Drum Roll, Please...BCA Announces HOF Nominees

They founded the APA, JAM. Larry Hubbart was as good as anyone in the late 70s. Terry Bell had a chance to beat anyone on a given day. The reason they are in consideration though is because the BCA and the APA are GOOD friends.

Oh, I get it! ;)

I knew about both men's pool-shooting capabilities from the side-armed player.

Since they are co-nominees in the Meritorious Category, then their contribution to the sport by founding the APA is what is noteworthy.

Sang Lee was definately a first tier player but more importantly, he did more to keep three cushion alive in this country than anyone else. He was lucky to win his world championship but I don't think he played anywhere near as many tournements as his European counterparts for some of the other years.

He won the national title numerous times but he also was the one responsible for running the tournement, paying out prize money,etc... Most of my three cushion videos were filmed at his pool hall in NY,also. Blomdahl is definately the best player for the last decade but Sang Lee was one of the top also and was the best at rail first shots (tickies,etc...) that Blomdahl had ever seen. He had a beautiful, unique game and it really sucks I only got to see him once.

Earl needs to go in too; what does it take to go in if 11 major championships and tons of regular tourney wins doesn't do it? Allen should also go in; he won a lot of tourneys in one pocket as well as being a great 9-ball and 14.1 player.

Robin seems like a great lady, but I think Ewa got put in last year over Earl and Allen and nobody in the WPBA has the accomplishments of any of these guys.

Or so the BCA will have you believe. Larry and Terry had a "Stoke" of genius and it has paid off extremely well for them.

Ronnie Allen deserves it more.

Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart were twon former touring Pros and roadplayers as well. Larry was the original "Iceman" and at one time was considered one of the top road dogs.

I believe they are being nominated for the Service award due to the company they founded-the American Poolplayers Assn; the APA.

Eric >punching out, have a great New Year's everyone.

*edit-after taking 80 hours to type my post, I noticed several responses bfore mine. Sorry!

To expound a bit, partly due to the founding of the APA, 2 million people are playing pool in leagues that otherwise might not have been involved in the sport.

but I really hate these "best ever" statements about any sports figure. The equipment changes over the years, the knowledge increases, etc. You just can't compare today's greats with yesterday's greats, it just isn't fair to either. JMHO

This is one of the most intelligent statements anyone has made. Thanks catscradle. I personally feel that pool should be like other sports that don't induct until a person has ended their professional career.

If Earl doesn't get in, the whole Hall of Fame is a big joke as far as I'm concerned. SIX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS and FIVE US OPENS !!!! That's ELEVEN MAJOR TITLES.

That's like a tennis player winning 6 Wimbeldon's and 5 US Opens or like a golfer winning 6 British Opens and 5 US Opens. It's a freakin' joke. In any other sport Earl would have been in on the very first ballet. Hell Tiger Woods has only won 8 majors and if he retired tommorow he'd get into golfs Hall of Fame.

Sure enough Earl is hated by many for his antics. But were Ty Cobb in baseball or John McInroe in tennis nice people....I think not. Is Barry Bonds going to be kept out of the Hall of Fame?....I think not.

Love him or hate him, Earl deserves in the Hall of Fame, RJ
I was a BCA member for many years. So before you get hot under the collar if Earl doesn't win. Think about what how it works. Earl has made the ballot before and not gotten in. You see all the associate and voting members get a vote or half vote. They don't get to decide who is on the ballot but the members vote on who they want. So the Hall Of Fame represents the feelings of the membership. A hall of fame should represent the feelings of the membership of the organization. Earl will get in. Will it be this year? Chances are good. But if not he will make it. Some will vote against Earl just because they don't like him. That is sad but it is true. So the old saying "nice guys always finish last" is not always true.

If he won eleven world titles, then he won more than Efren, but Efren was inducted last year, again against Earl. Will that mean that players respect Efren more than Earl? Or Efren shows them all how to play real pool? Whatever the reason was, it will be a big decision this year. But fans of Earl, as I said, he will be inducted!! So are Archer, Bustamante, Hopkins, Parica, Immonen, Souquet, Morris, Pagulayan, and some of your favorites.

I have seen sang lee and blomdahl play in person many times, both are hall of famers.sang lee is responsible for promoting billiards all over the U.S.A.and his tourny's in NY started the rise in popularity, without him promoting the game of billiards it wouldnt even be close to what it is.he has won many many tourny's in korea and asia and his world campionship not to mention his 11 in a row.currently there are weekly tourny's in ny and fla, becuase of him and promoting of the game.Sang Lee needs to be in the HOF

Well in the last 3 years Robin played full time by my estimations, after entry fees she made a total of $14K. After expenses ZERO!!

She obviously can do better devoting her time to the Frog Jump Cue.

Such a shame.

It's a sad reality, but it is a fact that it is very difficult to make ends meet as a professional pool player.

Mike Sigel and Allen Hopkins, both champion players with national/international titles, left the arena of professional play in the height of their careers. I have to think it isn't because they did not still play well, but that they desired to a different lifestyle, wanted to make a significant income utilizing their pool expertise, and realized the income potential in competitive pool is not that great.

BTW, I heard it from MANY sources that this Frog jump cue of Robin's is the best bang for the buck when it comes to jump cues.

Probably because they co-founded the APA.

Since I am not from the USA, I only know Earl from among the nominees. But what are the criteria for choosing nominees? Is it winning too many tours or inspiring young players and a good ambassador of the game? I think Parica should be included. Just my opinion.

The HOF player is picked by mostly people that make billiard products but generally do not play pool on any regular basis, allot of them pick according who will sell more of their products and that group sticks together. BCA (Beware Corporate Agenda), sometimes they get it right, Rempe was one of em recently, Reyes, another but they wern't able to get Reyes to attend due to a prior committment, I was going to go to Vegas just to see him get the award, instead someone else was there to represent him, guess the BCA board wasn't that concerned that he could be there, wonder if someone who gets an academy award for best actor/actress will not be there because they are making another movie. What happened to the old BCA of years gone by??????????????

They are both Co-founders of the American Pool Players Association (APA). I believe that is why they got the dual nomination.

And he is eligible 5 years after retirement. Let us know when Earl retires.

The last three years, as in 2002-2004? I haven't noticed her name in any WPBA events for quite a few years, so I'm curious as to which tour she is playing full time?

Use of the term "the last 3 years she played full-time" doesn't mean Robin played the tour full time during the last three years. It refers to Robin's last three years on tour, which would be 2000, 2001, and 2002.

I agree with you that players (in any sport) shouldn't be considered for the Hall of Fame until they've retired. Pool has crossed that line, however, by letting Efren Reyes and Ewa Laurance in early, so your comparison isn't a good one.If Efren deserves to get in early, so does Earl,JMO. RJ
