Dr. King Was A Straight Shooter

Found this and thought I’d share. Who knew he was a player?

He's one of the celebrities on my Pool Photo page. He, Babe Ruth, and Senator Eugene McCarthy are my most recent additions. I think I opted for MLK's behind the back shot because he was obviously just hamming it up for the cameras. The shot clearly doesn't require that kind of approach.

My annual bump for the holiday. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Dr. King Day today.:)

Hope everyone has a great MLK day. I traveled thru Atlanta's airport over the holiday's and I really enjoyed the MLK exhibit they have there. It's interesting how some of the greatest men in our history enjoyed playing pool... Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, George Washington.

TX Poolnut how is it your annual bump if you've never bumped it previously? :D

I think I'll make it my annual bump from now on. It's either that or start a new thread every year. No need for that. Peace.

I saw a book at work that had a picture of MLK playing pool that I had never seen before. I think I'm gonna snap a picture of it at work and post it here.

Thanks for posting those. I showed them to my girlfriend and it was the first time she ever appreciated any pool related item. :)

Bump this thread in honor and memory of MLK Jr's life and legacy....

I was gonna wait until next January to post this picture, but since today is a day to remember Dr. King, here it is.

I found this picture in a book called "Martin Luther King Jr., 1929-1968: An Ebony Picture Biography." It was on pages 68-69. The ISBN for the book is 0974850053.

This was taken during his time in Chicago like some of the other pictures.

BTW, the sign on the wall reads "Please PAY BEFORE GAME."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Pre-flag chalk...it doesn't get any better than that.

A great day for a great American.

Gene

PS Thanks for the pics Poolnut. Green reps for you.

Thanks for another picture of MLK Jr. shooting pool. Let me preface this by saying that I think race is a cultural creation, and outside of its existence in culture there is no scientific credibility to this cultural concept.

But, I have witnessed a lot of racism throughout my life, this being partially due to the color of my skin, and the geographic area that I grew up.

Though this has definitely not been true throughout history - but in my short lifetime of 30 years... out of the establishments I frequent, whether it be bars, shopping malls, an occasional run in with the law, etc... the place I have where I seen the least amount of prejudice has been in pool halls... I've been called a lot of foul names in pool halls, but never have I ever been referred to by a racial slur. Now if I go to bar in my hometown, it is pretty much a given.

Its also nice to see the human side of Rev. King, something that I can relate too on a more personal level... a human shooting a game of pool. Hopefully, MLK Jr. will be remembered as a great American, not simply a decisive figure in "black" history. He belongs in every American's view of history.

King was a Socialist/Communist. Nuff said.

Happy MLK Day everyone.:)

Thanks again for the pics. I think he's probably the greatest person this country has ever produced.

Nice "annual" bump tex :) This thread always cheers me up. I like how everyone in the picture of him shooting behind his back is smiling ear to ear. Today is a great day to an American.

WOW, I missed this the first time around!
