Drama......

last sunday night some drama took place between my g/f who is captain of our team, a team mate of ours vs the other captain and the co captain. the dram was over a certain rule vs etiquete or it could be termed sportsmanship.

the drama escalated to the point where the other captain yelled at my g/f and called her a damn liar. my team mate and the other captain got into a shouting match where it escalated to the point of almost going outside to finish the conversation with fists flying

my g/f then agreed to break the rule which would have resulted in them forfieting the last match " in the name of sportsmanship " and the other team wound up winning the match causing us to lose for the night after we were ahead after the 4th match.

i was not aware of all this until we got home and my g/f started telling me this. at the time this was going on i was on the other side of the room playing with a friend of mine on an open table. she had waited until we got jome to tell me this because if she had told me before we left i would not have bothered calling him outside before fists started flying.

we both talked about how much we love league but hate the occasional drama and were thinking about quitting after this session is over in 3 weeks. it even crossed my mind that all the league bashers on az might be right about leagues.

i have not worked this week due to the weather and upcoming holiday so i have been reading a lot on az. after reading all of the posts in the mosconi threads and the one pocket action thread i got enlightened a little bit.

talk about drama....those threads are filled with drama. you so called serious players give a lowly league player the 5 out when it comes to drama. those threads are full of name calling and saying i would knock you out if you pulled that move on me whether its a rule or not' in the name of etiquite" wow... just wow !

i do realize that some times people may be real nice in person but turn into 12 year old internet bad asses behind a computer. all i got to say about that is...if any of you are even remotely in person the way you come across on this forum i think i would rather play apa and fade the slop than play any of you " serious players ".... and i really hate slop.

Most leagues suck! APA being at the top of the suck list for me. I quit 6 years ago and realized that I didn't miss it. It's ALL drama with sandbagging and people trying to win through a handbook instead of on a table. People play that league to go and compete in Vegas at the end of a year. Just add the amount you pay each league night by how many times you play each session, add a couple cocktails and maybe some dinner and you'll quickly realize you could pay for a trip there on your own. You'd be better off just paying sanction fees and just go play in mini tournaments.
I play on a local league where there is NO cash payouts or trips. It's trophies for first and second place along with a traveling trophy for the host location. Each person pays 50 bucks for the year and all that money gets put in a kitty and they do a massive banquet with more food then you can eat and what ever is left over gets split evenly amongst all the players. I have more fun on that league then I ever had on BCA or APA. And I'm home LONG before midnight. :D

Drama, my take on it.... I am surprised as hell that people will spend hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours on this board or any other internet site arguing every little thing that happens to death. Get real, go hit some pool balls, spend time with your people and enjoy life. Ain't shit on here worth getting so worked up about:eek:

Agree wholeheartedly.

Here's a little different twist on leagues. We have a no money 8 ball league at our
senior center, last night I was playing against a lady who just started playing a short time
ago and is total taken by pool. As I said there is no money involved so a few times I
gave her hints on which shot to take and even sort of gave her an opportunity to win.
Just think there are times when it's better to try to encourage new players
than beat their brains in.

Drama is everywhere but i know what u mean something has happen like this a few times with my team im sick of apa my self think im gonna just play tourneys for now on

LR, how is this for stupid drama. Once had a competitor whom I was playing 5 - 2 in our local weekly APA night complain the cue ball was SLIGHTLY over the line on my first break. Looked at him and said "really ?". Proceeded to play a zero inning match against him. Of course I checked each subsequent break to be absolutely sure the cue ball was really, total behind the line. After finishing the match, I showed him the table where the cloth had been recently re-streched. The spot was nearly an inch below the line between the diamonds. He hadn't looked. Guess I can be a drama queen as well :o .

No offense, buy you should not be away from YOUR TEAM when it is still playing. You have an obligation to be there during YOUR TEAM'S match.

I'm thinking that's a personal opinion on your part....

On my Tuesday night 9-ball league, we are assigned a playing table and a practice table. Sometimes they are close, but often separated a bit of space. We are obligated to have a score keeper, and usually at least one or two other teammates stays around and watches... Especially to coach the 2's & 3's...

Maybe you feel obligated to watch matches all night, but part of the reason APA is such a good value at our hall is because of free table time on league night. And we have a very good vibe of solidarity on our team...

Don't mind Jeff. He wants freedom for everyone until it's something that HE feels like you should be obligated to do.

Jeff,

Tried to stay near my APA team on league nights. Always fail miserably as I discovered I'm a very poor coach for beginning players. Also fail as a coach for more advanced players. Tried for a couple of years. Have a hard time relating to players who don't understand what pocket speed, stop the cue ball or play a safety mean. Keep telling them a well played safety is the most powerful shot in pool. They'd rather lose shooting an unmakeable shot. They came to shoot not duck. One team mate hates it when I try to suggest (in my opinion) a winning shot. They'd rather shoot till there's nothing left to make and have no shot then call time out and ask me what to do now. And I'm decribing fives and sixes.

Just in case you want to suggest I quit playing with them, I truely enjoy their company. League nights or not! Starting my fifth season, not session with them.

no offense taken. as a matter of fact i usually am with the team the entire time keeping score and coaching. i had an opportunity to play with a 7/9 and he was willing to give me pointers and i took him up on it. and guess what ? one of the few times i am not there shit hit the fan lol.

in case ya'll want to know. this is double jeapordy now . we were facing the 1st place team in 8 ball and they are 2nd in 9 ball also. we are in 3rd place in 8 ball and middle of the pack in 9 ball.

when we started the matches they told us they only had 4 people there and would need some one to replay both 8 and 9 ball.

the rules regarding replay are as follows.

1. replays are allowed if the opposing captain agrees.
2. replays have to meet the 23 rule
3.a replay player can not play back to back matches
4. a replay player can not play both 8 and 9 ball matches at the same time.
5. the opposing captain is the one who chooses the designated replay player.

so with the rules clarified here....here is what went down.

last match. my g/f is waiting for them to put up their designated player in 8 ball. they keep stalling for 5 minutes ...breaking the 2 minute rule to start the match. then the player who is playing the last 9 ball match goes up and puts quarters in the 8 ball table to play that match also.. so that player is gonna start playing 8 ball while finishing up 9 ball at the same time.

my g.f tells the captain that is not who she designated to play the last 8 ball match. well he tells her that is who he wants to play.so she reminds him that after the 3rd match she told him that that person who just played is who she wanted to play the 5th match. that is when he called her a damn liar and shit hit the fan. well she finally relented and they broke rules 3, 4 , and 5. not too mention the 2 minute rule to start a match. i told her she just should have refused to play the match and make them forfeit.

i told her at home she just should have stuck to her guns. she said she did not want to be a ***** about it.....i said why not ? he was being an asshole about it not too mention breaking several rules.

in all honesty we very seldom have drama in this league but this incident really took us both by surprise.

You forgot to mention is was APA. That's what I call the "loner" league. The last shooter is left alone to be the team.

Nevermind.

I'd be up for playing in just tournaments too, but how do you get into tournaments with no established handicap?

Don't you guys have that "mypoolstats" thing? Maybe its just a local thing here, I am not sure. If the LO or TD enters the info on the Interweb site it keeps track of all of your competition play and you get a certain points rating that tells everyone your skill level.
I wish I could do better but that's the best explanation I have for it.

I never liked my pool playing life more than after I quit league.
Now I' free with no obligation can come and go as I please and the game is back to being what I originally fell in love with.
