double to single elimination

can someone explain why the final 8 are punished into single elimination ?this tourney is a good example of what im talking about but its seems like its not just this tourney that does this...shouldnt the first few rounds be single elimination and then let the final 8 or 16 be double...i dont see how it is fair or reasonable to have someone with one loss eliminate someone with no loses( i realize undefeated is undefeated but you win (x) amount of matches on the winners side then the tourney switches to single elimination ...
i understand you must play well to get there regardless but i would consider it a bonus to make it to the final 8 or 16 and then switch to double elim...tournies would go way faster in the begining rounds and scheduling would be exactly the same...in the end its almost unfair...

How many entrants, and how deep do the pay outs go? Double elimination at the start could help ensure that the top players don't go out on a fluke. But once you're "in the money" switching to single elimination kind of makes sense.

how? player a wins for example 5 matches in a row on the winners side(plays perfect)
player b loses 2nd match now comes through losers bracket to the 3/4 or 5/8 spots?
thats rediculous..nobody goes to lose but why do some get 2 chances and others get 1?
how does that make sense?

I agree that format sucks. WPBA use to use that format for about a half dozen years. Johnnyt

Switching formats in the middle of an event does not make any sense. Supposedly one player was upset as they did not know & it was never mentioned in the players meeting.

I assumed they should have just read the format which was listed on the site for everyone to see. However it turns out the format was changed at some point as both pro rotation events were originally scheduled to be double elimination throughout.

Links were posted to an archived cache of the page only from a couple of weeks ago that show that to be the case. So why the change & why was it not announced in the players meeting?

If the format was changed mid stream then foul on the director. But otherwise you can just look at it as making-the-cut. Can you link to a diagram of the bracket?

i wrote all over fb that its a complete screw job on anyone who was undefeated in both events...

It depends on how they play. I played in a tournaments in Europe with like 300 players and we played single down to 32. Then there was a redraw and a new tournament started double. In other words the single was sort of an qualifier or making the cut as someone else said for the main tournament. In the main tournament all 32 were in the money.

makes waaay more sense

and yes this tourney was changed midstream as far as i know... i hope earl went nuts
cause its super bullchit expo in my mind now
and i had nothing but goodthings to say before this

I hate it to but the tournament would have had to goto monday if they did that or had more tables. I left at during the semi finals and that was after 4 so I can imagine it's going to go late tonight

I think that this format is a step in the right direction. Good job Hopkins.

all due respect why on earth is it a step in the right direction to give some players 1 chance and another 2? .... in reverse order no less...

if you start w 128 or 64 and the first rounds are single elim the tourny speeds up automatically and the final 8 or 16 can be scheduled appropriately..let them grind wed-friday and have saturday and sunday be all the money

and btw this was advertised as double elimination so not a good job this time.
and one more btw i have always spoken highly of allen and the expo as i know it is a huge undertaking and is extremely well run.

no it wouldnt..3 or 4 matches in a day is normal for every weekend warrior who goes to a local event no? so why cant pros play 4 or 5 in a day?

I couldn't figure out why Shane and Earl were not playing last night. Total BS move switching to Single Elim. I wouldn't have paid/supported one bit.

Agree 100%

Hmmmmm......

Kiamco-Strickland....one loss.....out at 5/8 place
Kennedy-Dechaine....one loss....can still win it all

Pagulayan....1 loss....out at 3/4 place
Morra-Hohmann...1 loss....can still win it all

For me, this is unacceptable

Shorter matches would've solved a time problem...like races to seven all the way.

Unless you have a redraw, or you have a situation where the winners side guys are seeded, and their next matches are guaranteed to be against losers side guys so they don't play each other immediately, it's a pretty stupid format
IMO.
You will have a situation like what happened today, and loser of the hot seat match (first loss of the tournament) is out of the event and gets 3rd/4th, and guys who already lost a match, who play each other on the one loss side, (since loser of the hot seat match doesn't move to losers side) is guaranteed 2nd place.

Probably the most unfair format I have ever seen.

If you are gonna do a tournament, do it right.
Start the one pocket on Thursday like the 10ball, and give yourself that extra day to finish the tournament in proper fashion.
Or just make the whole thing single elimination so players don't get screwed over.
And for those players that want to play in BOTH, tell them tough crap.

I love the expo.
That does not mean that it can't be better.

I don't mind the WPA 9ball championship format.

128 players, double elimination til final 32 then it becomes single elim.
