Dots over the "o" in Schon

I have seen Schon's both with and without the umlaut (dots over the o). Is their a reason for this?

I met a Schon dealer in Louisville one year and asked him about the pronunciation, and he told me that it should be pronounced as "SHONE."

As an American, I've always heard it referred to as "SHON."

Edit: Just wanted to see if I could insert the double dots: Schön! Hey, I did it!

Schön is German for pretty. It's actually pretty hard to pronounce. closest i can spell is 'shern'. i pronounce the cue brand same as the name Shawn (like JAM).

The word "schön" (with and without the umlaut) is rather enigmatic to non-German speaking Americans (which I am one).

I've researched this before and ended up concluding that the word "schön" (with the umlaut) means "beautiful" and is pronounces as "shern". This is surely the meaning the founder of the Schon company wanted to employ.

In actuality, when typing German, if umlaut letters are not available, the proper way is to replace them with the underlying vowel and a following <e>. So, for example, "Schröder" becomes "Schroeder". As the pronunciation differs greatly between the normal letter and the umlaut, simply omitting the dots is considered incorrect.

The word "schon" (without the umlaut) means "already"...quite a difference that little umlaut makes.

Over time, Schön (the company) may have realized the importance of maintaining the umlauts. Their product seems to reflect that as they stress the umlauts on their shafts now.

EDIT: I took to long to type...the above poster beat me to it!

Yeah I knew the meaning of Schön from taking German in High School/College. Most people do not pronounce it properly but what can you do. My second cue was a Schön Ltd and was a pretty cue.

I also know the secret keys. I like typing this one for a face. ô¿ô

I’m not concerned as to the pronunciation or meaning of the symbol but what I am wondering is why some have it and why some don’t. Was their a year that they started using it on the cue?

Mine in '97 had umlauts...not sure when it changed to/from that.

In Germany, as you said, it's close to 'shern."

I've said this before, and I guess I'll keep saying it until I'm blue. One of the reasons there's a discussion on how it's pronounced by the company is because they do pronounced it like Shawn. But here's the big kicker that people who don't travel or might not pay attention: Shawn is pronounced so different in different parts of the country. It's no coincidence that almost all the ways people pronounce Schön are also all the ways people pronounce Shawn.

LOL!!! When I called him for an interview, he clearly (clear to me, LOL!!) said it with a short o. That's what I'm talking about. We all hear it and say it however our brains decipher it.

doesnt do a thing for me- but that isnt unusual. I couldnt even do the rackmsucker cursor thing either.

Schon cues

As far as I know, cues that contain the umlaats(dots), were made when Bob Runde, one of the founders, was with Schon cues. They chaged it when he sold his share of the company back to Terry Romine. The reason I know this is because I used to live in Milwaukee and used to work in Romine's pool room, before Schon Cues got too big for the back room and moved to their own location.
