in Pool" by Ray Martin.

These books will run you about $50 but cover a lot of great information. There are many great pool books but I did a lot of research on these forums and this was what I came up with for the amount that I wanted to spend :)
