i want to just break my cue...and never play again...im an excellent pool player and this sux...it makes me feel like everything ive done is a waste of time........

i want to quit...but at the same time i know i can play at better and higher levels...

can you guys give me a a little help on how to maintain the drive....

some positive thoughts about pool.....

i hate it when i hate the game i love

The bad times make the good times feel even better.
Basically I think you should just keep working on your game and don't
let any particular loss upset you. Wins and losses happen.

Take care of the game and the game will take care of you.

I would not live and die with any one tournament, at my age I must have played in just guessing 500 or more. Most I don't even remember anything about them. So you lost, so what, take a reality check, none of it means much. I don't care for your comment calling people "Bums". They share the same common interest in pool as you do and if they win or lose deserve your respect. It is likely in the pool food chain using your logic you are a bum as well. If you went 2 and out to weak players, I doubt you were a favorite to win the tournament anyway and were one of the weaker players in the field as well.

Sounds to me like the OP thinks way to highly of his game as do MANY players. Alot of people think they play at one level but are no where near that level.
We all have days where we just can't do anything right , it happens.
I agree it time to get over it put your big boy pants on and move on.

Take a good look at why you lost and work on it. You probably got to cocky thinking you where supposed to smash these 2 so called "bums" and didn't give them or the table the proper respect.

Time to grow up or your game will never improve.

I've never been beat by, "bums." All my losses in tournaments, which greatly
exceed my cashing, have been to excellent players.

being excellent at shots and knowing how to win are completely different things,,,,,sometimes playing smart is alot better than having all the shots. Even so, I've never seen anyone who doesn't lose.

+1

I might be too easy on me and my game/ability. But I have a hard time understanding why people I play get upset, they think to much of themselves and their game. I actually enjoy the post shot routine, analyzing what went wrong and how to improve. I carry a notebook where I scribble down thoughts and errors in my game and go through them in thought and on table another day. I also remember and think of the qoute that "pool is a game played by ugly people", that puts me in a good mind set. ALSO I remind myself not even Tiger Woods or Efren plays their game perfect everytime, that thought is humbling and I can't possibly through a fit because I lose, even to players I'm supposed to beat. Pool has made me friends, pool let's me think nothing and everything when drenched in work that's good enough for me.

You got to feel it in your bones!

To play pool you got to feel it in your bones, if you do you'll get the Drive you seek, I think you do , because I've read many of your post.

The worst feeling I've ever had playing pool was a long time ago when I lost $20.00 at 50 cents agame, that's 40 games loser, the worse beating I've ever had, sure I've lost more money but have never had that down in the dumps feeling I had that day.....

but really it was the best thing that ever happen to me because I had some Drive to Win after that whoopin' and it turned me into a winner, cause I wanted to win at the game and did from then on out.

You just got to look at the game of pool as being easy, and the mind will let it be so, if your thinking ah man , what to do now , well the game looks real hard then and is, you go to missing balls,

Just think I'm going to play pool like God today and let it happen!

i'm not getting to play as often as i like but i certainly feel your pain. i was asked the other day what level i was playing. my answer, "on a good day a 7 and on a bad day a "2"! after getting home from a night of not being able to make a ball and getting beat by "3"s, my first thought is to just contact ebay and end the suffering, then i start to analyize how the heck that happened. so i spend half the night in bed wondering what caused my lapse. the next day i am returning to the pool hall and finding the problem. usually it is a problem with fundamentals. you just got to get back on the horse. of course, my big advantage is the simple love of the game. i used to play at a "9" level and even though i am an old guy now, i want to be able to shoot that way just one more game! hang in there and "get back on".

why you lost

Two tracks. First if you lost to two bums because you were outplayed when you were playing well within your normal range of play I agree with those that say look at your game.

However, if your game broke down physically or mentally, forget the details! Go with what David did and let the losses create a fire in your gut. You don't need to pick over every detail of losses you shouldn't have taken, just use them for inspiration.

When I take a loss due to a brain cramp on my part I don't even use it for inspiration. That was an abnormality, I forget about it and move on.

Oh yeah, about the bums thing, I assume you used it the same way I did, like referring to two pug boxers not losers in life or street bums.

Don't give up JC; this is the wake up call everyone of us has heard at one time or another! Obviously you have had a learning experience here. Don't fail yourself by not picking up a gold nugget of knowledge to help your game here!

Like others have eluded to treat all opponents like they are World Champion because you never know when they will surprise you! Never let yourself play to the opponents level because that is the opportunity they need.

Let your time at the table truly be, "Your time." The only thoughts in your mind should be your Preshot Routine and playing the layout before you. If its not you need to identify what bugging you. Ask yourself why the unresolved situation in your mind is there and truthfully answer yourself. Then reason out to yourself the best and worst outcomes that could arise. You need to keep that glass half full with confidence in gear when doing this. That way you bulldoze right through those mental roadblocks that appear before you.

Your game will improve if you play your way through this set back...like the Chinese proverb says: The bigger the fall the higher we bounce back up!

I can relate JC. In a nutshell it goes like this - You (and I) are not playing in enough tournaments to get tournament hardened. I know that and it sounds like you don't. It is one thing to play well in practice or scrimmaging with friends and another thing entirely to compete in a tournament. I KNOW because what you're talking about has happened to me many times. It's often been hard for me to play an occasional tournament against lesser players who are playing in them every week. I expect too much out of myself and often fall short of my expectations. I accept now that this is the case and do my best to overcome it. It's as much mental as physical when this happens. I have yet to figure out the answer other than to say you must play in more tournaments. Unfortunately for me this will not happen due to my other priorities. Good luck to you in the future, hope you catch your gear one time!

Take it for what it was: one tournament loss. Evaluate your game and why you lost, better yet, have someone help you evaluate it. Then move on. I've lost to players in tournaments who couldn't beat me if two dollars were on the line. Tournaments can be tough. I like what Jay said and he should know, if anybody should!
Stick with it, you'll get past it, if you want to!
