Dopingtests in pool

I've heard that someone got caught in a dopingtest in a pool tournament in Norway. He was no one famous, but we started wondering how common are the dopingtests in pool tournaments ? Do they take doping samples in US Open, World Pool Championships and international tournaments around US, Asia or Europe ?

There are always rumours that someone has been playing on some illegal substance but has no one ever been convicted for doping ? I know that there has been a few cases in snooker pro tour in Britain, even a couple of famous players have been caught, but I'm not sure if they were caught for using a doping via a test on a urine sample or just possessing illegal narcotics during a tournament.

Any info ? Should this issue be enforced lightly or strictly, opinions ?

Don't know but imagine drug testing tournaments in the 70s, lol.

If they did a doping test at all tournaments in the US, out of a 128 player field there would be only 28 players left to play in a tournament! So, no they don't do any testing here and never will.

This is reminiscent of a futile attempt by major league baseball (1991?) to eliminate gambling in the clubhouses. Len Dykstra, then a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, was interviewed on the subject and commented "if they suspend everyone on this team that plays cards for money in the clubhouse, then Dale Murphy will have nobody to play catch with in pre-game warmups."

What are these doping tests supposed to prove, that someone was just high or that they were taking a drug to enhance performance? I can't think of any drugs that would enhance performance in pool other than speed/uppers if you're playing an all day and all night marathon. But that's not done in tournaments. Beta blockers might help calm the nerves, slow down the heart rate, and reduce flinches, but many individuals are on them for high blood pressure anyway. Does that mean anybody with high bp on beta blockers can't play in tournaments? They've never shown that steroids can produce an atomic bomb break that's guaranteed to sink 3-4 balls each time. Like alcohol, I don't see where smoking a joint enhances performance, unless you just want to laugh your ass off after missing shots. I see no reason for drug testing anywhere in the world for pool. Drugs will reduce performance, and if they found someone to be high while playing, so what.

Drivermaker,

For a short while, certain drugs will increase performance because they remove "fear" from the playing factors. I've watched guys race around the table, rack after rack, firing balls in. After one or two sets they just as rapidly run to the bathroom for more courage. Eventually, no amount of "courage" helps and the player mechanically or mentally collapses. How about the player who loses to that person? If your playing heads up, thats your choice. If it occurs in tournament play, why should it be acceptable? Wouldn't you be even the slightest bit angry at that prospect? I'd prefer to have a relatively level playing field.

Does tobacco use have any effect on the body and could that be classified as a drug?

Mikko, I know that they do drug testing on the Euro Tour, I was just curious what the punishment is for a positive test? The only way a drug can help a player out is if he's playing a long grueling (sp?) tournament and takes something to improve his stamina. There isn't a drug in the world that's gonna help you run racks.

aderol makes you concentrate alot harder than you normally would. It's basically legal speed to an extent. If you take aderol and play you'll have tunnel vision at the table and your concentration will be unbreakable. I'm sure it would help with pressure and nerves too.

Any ofyou guys ever taken aderol and played?

Ok then Hemi.....what is the drug that helps you run racks?

Thought about it for a long time, Pigcarver and decided not to list them here. If you have access to a PDR you can find them yourself though.

I will help ya Hemi!

Methamphetamine Hydrochloride for one. You might die but you will play the best game of pool you ever played in your life. I play on the natural, but back in the early 70's, snappers were available in all the action rooms. I mean all of em.

Thanks hemi, there's enough pain out there now. By the time you figure out the effect is too short term to make any real difference, you're hooked. The trail only leads down. More and more for less and less.

Excuse me for butting in, but caffiene is one that many players use. See that previous thread from last week about "what do you guys drink?"

The second most popular (imho) is nicotine. According to the APA, about half the players smoke, so maybe it should be #1. Make a smoker play without his tobacco and he's ususally MUCH easier to beat.

I'd place alcohol third, and coke/meth next...maybe pot.

Whether anyone of these is helpful or not, depends on the player and circumstances.

I've been beaten on a.m. matches by my opponents' newly-focused play after their frequent visits to the bathroom. It kinda pisses me off, to tell the truth---even though I had been consuming a drug, too, (alcohol) at the time.

Where is the line to be drawn, and more importantly, who will draw it?
