Don't know if I'll ever run a hundred!

The first 100 is hard. You are at that level where you are probably running 3 or 4 racks regularly. But various limitation in your game are holding you back....fundamentals, rhythm, shot-making, pattern play, table, who knows???. Video tape yourself and self critique, be honest about your shortcomings and work on them.

Hi runs in straight pool are accomplished through progression coupled with self awareness. You can't "think" or "will" a high run, they just happen. They happen because of thorough knowledge of the game along with confidence.

As you get better you will start to hit a hundred and ideally you will be almost indifferent to it. This is good, it means you are a multiple rack runner, sometimes 30, sometimes 60, and ever so often 130, etc..

The great straight pool players have reached a level of accomplishment where they are running a 100, like you run 20.

I started playing at 14.
Back then the big game was 14.1.
I ran my first 100 at 16.
Why is a 100 the magic number?
I've run a bunch of 60s and 70s and some of them were really hard with a few miracle shots to extend the run.
After the first one, running a 100 was not so exciting.
Now i didn't run them very often but it was like OK I hit a 100+ a few again.
The best and more satisfying runs were the 40, 50 and 60 out for the cash.
I mainly played 75 point games so big high runs didn't happen often.
I don't remember a 75 and out.But it could have happened.
I played a lot of 14.1 in the 60's,70's and 80's.
Then it all switched to 9 ball mainly.

Same reason people celebrate the 10th, 25th, 50th -- whether birthdays, weddings, or Super bowls. 100 is a good number.

My goals were 25,50,75, and now 100

Got a little out of line, but made a great shot to get back in line. Count is 74 with an easy shot to put me in position to take out rest of rack. Ball rattled in pocket and stayed up.....ARGHHH!!! It's always the easy ones that get me..lack of concentration or something! Oh well I hit the 70's again and trying to stay positive!

I always found 80 to be a difficult number to surpass. But once past that getting to the hundreds was next, then 140 seemed to lurk as a world beater type of number, on a good day could/would take down any great. Like Al Coslosky did in Johnston City one year, winning the 14.1 division. Hell all I thought he was there for was racking balls/referee and getting paid for his work. But he could play that game with the best of em.

I played pool for money almost every day from the age of 19 to 33. I played exactly one Straight Pool match for money in that time against the Florida state champion. I ran 72 and out for $100 and I've never played Straight Pool for money again. That remains my high run in life at this game and have no desire to try to better it. I realized early on there was no money to be made at Straights so I left it alone.

I will say this, I did use 14.1 as a practice game many times just to get my cue ball under control and I often ran 40's, 50's and a couple of 60's. But I'm a shortstop, not a good player like some of the guys on here. :bow-down:

I just hit my high run of 56 a couple of weeks ago so I understand where the frustration comes from. Congrats on the 74 though, definitely going the right direction! I need to work on cue ball control and seeing better patterns. My runs normally end with me out of shape with a tough shot.
