Dual stage tournaments are superior to true double elimination

I actually entered my first dual stage event last weekend. A "predator tour" event that was advertised as a switch to single elim and redraw at last 16. Of course, as is the norm in my neck of the woods. The TD did not adhere to their own advertised design and the tourney was altered to true double throughout. Disappointing of course, but again, I would have been surprised if the standard GTA "bait and switch" wasn't used.

In the end, it didn't matter to me as I bowed out the round prior to the last 16. Saving grace really... Would have needed to win two more money rounds on the second day just break even on my investment.

Tend to agree but at Derby the food sit. is horrible. The shit sucks and is waaaaaaaaay over-priced. New Albany(Fedor's new home btw) is just a few min. away with some decent and fair priced grub.
I hear you on the Derby venue but the post I replied to read as if it were a local room where the event (or proposed event) was held.

If the event makes money from viewers to the extent that the prize fund is mostly added money, single elimination from the start makes sense. That's what the Matchroom invitational events are. Every match is worth televising/streaming and I believe the players' expenses are taken care of.

If the event is an open event, like the Matchroom 256-player events, I think a good goal is to give every player at least two matches. I think that's enough guaranteed play. You can achieve that with groups of four players playing double elimination and taking the winner and the loser's side winner. That's five matches in three rounds. Or you could do a round robin with four players which is six matches in three rounds and everyone gets three matches guaranteed.

After everyone has their minimum number of matches, go to knockout.

Im not sure I agree but I will say is I much prefer that then waiting until the finals and making it one longer race. That always favors the guy coming from the 1 loss bracket is warmed up and in stroke while the guy who hasnt lost yet has been sitting for maybe a couple hours. you won’t anyone coming from the losers bracket that wouldn’t prefer only playing 1 set over 2.

IMO real 'pros' should play single-elim. from the get-go. Should be just like tennis, you lose you go home.
That sounds good but pool pros don’t make that much money to travel a long way for single elimination. the expos pro tournament was shit this year and in my opinion that was a big reason. they changed it to single elimination and with the shitty payout no one was traveling for that.

In my eyes a true 'PRO' event would be all tour-level pros. I could not care less about watching dead-money players on vacation getting wailed on. That's one thing i don't like about the USOpen. It is now an elite world-class event but you still have a bunch of people playing just to say they did.
You can not like it but you need that dead money. It’s like any local tournament. You can look at the room snd see there is a bunch of players playing that have no chance but you need their entry fee for the payout. pool is in no place to turn down dead money Yet. Maybe some day.

These tournaments get tougher as you get older especially if the tournament is not run smoothly.
Waiting is a killer.
Yep, but, when do I play again?
Whadayado, when the TD isn't able to give your ANY idea when your next???

It never was this way in tournament play, it happens Often.
Since the sixties to the 90's here's what Works!!

Play two winners rounds first, then flop to the losers side.
Players can look at the board, they have an idea just from their position.
I know when I lose my first match, if its a large event, I've got an easy 2-3 hrs before my next match.
This will also help the TD's attitude, if he/she gets cranking/late night.
EVERY player won't be asking em the same question.
Waiting...............
Player.
They just wanna go back to the room/car and take a nap/rest/plan/prepare for the next match, which is WHEN???
