Drop pocket vs. gully... what is your preference and why?

drop pockets. dont have to bend over or kneel down to get balls. Dont have to stand there and wait for the ball to come out to get it. dont have to hear the clunks of the return system, or put your balls through that unnecessary abrasion. Balls cant get stuck. You dont have to deal with a random object ball coming out of the cue ball spot or vice versa. you dont have to put the extra balls elsewhere when playing 9 ball. you cant lose your chalk in a drop pocket. miles better for one pocket for a litany of reasons.

pulling balls out of drop pockets takes no more than maybe ten seconds and maybe as few as five? Personally id rather walk than bend or kneel.

Drop pockets for all of the reasons already given by others. I used to play sixty or eighty hours a week. Bending or kneeling to rack got old. Much rather gather from the pockets and with two people playing if the nonracker grabs two or three of the top pockets I think drop pockets are faster than gullies.

depends. I like the look of leather drop pockets and the sound it makes when balls go into them but I don’t see any point in having a diamond or a table with just plastic drop pockets That aren’t visible. I’ll take the gully. \

I like the gully, because i'm lazy and don't like pulling balls out of the pockets. But sadly my table at home has drop pockets

I too grew up playing gulley. I think it was 10 years before I saw my first drop pocket table.

At home I bought a GC4 used, that was drop pocket. I think for home use, drop pockets are better. If you end up doing a lot of drills, the balls are all in the drill pocket and easier to set back up.

IMO.

If too much walking is why one doesn't like drops they need to get in shape. ;) I don't mind returns for 9b/8b but they suck for playing one pocket.
It's funny, I hate drop pockets for one hole. The reason is most players keep the balls in the pockets, and the score is not easy to see. You have to look in the corner and side pockets (4 total), and often stick your hand in there to shift the balls around to count them. In contrast, on a ball return table, the player must put the balls on the rack above the return (on a GC). So the score can be seen at a glance.

Different story I suppose on a table that has no ball keeping devices.

Drop pocket.
The sound it makes when you swirl a ball around a plastic pocket.
Preferably a Gabriel drop pocket because they can fit a ton of balls. I wonder if they fit on gold crowns?

Both. Table with ball return, but with large car wash sponges in the pockets to make it a drop pocket table. My back can only take so much leaning over and gathering balls out of the return.

Do any of the pro tournaments, WNT or Predator/WPA, still use gulley tables?

I like gulleys for practice, but I like drops for games. Gonna half to think about it before I buy a Diamond table. Used to think I'd get a gulley. Now I am not sure.

Wish Diamond would come up with pocket insets that could dropped into a gulley table. That would be something.

Surprised you have enough room. Most gully tables i've played on the pockets are barely deep enough for 1 ball. The GCs at one of the houses I play the sides will barely take a ball with pace without spitting it back out.

Drop pockets. Ball return is loud at home and the older you get, the less you want to bend down and get balls from the return. And, if you play any one pocket, it helps prevent sleeping balls.

From what I've seen is matchroom when using diamonds still use gullies on most tables other than the stream/TV tables. Maybe you could get diamond to put the drop pockets in the Pro-Am like used on some of the matchroom tables or go with a professional which is drop pocket.

conversely there are also drop pocket tables with ball holders

Gully 100%. I have a 9’ GC IV and I can’t stand drop pockets .. clearing balls when pockets get full, the clicking ball on ball sound when you make a shot, walking around the table collecting balls every time you rack .. nope .. sucks! I can practice 3000 stroke drill into corner pocket without ever having to walk away from the ball box
Ditto! Especially playing straight pool. I like to think about strategy while my opponent racks, not shagging balls.
