Dumb questions 101

By way of introduction, since this is my first post, My name is Paul. I'm retired, in my 60's. My wife Cindy & I are just bangers, recreational players. So, anybody looking for a fish can quit reading here...we won't play for money.

We used to enter local tavern tournaments when we were dating over 30 years ago, but with raising a daughter, running a small biz, etc., our sticks ended up in the closet. A few years ago, we dicided to drag our old cues out and go shooting again. Lemme tell ya, 30 years away from the game is the same as never having played it.

I did learn one thing rather quickly. That is, that the old Palmer I bought back in the early 70's, a model M from the 2nd catalog, has suddenly become a collector's item. It went back in the closet, and I bought a pair of plain jane jacoby J-2's for us to play with.

So, here we are, after a few years of casual play. This leads to my dumb question. There are so many cue brands out there today, I'm confused. Who's good, who's not? I'm thinking of a bit fancier cue, since I'm not a guy fond of male jewelry, tattooing, or piercing. I've been looking at nice sticks on Pool Dawg's and other sites. So, anybody here have experience with Schon? Jacoby? Predator? Joss? Pechaeur?

How do the hits of these various cues compare?

Shoot a note to Tate. He is our resident expert on Palmers and could very likely tell you it's worth.

EDIT: Missed you question, sorry.

Of those it would be a toss up between Joss and Schon. I have played with both and they are both EXCELLENT cues. Schon's buttends are thinner than Joss and tend to be a little more back weighted. I prefer Joss but if it were me, I would try to hit with both and make a decision. Either way you can't go wrong.

Of the list you put up, you wont go wrong with any of them. I would personally recommend Schon. Their maple plain janes can be had for around 400-450 and is all the cue you will ever need. They play great (they are on the top of alot of folks lists), and tend to hold a good percentage of their value if you choose to sell them.

I like Joss cue's, and I like schon's. I think they both hit about the same imho. The newer schon's are better than the newer joss cue's again imho. Nothing at all wrong with a jacoby. If I was buying one of the three I'd get a old joss, but in a new cue I'd buy a schon.

I'd check with www.erikleecues.com who posts here. Usually has about the best prices.
 
i have had a joss and now own a schon.. imo the schon has a more organic nicer hit to it.. a bit stiffer and if i have to compare the joss.. id say it feels a bit cheaper than a schon.. just my opinion.. schons are great cues and i highly reccomend them.

I have two Schons and I love the way they both play. The hardest decision I have to make is which one to play with!!:D
 
I'm in a similar situation to yours, I hadn't played much since I was a kid until I retired. After I retired I started playing at a local rec center and I was terrible, had trouble running 3 balls. I'm still not as good as I'd like to be, but I'm a lot better than I was. Two things helped me improve. I tore out a wall in my basement and bought a 9' table, and after trying a few cues I finally settled on a Schon.

Having said that, I've seen every cue you mentioned in the hands of good local players. So while I would recommend a Schon, I would not tell you that your game will improve from the Jacoby you are currently using because they are also quality cues. The good thing about Schons is that they hold their value pretty good, so you can probably get your money back if you decide to move on to something else.
 
I currently play with a Joss with a 314 shaft. I got it from www.erikleecues.com at a great price. Definately check his prices before you buy from anyone else online.

Those other cues are all pretty good too, but will never be collector items. Maybe you're ready for a custom.

Many thanks to all for the responses...Yes Chris, I did send you pics of my old model M. I've been to your website. It taught me much about the Palmer line. Hell, I can't sell it...it has my name on it! ;) Not to mention the memories it has attached, the times spent with my future bride. Have to confess, yesterday was my birthday, so I was kind of thinking of buying myself a new cue as a present. Still thinking. Chris suggested I look at customs? Any comments on those? It sure seems that Scon has the edge here. Again, many thanks. This is a nice site, so, curse your luck...I'll be back.
 
Custom's are great. Steve Klein www.kleincues.com makes a bang up cue.

Our own resident Varney of Varney Cues makes a fantastic one as well.
Bob Frey sneaky petes are fantastic. I'd suggest you talk with Joe Lolley from bamacues as he has a large selection or take a look at the wanted/for sale section.
