Drexeline Billiards is going smokefree !!!

From an employee standpoint, if you don't like smoke, don't apply for a job at a bar or any other place that allows smoking.

Wouldn't that be restricting their freedom to work where they want?

Sorry, but I believe in the American way. Let the owner decide. Then allow the customer to decide if he minds the smoke. Why oh why do people have such a hang-up about other people's choices? Given a choice, I'd probably choose a smoke-free bar or pool room. But I want the choice made by me, not by the government. Saddens me to see what's happened to this country of ours.

And no ... I've never smoked and never would. But I do believe in freedom.

Best of both worlds. If I was going to let the market decide and not the politicians. I would build a pool room that was wall divided with one side smoking and the other side not. I would let the maket decide which side was bigger based on profit. IMO

Bar league Gerry, the fish man is the captain of my team, by the way he played like a monster and we wiped the floor with the other team so we are locked in 1st place.

With the low ceiling it is a good idea. There was no way for the smoke to escape.

My local pool hall in Illinois went smoke free on New Years and as far as a decline in customer i have not seen any who wants to stand in the snow hudled up around each other to smoke a cancer stick:D

Good for Bob.

It is a big step and there might be some temporary backlash but it will pass. He has a great room and he can do what he wants.

I suspect that in the end it will have been a good business move and will attract more people than it chases away.

In 15 years, smoking will be banned in every state but N.C. and maybe Virginia.

They are already working on NC. My guess is that will be some form of statewide ban by the end of the year.

Went to the room this morning and the few regulars there had no problem with reducing their smoking.
The remark made to me was maybe it will help me to quit this terrible addiction!!!

Craig - I googled freedom to work and the only hits had to do with senior citizens and those with disabilities... so that doesn't seem to apply.

Did you mean right to work? If so, here's that definition... from wikipedia...
Right to work is the concept that people have a human right to work, and may not be prevented from doing so.

To me, it says they have a right to work and may not be prevented from doing so. I don't believe that a business that allows smoking is preventing a person working there. I believe that the standard for preventing would be considerably higher... fwiw.

wikipedia can never be used as a reliable source.

Freedom to work can imply the freedom to work in a safe environment. Smoke filled rooms have been consistently showed to NOT be a safe working environment which is the reasoning behing the majority of state wide smoking bans.

so should the government stop alaska commercial crab fishing or coal mining. to very unsafe occupations. give me a break. freedom is about choices not about the government telling you how to run your business or run your life.

I can't argue with facts if halls are closing down because of the smoking ban, but what does it say about pool when people quit because they can't smoke while shooting?

The smoking ban will push smokers out and will attract non-smokers. It's a simple adjustment, things will balance over time.

I'm the fulltime houseman at Drexeline Billiards and believe me, the room goin smoke free will be GOOD for business. I'm a smoker myself but the notice about going smoke free has been up for a month and the vast majority of the smokers in the room realize (with a little explaining) that it is better for the room. If you have never been to Drexeline, the ceiling is very low. The room is located in a basement and there is only one door used by the patrons. There are several smoke-eaters but they could never really do the job needed on a crowded Friday night when I will have anywhere from 150-250 people in the room. The customers were the deciding factor in deciding to go smoke-free. Bob asked around for a long time and the large majority were in favor of banning smoking. But if you are a smoker, all is not lost. Bob has ordered several nice benches to be put outside the door for patrons that want to smoke and during this upcoming summer, it will be nice to get some cool air in the middle of the night. Cheers.
