Ok
What's the best type Durometer for testing tip hardness?
I bought a digital off eBay and all my tips......all of them read the same :(
I just want to be able to fit tips to customers.
Thanks for sharing.

Was it from China?

I bought a cheap moisture meter from China. It did seem to work somewhat but man did it blow thru batteries fast. Not worth it.

Anyway, I did notice that the actual Durometer is reasonable but it was the stands that that cost the big bucks.

I think it would be interesting to have one. That way you could really match
tips to your customers liking.

It seems that there can be lots of variances between all the hardness ratings.

I bet it is an import model.
It's handheld, no stand.
Maybe that's why it's sucky.
I really want to get one for a couple tricky customers.
One of them can't tell the 5 ball from an orange :)

I use a PTC Model 409 type D analog with the peak reading. tips vary from low sixties to 98. If you do not have a stand make sure you take your reading at the center if it is domed. Most of the softer tips and mediums usually end up mid seventies after used for a while.

Your right.
It doesn't :(

I haven't made that mistake, but then again, I haven't purchased a hardness tester either.
It's much easier to wait for everybody else to buy the wrong one, and then act like I know something...
After looking into tip testing for a few days, I decided that I didn't really care.

You can fudge the test but you can't do the test to ASTM standards. Your readings have to be taken 12MM from the edge which cannot be done on a 13-15MM tip.

Tom
I just want to compare "like" samples
Eg
X-brand soft compared to z-brand soft, and what le pro would fit.
The actual reading doesn't mean much unless I have a comparative sampling
At least that's my reasoning :)
One main goal is to find an ultra skin to fit each customer that is using something else now, whether that is an elk, triangle, Everest moori or kamui.
Having the tester is just one more reason to come into my shop vs another's.
Meh, looks like I'll be trolling for a shore d.
Even though I asked the eBay seller to ship me a d.
