It just occured to me that with DM gone, how should we do it and what should we call the second annual Holiday Tournament that some of us played "together" last year?

Maybe the "Post Posterous DM Holiday Classic"

or the "Drivermaker Memorial"

or "We're Still Here and DM's Not, nyah nyah nyah Open"

Williebetmore, didn't you keep stats last time? When did we start/finish and any ideas for this year's play?

Chef-man,
Well, I guess it would definitely have to be the "D'maker Memorial Tournament." Last year we started in early December and finished Jan. 2nd. The tournament consisted of 10 sets of 10 racks of a variation on the Hopkins "Q Skill Challenge."

Yes, I did keep the records, which was a little bit of work. I tried to whip up some interest in it with only modest success. I think the daunting task of completing 100 racks during the holidays kept many from participating. In addition, there was a WIDE variation in type and toughness of equipment; making any true competition or comparison somewhat difficult. My instructor also believes that studying the strategy of this particular game can lead to marked improvement in scores well above any modest increase in ability that may result from competing - again making true comparison's difficult.

Despite all the drawbacks listed above; it was still very entertaining to complete the entire challenge, the trash-talking was also fun, and it is ALWAYS a good idea to do some self-assessment in this very demanding sport/game

If there is any significant interest, perhaps we should do it again. I would certainly be willing to start it if 15 or 20 people are seriously interested in competing. Perhaps 50 racks instead of 100 could increase participation.

Players with ideas please post here. Players with guts enough to participate please indicate your willingness to participate (realize that only a very good excuse will keep us from thinking that the non-participants are worthless pansies who couldn't run 3 freaking balls if they were all hanging).

I've not been able to play a lot here as of late, but I'm in if this does indeed happen.

I'd be happy to put my ego away and put my scores up for comparison.

Now, how is the handicap determined? :D

Can I get in on this ruckus?

I think it'd be a hoot to meet you all :)

Ronoh,
The "tournament" was a virtual event. Everyone just does the 50 racks (we did 100 last year) in the privacy of their own home or tavern; then posts the scores - we kept running scores last year just to see how people were coming along. We have a STRICT honor system (er... ?ronoh system?) - you are only fooling yourself if you fudge - the prizes aren't that great.

50 sounds good. I'm in. Maybe start right after Thanksgiving and go until Christmas or New Years?

As for your instructor's comment on improvement via strategy only, not pool skills, I disagree with that being a negative. Strategy skills are as important as physical shooting abilities and need to be honed, too, and they'll cross over to other games. Improvement comes many ways to many players, depending on where they are in their journeys in pool.

How about everyone who has some nads (women, too) and wants to improve (and maybe even wants to honor the "late" DM), put down your name here and let's play some pool.

Or, in DM lingo: What?...are you too much of a wuss?...hmmmmm?....wadda ya say...do you play pool or just flap your jaws about it? Show us what that Predator will do. :D

Willie: I never quite finished last year. think I did 90 some racks. The reason I didn't finish was that I was doing some other things at the time that my instructor told me to do and I was in a pretty good groove and didn't want to risk getting knocked out of it.

That being said,I'd give it another go if we only had to do 50 racks.

A note from beyond the forums ;)

"I wanted me to let you know that a "Memorial" tournament isn't necessary since I'm alive and well. I could come on at any time under another screen name but choose not to because I'm sick and tired of the Shorty's of the world, the Marissa's, and the Mike Howerton's.

That having been said, I wish all of you a Happy Holiday and good shooting."

Cool, us Canadians get a nice head start :D

I'm in, and agree that 50 would be a good number, that's about how far I got last year :(

For those who missed it, forgot about it, or just plain didn't care but do now, here is the original post (rules included) that initiated the original Drivermaker Invitational :

The ongoing results thread recording scores during the Invitational :

I feel partly responsible for him being banned. I know I didn't put the words in his mouth, but my prior actions led to his post that got him banned. I considered him a friend and he'll be missed.

EDIT: I would also like to participate in the "Drivermaker Classic"

I think that it should stay as the "Drivermaker Invitational" ... he just won't be able to accept an invitation this year :p and will have to be forever judged by the 1509 score he posted last year. It will be interesting to see if Shorty or Marissa can shoot a 754.5 in 50 racks, assuming they're not afraid to participate.

Hal, I don't believe you are responsible in any way for DMs fate. DM jumped on a situation as he often did. It was his choice to participate, he knew what he was doing.

Koop,
How could you promote such an obvious hoax??? Everyone knows that our friend passed away; he's deceased, expired, passed to the Great Beyond; an ex-Drivermaker. We're just trying to honor his memory. Pretty soon you'll be reporting your contacts with Elvis. Though, maybe it IS possible to have contact with the deceased like in that movie "Ghost" - man, that Demi Moore was definitely hot.

I didn't participate last year and also thought 100 racks would have been to many for me to get done in the time alotted. 50 racks sounds good. I'm in!
Will this be same rules and half points? May I propose that anybody getting a 754 in 50 play one extra rack and score some percentage of the rack to be agreed upon in order to claim a 755 thus beating the DM equivalent of 754.5?

Terry< just confused myself! :D

I'll have you know good sir that Elvis is alive and well in my basement.
I just don't let him out too often and he really likes his jelly donuts.

No way man. It definietly was NOT your fault. I think the message I posted from him clears up that issue.

Oh yeah, welcome back buddy.

I will definitely participate. I had a blast last year and would love to do it again, I would also be willing to help Williebetmore anyway I can in organizing it considering it is alot of work putting something like this together. I also like the sound of playing 50 racks instead of a 100, 100 was just too many for us to do without becoming homeless, divorced, etc :)

For those of you that didn't participate last year I would definitely suggest trying it, the game is a great and fun way to practice and really helps your game. Wasn't Jennifer B. supposed to post her scores last year? I don't think I remember her posting them, perhaps we could get some of the pros to participate this year that would be cool.

Sniper,
Yes, several of the pro's threatened to compete; but none posted scores. I definitely am thinking that 50 racks is the way to go.

I'll start posting the info on Thanksgiving weekend so everyone will have at least a month to complete 50 racks. I'll also start hassling...errr...encouraging the pro's to see if they will step up to the plate.

P.S. - we already knew you would participate; what the heck else is there to do in the dead of winter in the Great White North?????

I'd be in... Sounds like some fun. Let me know when and if it starts and I will get going.

Peace, Joe
