Hello.

The following is a review of a Doug Patrick Custom cue I ordered I drew it up and started looking for Cue makers ... Doug was the one that I settled on to make this cue and with his help this is what we came up with so it is really a design that was thought of by both of us in the end. First let me say that Doug is very easy to work with and easy to get a hold of . He has great communication skills and is very easy to access. He also has great customer service.

The cue is Holly in the Butt sleeve ... and points ... Wenge in the Merry Windows and the Forearm... Turqious & White colored veneers , with turqious crosses in the Merry Windows and points...

Two Shafts 12.75 in diameter ... 29 inches long

LBM Ferrells

Butt is 29 inches long

Moori tips ... ( I plan to replace these with Everest tips )

Doug chose the ring work for the cue ...

Radial Pin

The cue is suppose to wiegh in at 19.5 but feels light... I will have to put it on a scale ... But expect it to wiegh in at 19.5.

Ringtail Lizzard wrap...

The joint is Ivory ...

Balance point is 19 inches from the Butt...

Doug has been a pleasure to deal with ... The cue was a little behind on the delivery date ... But honestly that is at my request for him to take his time and get the cue right I asked this of him several times I was in no rush just wanted a good job done. I did not want a rush job and a bungled cue and Doug hit this one very nicely and did an excellent job making any wait well worth it and it was not really much of a wait at all ... All I could do was smile when I took the cue out of the package the finish was very nice and the inlay work sharpe ... The wrap looks and feels good I have gotten alot of compliments on the wrap and the cue. The inlays are nicely done and look natural setting in the cue no complaints there. The veneers again nicely done the cue feels even with no glue lines felt. If I have one thing to change on the cue I might of gone back and put a little more color in the veneers ... But I chose the colors so I'm not complaining I wanted to go with a simple color theme and that is what I have ...

Playability ... I have been using the cue off and on for a week or two ... The cue goes together nicely and everything lines up smoothly ... It has a very nice smooth hit to it like your shooting through the cue ball effortlessly ... It is no wonder Doug finds good players willing to have him for a sponsor and play with his cues. The cue draws the ball well and gets forward english well in fact contact with forward english and you can see the cue ball pickup speed and hit the corner pocket very solid after contact. It gets left and right english just as well it is one of those cues that when you shoot with it you get the confidence you can put the cue ball anywhere on the table you desire. I have a friend who is a cue maker and well known for good cues here on AZ...he came over to my house for the first time last week and asked to see my new Patrick ...He got on my table and put the cue through the test and he did not take it easy on the cue ... I babied the cue because it looks so nice and I shot with it gingerly at first but my friend really put it through the ropes and liked the response and feedback he got from the cue ... He is also a very good player after hitting with it for awhile he liked the cue and the action that it got and he felt Doug did a great job on the cue. He ran the cue ball forward and reversed as I watched he said it sounded like he was slamming the cue ball into the pocket but he was really not hitting it that hard it was the english and feedback the cue ball picked up after contact. I got the same impression when I tested the cue it really responds well , Looks and feels good...

Over all I would give Doug an A on this cue if I were to grade him on it ... I'm very happy with the cue and happy with the way Doug treats his customers. If your thinking of buying a custom ... Doug Patrick is certainly a name to put on your short list ...

Thanks Doug ...
I will post some pics below ...

First of all thank you for writing this review!

The joint on the the cue is IVORY and the ferulles are LBM.

Thank you!
Butch is great to deal with. I would recommend him to anyone that is thinking of doing any knd of business with him!

Thanks Doug ... Wow an Ivory joint I do appreciate that I know I did not ask for it because I feared it would make the price of the cue go through the roof ... I was pretty sure I asked for some type of sustitute ... Thank you very much for that added perk ... It is very much appreciated and I can't tell you how thankful I am that you would throw that in...

I know when we first talked about this cue. You was talking about a Ivory joint. You was worried about the price. I figured that with all the work that was in the cue that it really needed the Ivory joint to set it off.

It was a pleasure dealing with you Butch!

This cue is absolutely gorgeous in person. I agree that the veneers lack much color, but it really sets off the inlays and keeps the cue from looking cluttered jmho.

Nice looking cue. is there some significance to the "cross" design? It looks more like some medieval double bladed axe.

I am not sure about the anything behind the cross design. Butch sent me a picture of what he was looking for. So I inlaid it in the cue.

I seen this cue up close. Looks great ,pics. dont do it right. The colers are real nice and it all works great together. Again great job. Jeff

Well the cross really has no meaning to anyone but me ... What I wanted was a old Gothic Battle cross from the Medieval days ... Doug needed something kind of basic he could make a pattern for the inlays for. I could not find anything that I really liked enough to put onto a cue ... So I found an old Celtic War Cross and customized it to something I would want ... I extended the arms on the cross to make it look more like a battle axe rounding and extending the end of the arms to form a blade on each side ... I extended the base to make it longer then what I was looking at and drew it up kind of plain and simple ...

The meaning of the cross of course as I said it has no meaning to anyone but me ... I wanted a custom cue and was struggling to think of ideas to put on the cue when the cross came to mind. I play alot but all to often when playing against friends or for fun I tend to get lackidasical and lose that killer instinct ... Missing shots that I would make under more serious conditions ... Throw some money in and my game gets alot better but all to often when playing friends or for free I pick up bad habits that will stay with me a few days ... And it is only from not trying as hard and just pounding the balls ... When it comes to playing friends or for fun I kind of lose the eye of the tiger so to speak... I don't have that killer instinct heck it is only a friend or just for fun ...

So I drew up this cross and asked Doug to build this cue for me... For me when I look at the cross and see the battle blades it reminds me that I am at war with my opponent and that I need to remain focused and keep the eye of the Tiger and take them out ... Kind of like a cue you see with chess pieces on it ... But that aspect of my game is fine as I appraoch each game no matter what as a chess match always trying to out think my opponent on offense and defense.

Yeah it may sound silly I know but I'm always looking for any edge ...If this cross helps me to stay focused and approach each game as a battle that I have to win and to keep the eye of the tiger so to speak then it is well worth it to me ... And for me that is the meaning of the cross... The cross is really a combo of the Maltese Cross and Consecration Cross from the medieval days I just looked the two over and kind of combined them to what I wanted ...

And Doug did a gret job of putting them in this cue and brought the first custom cue that I ever had a hand in drawing up to life... And it does look much better then the pictures show Doug's work is amazing and he knows what he is doing ... It is truly a piece of art work that Doug has put together for me people love the cue and the positive responses I get when I show it off is a joy in it's own right... One that I get to enjoy time after time when I pull this baby out of the case ...

Wow! Great explanation. I like the concept and the celtic origin is appropriate, being a "Patrick" cue. Good luck doing battle with your new battleaxe cue.

Wow!

Well that explains it! I knew I should have said that I couldn't do it. Now I am going to be out in a tournament or somewhere playing and I will run into Butch. J/K

Butch:

It was a pleasure being able to build this cue for you!

Thanks:

The more I play with this cue the more I enjoy it .... It is a little on the light side but I have chose to leave it like that as I play well with the cue .... Doug's cues to me are right up there with Sly's or vice versa and that is saying alot for me because I think the world of Leon Sly's cues. There is just something about Doug's cues that have that certain hit that give you confidence in your shot like you feel you can make anything on the table and get position. The playability of Dougs cues is exceptional as Doug told me Playability is what he strives for first in his cues and the looks are second but he has hit both with this cue in my book... I own two of Dougs cues this one and a sneaky and they both play very well...

Thanks again for a job well done ....Doug ...
