Well, another pool story from way back.
Me and Scott Wright were on our way to Myrtle Beach. Scott Wright was all offense and a "spoiler" to a lot of pros and roadplayers. He even beat Tony Ellin a couple of sets once. Then quit on him. That is another story. We had just broken the seal on Jack when we were about an hour outside of Florence.
Mixing some small drinks (so not to be so fu@#ed up when we got to the poolroom at the beach), we were listening to "Mainstreet" on the radio. Along came this convertible with fuzzy "eightballs" hanging from the rearview mirror. There were two guys in it and raising the beers high as they passed us. "Let's fu#$ with'em" Scott screamed over "pool halls, the hustlers, and the losers". So, I caught back up with them. I was in my Alpine White 944 that I just bought. Great little car. Anyway, Scott leans out of the window and points to the fuzzy dice. "You play?"
"Yep, why? You want to lose some money?" They yelled back. "If you do, we're getting off at this next exit. Come and get you some." Well, you couldn't have laughed harder than we did. What are the odds? We had driven and stopped at six poolrooms and not a bit of action, and we pass some dudes on the interstate and they invite us to "get some."
Well, we followed them to what looked like an old convenience store. By this time, we'd drank a few and were set on "go." And they were too. Two bartables, and one 4X8 that leaned just a little toward the jukebox. Took a while to figure this one out. Scott and Bilbo decided to play some twenty a game eight ball, later switching it to six ball. Scott wins $620. They guy was getting tortured so bad that if he broke and made two, missed, he would just rake'em. So he quits and jumped all over what he thought was just the backer...me. $220 more and we were back in the car. We promptly checked into a hotel in Florence and finished off the Jack. Pretty good start to our ten days in Myrtle Beach.
Moral...always scream out and fu#4 with anyone with an "eightball" fuzzy dice hanging from the rearview mirror. You just never know.
